Finallly, we are beginning to explore how aging affects emotional processing. The aging brain degrades in many areas, but we are most interested in the corpus callosum, which is responsible for transmitting information between the hemispheres of the brain.

Why is this important? Our research suggests that older adults perform significantly worse than young adults at emotion recognition tasks. Since only the right hemisphere of the brain specializes in emotional processing, and the corpus callosum of oder adults does not transfer information between the hemispheres as efficiently as young adults - we wonder, could this account for differences in how young and old adults interpret emotional information?
