Five dances

 Friday, February 12, 1999

Ensemble collective will participate in a University Musical Society sponsored masterclass/workshop with John Cage Specialist Laura Kuhn. In conjunction with the Merce Cunningham Dance company's visit to Ann Arbor, Brave New Works has commissioned five Ann Arbor composers to collaborate with five Ann Arbor Choreographers to create 5 Dances. These are of course inspired by the collaboration between John Cage and Merce Cunningham in their 16 dances.

Pease Auditorium in the Dance Building of University of Michigan at Ann Arbor

8 pm Thursday, February 18, 1999
8 pm Friday, February 19, 1999
8:30 pm Saturday, February, 1999

The first half of the concert will feature George Crumb's Madrigals Books I-IV

Madrigals were coached by the composer during his residency in Ann Arbor. Brave New Works hosted George Crumb jointly with the University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble on February 5th and 6th in the Rackham Auditorium

Performers for the Madrigals are

Jennifer Goltz, voice
Susan Bozell, flute
Amy Ley, harp
Eli Shapiro, percussion
Anthony Stoops, bass

The creation of Five dances are a true collaboration between the composer, choreographer and the instrumentalists as equal partners. The compositions employ improvisatory and aleatoric interaction between the performers and the dancers. The composers participated through the rehearsal process to interact with both dancers and instrumentalists
