BUSINESS OF THE CHAPTER The Midwest Chapter held its fall 1999 meeting at the Congress-Plaza Hotel in Chicago. Our thanks go to Chapter President A. Peter Brown for overcoming various organizational hurdles, and to Camilla Cai and the Program Committee for selecting a distinguished group of presentations. Minutes of Business Meeting. The business meeting of the Chapter consisted (as our president promised) mainly of announcements. It was called to order at 4:20 P.M. on Saturday, 25 September. President Brown explained the change of venue from DePaul University, which had stipulated an exorbitant deposit for insurance. (Our parent organization, it was observed, does not hold insurance for its annual meetings.) Nonetheless, the Congress-Plaza has become more expensive, especially now that we are required to use the hotel's audiovisual equipment. Room rental is now $500/day, or $1,000 for one meeting. It may be time to seek some other venue, in or near Chicago, for the next fall meeting. In the ensuing discussion, Oak Park was suggested as a possibility. President Brown noted the change in date of the next spring meeting: 8-9 April 2000. He encouraged members to submit papers. As promised at the 1999 spring meeting in Kent, he named a committee on program policy-Pamela Fox, Camilla Cai, and James L. Zychowicz-and requested the committee to submit a report at the 2000 spring meeting. Treasurer Mary Natvig reported that the Chapter had spent $1,572 and had received just over $700 income from dues plus over $300 in dues collected at the Chicago meeting, leaving the balance at just over $3,000. President Brown suggested that the next mailing include a bill for dues (including dues in arrears). Said bill should also leave space for updates of mailing and e-mail addresses. The meeting was adjourned at 5:00. Nominations for Chapter Office. The Nominations Committee of the Midwest Chapter (Shirley Bean, Stephen Self, and James Briscoe) invites nominations for the offices of President and AMS Council Representative from Chapter members. Please address nominations as soon as possible to James Briscoe, committee chairperson, at jbriscoe@butler.edu.

SPRING MEETING IN ANN ARBOR The Midwest Chapter will hold its next spring meeting at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) on 8-9 April 2000. Thanks are extended to the Local Arrangements Committee-Mark Clague (Executive Editor, Music of the United States of America) and Naomi AndrŽ (Asst. Prof. of Musicology)-for their hard labor, which has borne fruit (among other ways) in a stunning website for the meeting: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~claguem/amsmidwestmeeting/ Those who have visited the website already have full information about everything from travel and accommodations to musical attractions, maps, and typical weather ("unpredictable"). While full details will be included with the program in the March mailing, certain "date-sensitive" information appears on the next page. Also, please plan to attend the no-host hora felix and Chapter dinner on the evening of 8 April at the Zanzi-Bar, one-half block from that day's meeting site. We anticipate that dinner will cost ca. $25/person but will have the exact price worked out for the March mailing.

CALL FOR PAPERS. Chapter members are invited to submit papers on any subject to the Program Committee. As in past years, the committee will favor submissions from members who have not read papers at Midwest Chapter meetings in the preceding year. In 500 words or less, abstracts should explain the originality, methodology, and conclusions of the paper. They should also include a list of audio-visual equipment needed and an estimate of the time required to deliver the paper. Papers of 20-25 minutes are the norm. Abstracts without identification of authorship must be sent to each member of the Program Committee and must be RECEIVED by MONDAY, 14 FEBRUARY 2000. Prof. Camilla Cai, Chair Music Department Kenyon College Gambier, OH 43022 Prof. Lawence E. Bennett 601 E. Wabash Avenue Crawfordsville, IN 47933 Prof. James Parsons 4355 So. National Ave. Apt. 1209 Springfield, MO 65810 One signed abstract should be sent to the President of the Chapter at the address given below. Students wishing to compete for the annual prizes offered by Indiana University Press and A-R Editions, should so indicate in the letter covering the signed abstract. In order to be considered, students must submit three copies of the complete paper to the program committee no later than the meeting at which they read the paper. Winners of the awards will be announced after the spring 2000 meeting.

Discounted Room Rates. Discounted rooms are being held at three Ann Arbor hotels. Each has imposed its own cut off date, as given below. Please make note of the cancellation policy for the hotel where you make your reservation, so that you do not pay unnecessary charges in the case your plans change. The hotels are as follows: CAMPUS INN. One of the nicer hotels in Ann Arbor, hence a bit more expensive, but perfectly situated on central campus. Room rates, with our conference discount, are $106 for single occupancy and $121 for double. Call (734) 769-2200 to make reservations before 7 February 2000. Parking is available. HAMPTON INN. Close to the School of Music and convenient for anyone driving to the conference via US 23. With the conference discount, rooms cost $62 per night, which includes a continental breakfast. Call (734) 996-4444 to make reservations and tell the reservations desk attendant that you're attending the AMS Midwest Conference. Ample free parking is available, and the hotel has a swimming pool. RED ROOF INN. Just across the parking lot from the Hampton Inn and likewise very easy to find from US 23. Rooms are available for AMS Midwest attendees at a discounted rate of $55.99 for single occupancy and $65.99 for 2 guests or more. Call (800) 843-7663 for reservations. The organization of graduate students in musicology at the University of Michigan has kindly agreed to arrange "crash space" in student apartments or roommate pairings to split cost in local hotels for graduate students visiting Ann Arbor from other AMS Midwest institutions. Michigan students also invite their colleagues to join them for lunch on Saturday, 8 April, at a local restaurant to be announced. For details, please contact Julia Byl at jbyl@umich.edu.

CONGRATULATIONS May the whole Chapter join in congratulating our distinguished colleague Hans Tischler on the occasion of his 85th birthday, 18 January 2000. A celebratory event is planned this coming February by the Department of Musicology at Indiana University. Details will be posted on the Chapter website as they become available (or contact A. Peter Brown).

NEWS AND DUES Please check the number to the right of your name on the mailing label. It indicates the year through which your Chapter dues have been paid. If you have fallen into arrears, please take this as an invitation to re-activate your membership. As of April 1999, annual dues are $10 ($5 for student members). But we will happily accept back dues at the previous rate of $5 ($3 for students). Treasurer Mary Natvig will welcome your check payable to "AMS Midwest Chapter." She will also welcome prompt notification of changes of address. If you have moved out of the Chapter's geographic area, please let the Treasurer know whether or not you would like to retain your membership in the Chapter (of course we invite you to retain your membership). After every mailing, the Secretary receives a sizable stack of undelivered and/or undeliverable missives, which cost the Chapter dearly. Please keep us posted, because no one else will; and the Postal Service does not forward bulk mail. Steven M. Whiting, Director Center for European Studies Associate Professor of Musicology.
