Cognitive Genetics Program (UMICH-COGENT)

Memory training programs are becoming increasingly popular for older adults.  Some of these programs are based on scientific research, others are mostly money-makers for the people who sell them.

There are two major problems with most memory training programs:  First, they often only show benefits for the task that is trained in the lab, not for real-world memory performance.  Second, people of more advanced age or lower education often show smaller benefits from training than do somewhat younger or more highly-educated seniors.

We are doing research to address these problems.  Our work suggests that those older adults who do well on memory training programs are those who pay greater attention to certain portions of the task.  We are now trying to see if we can train other older adults to use this successful strategy.  We are also examining different ways of getting the benefits of training to extend out into the real world.  This research is still in its early stages, but has the potential to improve training programs in some very important ways.
