Laura Bartow
recently completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Michigan, where she studied cello performance under professors Erling Blondal Bengtsson and Anthony Elliott. In the the fall she will be beginning her Masters of Music, studying with Shauna Rolston at the University of Toronto. Laura cares for chocolate ice cream a great deal.


Emily Benner
is pleased to be making her second appearance with Brave New Works. Her first performance was as the soprano soloist in Stravinsky's Pulcinella. Most recently, Emily has been singing as a resident artist with the Toledo Opera performing excerpts of roles such as Pamina (Magic Flute), Floria Tosca (Tosca) and Countess Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro). Other professional credits include the roles of First Lady (The Magic Flute) and Javotte (Manon) with the Michigan Opera Theatre, a number of appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and concert engagements in Ann Arbor and Charlevoix. While a student at the University of Michigan, Emily sang the roles of Sur Constance in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites and Nella in Puccinips Gianni Schicchi, and appeared as a soloist with University ensembles for performances of Mozartps Requiem and Handelps Israel in Egypt. In November 1999, Emily was selected as a Great Lakes Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.


Eileen Brownell
is a first year Master's Student at the University of Michigan. She graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Music Performance in June of 1999. While at the University of Denver, Eileens' activities centered around chamber music. Her quartet played on master classes for Joseph Silverstein, the Vermeer Quartet, and the Prazack Quartet in addition to their weekly coachings with the resident Davinci Quartet. Eileen's quartet was the winner of the annual chamber music competition for three consecutive years. Eileen also placed in the 1999 honor solo competition, and was awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate in Academic Achievement.


Christine Chu
originally from Berkeley, CA, is currently a student at the University of Michigan studying with Professor Erling Blondal Bengtsson. She will graduate in August with a B.M. in Cello Performance and a B.A. in American Cultures. In the fall, she will attend the Manhattan School of Music as a graduate student and study with David Geber.


Barney Culver
To be completely honest, I'm not really sure what to put on my bio. I'm 21, played the cello for 18 years, student of Anthony Elliott, Junior cello performance major interested in lots of music. I live with leo and Avi and my dog's name is Charlie.


Leo Eguchi
Cellist, is originally from Okemos Mi. Leo is currently completing his undergraduate degree with Anthony Elliott, former teachers include Eva Ell, Louis Potter Jr, and Tanya Carey. In addition to his cello studies leo is also completing a degree in physics. leo has been hailed by many as "the most sought after chamber musician in the world named leo eguchi". leo Has spent the last few summers at the Meadowmount school of music where he is teaching assistant to Tanya Carey. Katri Ervamaa
is a doctoral student in performance at the U-M School of Music. She has performed widely in the US, Europe and her native Finland. As a member of the Owla String Quartet, Katri has appeared in Bowdoin, Soundfest, Orlando, Haute Limousine. Norrtalje and Kuhmo Festivals and in recitals in Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Sweden and France. She is also a memeber of the Rosseels SQ, the graduate Quartet at U of M and the Brave New Works ensemble collective. Katri holds B.M and M.M degrees from the Northern Illinois University. Her teachers include Erling Blondal Bengtsson, Marc Johnson, Kazimierz Michalik and Lauri Laitinen as well as the Vermeer, Borodin and Colorado Quartets.

 

 

 


Thomas Gregory
completed his Bachelors in his home town of London, at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He then moved to Michigan to study for his Masters in Cello performance, with the Danish Cellist Erling Blondal Bengtsson. As a cellist, Thomas has Performed in many different ensembles, and has appeared as soloist in both Britain and the US. In 1998, Thomas won the Univerisity of Michigan Concerto competition with his performance of the Walton Concerto. Thomas currently resides in New York, but is planning to return to Europe in the summer.

 

 


Josh Kowalsky
is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Cello Performance at the University of Michigan under Professor Anthony Elliott. He holds the principal cello position at the University Symphony Orchestra, and previously the principal positions of the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria, and the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra. Josh recently performed alongside the UM faculty on the Michigan Chamber Players Series. In addition to being the teaching assistant for Richard Aaron at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Josh was also a faculty member of the Cleveland Music School Settlement in 1999. Currently, Josh is on the faculty at the Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts.

 

 

 


Colin Meek
is is a canadian cellist, currently studying under Erling Blondal Bengtsson at the University of Michigan. He has performed with the Michigan Chamber Players, and given chamber music performances at the Ann Arbor Chamber, Tanglewood, Banff, Encore and Meadowmount summer festivals. He is beginning studies in the Doctoral program of the Computer Science Engineering department at the University of Michigan next fall.

 

 

 


Erika Pierson
began studying the cello at age 7 in her hometown Seattle, WA. After many years of study under Richard Aaron and receiving the Eva Heinitz Outstanding Cellist Award in Seattle in 1992, she proceeded to Indiana University to study with Tsyoshi Tsutsumi. Upon completion of her Bachelor's degree of Music Performance from Indiana, Erika spent three years overseas. In Berlin, Germany, she studied for one and a half years at the Hochschule der Kunste under the instruction of Markus Nyikos. Following her time in Germany, she studied privately with Eileen Croxford in London, and gave many solo recitals at various venues around the area including St. Martin of the Fields. Erika has participated in master classes under Stanislav Apolin, Ralph Kirshbaum, Janos Starker, Lynn Harrell and Stephen Kates. She is now working towards her Master's degree with Erling Blondal Bengtsson at the University of Michigan.

 


Garth Edwin Sunderland
is an Interdisciplinary Artist whose work encompasses the fields of music, dance, theatre and film. He is a founder and the artistic director of Raze/Havok, a producing organization devoted to exploring the extreme frontiers of performance. His work has been performed nationwide, and has received numerous awards, among them the Hans Salter Prize in composition and multiple Potter Awards for his production of Brad Fraser's Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love. In 1998 he joined the faculty of The Walden School, an innovative summer institute for young composers. He has held residencies at the International Center for American Music and the Atlantic Center For The Arts, and holds degrees in composition from the University of Southern California and the University of Michigan. Mr. Sunderland lives in New York City, where he is currently developing a new production company, studying Hawkins and Cunningham modern dance technique, and working for the estate of Leonard Bernstein.

Andrea Yun
is a doctoral violoncello student at the University of Michigan, where she studies with Professor Erling Bengtsson. After completing her bachelor's (music education and mathematics) and master's (performance) degrees at Indiana University, she has returned to her birthtown of Ann Arbor to complete her studies. In recent years, Andrea has spent most of her time teaching pre-college cellists, working and teaching closely with string pedagogues such as Mimi Zweig, Richard Aaron and Paul Kadz. Andrea is a member of the Feliano Trio, which was formed in 1997 solely to commission and perform new works. She is a strong proponent of the contemporary music of students and non-students alike, and hopes to perform more new works this semester.
