Understanding the Posix Open System Reference Model
Produced: August 20, 1990

This video introduces the IEEE POSIX 1003.0 (ISO/IEC TR 14252) Open System Reference Model. This is a model designed to help identify issues in Application Portability and System Interoperability. I participated in IEEE POSIX from 1989-1996 and was the primary author of the Introduction and Network chapters of IEEE P1003.0. This video is based on the material I wrote for the Introduction chapter.

The animation was developed by Tory Sawyer and rendered on an SGI Challenge workstation - it took 12 hours to render the animation and another six hours to get it into tape one frame at a time.

To read more about IEEE P1003.0 - I wrote an article in IEEE Computer in January 1999 about the Open System Reference Model. I was the Standards Editor for IEEE Computer Magazine from 1995-1999 and wrote a number of columns.
