the hempl project

Jen and I met as undergrads. I was working on a research project for professor richard w bailey and, I suspect, not making the kind of progress he'd hoped for.

He fished the smart girl out of a class I was taking and assigned her to help speed me along. instead, we two nerds fell madly in nerdly love and all progress on the hempl project promptly stopped.

you might do better to see what she has to say for herself.

Kevin: (very nervous, voice shaking, produces ring from pocket) Will you marry me?
Jen: (no beats skipped, giant grin) Of course, silly!

26th september 1998, about 2:30pm

jen and I were married on september 26th 1998 and have remained thus pretty much every day since. I've always been a nerd and I used to be pretty damn fat -- I honestly have no idea what Jen was thinking.

Jen tells it better than I do:
We got to the Birth Center Triage window at 8:15am. A small cluster of nurses exploded after one look at me, a wheelchair appeared from nowhere, and we flew to the examining room. Kevin held me up for one last "don't push, don't push, don't push" contraction and a cursory examination drew "oh, honey, you're complete!" and "page doctor smith!" and the wheels on the examining table came unlocked. We sprinted into room 9 (the closest to triage; exactly that scene from the movies that never actually happens in real life) at 8:23am (the nurses telling me "if you feel like pushing, honey, you go right ahead!") and 18 minutes and 6 pushes later, Nora came into the world.

She's a great kid. We're really lucky, but nora has an entire web site all to herself where you can read more. :)
