FALL MEETING IN CHICAGO
Mark your calendars for the fall meeting of our Chapter in Chicago 28-29 September.
We will be returning to the hospitality of National-Louis University at 122
South Michigan Avenue (room 5006) courtesy of Elinor Olin. National Louis is
centrally located in the Loop of downtown Chicago near the Art Institute and
Symphony Center.
CALL FOR PAPERS: FALL 2002 MEETING IN CHICAGO
PROPOSALS
Chapter members are invited to submit abstracts of papers on any subject to
the Program Committee (see instructions below).
Proposals for sessions or presentations in innovative formats are welcome. The
committee will favor submissions from members who have not presented at Midwest
Chapter meetings during the preceding year. Abstracts should be 500 words or
less for those holding the Ph.D. Students should submit an abstract of at least
1000 words. Abstracts should explain the originality, methodology, and conclusions
of the paper. Only a single proposal for a panel is necessary, but it should
indicate the overall concept and the areas which each panelist will discuss.
Abstracts should also indicate any audio-visual equipment needed and the time
required to deliver the paper (papers of 20-25 minutes are the norm). DEADLINE
FOR PROPOSALS: Friday, 12 July 2002, by 11:59 p.m. E.S.T.

You should compose your abstract and proof it in a word processing program and
then copy and paste it into the text box on the form. Fill in the form completely
and click the submit button. Your proposal will be processed automatically.
You should receive a confirmation email within three days. If you do not receive
a confirmation, please contact the web manager
or resubmit your proposal.
By U.S. Mail
Please send one blind abstract (i.e., one without identification of authorship)
to each of the three members of the Program Committee and one signed abstract
(one with the author identified) to the President of the Chapter. Addresses
will be provided in a future announcement and in the next chapter mailing.
By Fax
Please fax one blind abstract (i.e., one without identification of authorship)
to each of the three members of the Program Committee and one signed abstract
(one with the author identified) to the President of the Chapter. Be certain
that your fax is clearly marked to the attention of the appropriate AMS Midwest
officer or program committee member. Fax numbers will be provided in a future
announcement and in the next chapter mailing.

STUDENT PAPER AWARDS
Students wishing to compete for the annual prizes offered by Indiana University
Press and A-R Editions should so indicate in a letter covering the signed abstract.
In order to be considered, students must submit three copies of the complete
paper to the program committee no later than the meeting at which they read
the paper. Winners of the awards will be announced after the spring 2003 meeting.

Hotels near meeting site include: Congress Plaza Hotel, 520 South Michigan Ave.,

1 West Washington (866/690-1986, $199/night, single or double) Hostel International
Chicago, 24 E. Congress (312/360-0300) $31.75/person/night Cass Hotel, 640 North
Wabash Ave. (1-800/227-7850) is a more economical alternative. Motel 6 at 162
East Ontario St. (312/787-3580) is an alternative for those willing to take
a five-minute taxi ride. Further details about the fall meeting will be included
in the next mailing.
EVENTS
What else is going on in Chicago during the weekend of the meeting?
Art Institute exhibits in late September include "Fukusa and Furoshiki: A Gift of Splendid Japanese Gift Covers and Wrapping Cloths" and a retrospective of works by Spanish sculptor Juan Mu–oz (http://www.artic.edu/aic/exhibitions/vangogh.htm or 312/443-3600.
Chicago Symphony (http://www.chicagosymphony.org or 1-800-223-7114) presents an all Ravel program on Saturday, September 28th. Daniel Barenboim, conductor and piano. Works include Mother Goose Suite and Piano Concerto in G Major. Jazz pianist Oscar Peterson is performing in Symphony Hall on Friday, September 27th. Ticket information available through the Chicago Symphony website and ticket office.
Lyric Opera presents a new production of the double bill "Cav & Pag," Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana along with Ruggero Leoncavallo's I Pagaliacci on Saturday evening. CHANGES IN CHAPTER OFFICERS
As the Call for Papers indicates, the incoming president of the AMS Midwest
Chapter is James Briscoe of Butler University. The Chapter welcomes him to his
new duties and thanks him in advance for his service. The Midwest Chapter thanks
outgoing President Camilla Cai for her leadership and work over the past two
years. Thanks go to members of last year's Program Committee of Elinor Olin
(chair), Roberta Lindsey, and Inna Naroditskaya. The Nomination Committee last
year included Jeff Wasson (chair), Mary Natvig, and Brian Hart. Finally (assuming
I'm not forgetting anyone), thanks to Roberta Lindsey for hosting the Spring
Meeting at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in April. Thanks
to everyone who served the Chapter for their hard work, dedication, and time!
