FIRST MAILING, 2000-2001 JUNE 2000
CALL FOR PAPERS: FALL 2000 MEETING IN CHICAGO
Mark your calendars for 23-24 September. As in years past, the fall meeting
of our Chapter will take place in Chicago, but this time in a new venue for
us: the National-Louis University at 122 South Michigan Avenue (room 5006).
The location is wonderful; the Loop campus of National Louis is across the street
from the Art Institute and one block north of the new Symphony Center. Our thanks
to Elinor Olin for handling the local arrangements in Chicago.
Papers, please!
Chapter members are invited to submit abstracts of papers on any subject to
the Program Committee (see below). The committee will favor submissions from
members who have not read at Midwest Chapter meetings during the preceding year.
In 500 words or less, abstracts should explain the originality, methodology,
and conclusions of the paper. They should also indicate any audio-visual equipment
needed and the time required to deliver the paper (papers of 20-25 minutes are
the norm). Please send one blind abstract (i.e., without identification of authorship)
to each member of the Program Committee. One signed abstract should be sent
to the President of the Chapter. The deadline is unusually late-25 July-because
several of the Program Committee will be abroad most of the summer. Let no one
plead want of time to submit an abstract of their most brilliant recent work!
Students wishing to compete for the annual prizes offered by Indiana University
Press and A-R Editions, should so indicate in the letter covering the signed
abstract. In order to be considered, students must submit three copies of the
complete paper to the program committee no later than the meeting at which they
read the paper. Winners of the awards will be announced after the spring 2001
meeting.
Accommodations.
Apparently we have stiff competition for rooms from another, much larger convention
in the Loop, so please act quickly. Within walking distance of the meeting,
rooms may still be available at the Congress Plaza Hotel, 520 South Michigan
Ave., 312/427-3800 (FAX 312/427-7264).Unfortunately, the Congress is offering
no conference rate to us; the rate quoted to us is $139 single and $159 double.
In the past, we have recommended the Cass Hotel, 640 North Wabash Ave. (1-800/227-7850)
as a more economical alternative. Those willing to take a five minute taxi ride
may want to try the Motel 6 at 162 East Ontario St. (312/787-3580). Further
details about the fall meeting will be included in the next mailing. Updated
information about hotels, including some less expensive alternative, is available
online, click here.
Events
What else is going on in Chicago during the weekend of the meeting? At
the Art Institute, the Pharaohs of the Sun exhibition will be in its last weekend
(a special event requiring tickets). There also will be three different photography
exhibitions (photograms, Optical Delusions, Skyscrapers) AND an exhibition of
paintings by William Merritt Chase. For further information call 312/443-3600.
Opening night for both the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera is
23 September. The telephone number of the Symphony Center box office is 312/294-3000,
that for the Lyric, 312/332-2244.
THANKS TO OUTGOING COMMITTEES
The Midwest Chapter collectively applauds and thanks its outgoing officers for
jobs well done: President A. Peter Brown and Elinor Olin, Representative to
the AMS Council. Our thanks also go to the outgoing Nominating Committee (James
Briscoe, chair; Shirley Bean; and Stephen Self). Not only gratitude but admiration
is due the outgoing Program Committee (Camilla Cai, chair; Lawrence Bennett;
and James Parsons), all of whom have signed right back up for further duties
(gluttons for punishment). Finally, kudos to Mark Clague and Naomi AndrŽ for
their hard work in preparing and realizing the 2000 Spring Meeting at the University
of Michigan, even though they couldn't do anything about the blizzard that attacked
Ann Arbor with the musicologists.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING
Ann Arbor, Michigan, 8 April 1999
The meeting was called to order by President A. Peter Brown at 3:45 P.M. After balloting for the offices of president and representative to the AMS Council, the minutes of the fall 2000 business meetings were approved without correction. Treasurer Mary Natvig reported that the financial situation of the chapter appeared good.
President Brown announced that the fall 2000 meeting would take place on the Loop campus of National-Louis University, and that the chapter had been invited by the Kansas City Stravinsky Festival to hold the spring 2001 meeting in that city (24-25 March).
James L. Zychowicz (on behalf of the Program Policy Committee) delivered the report requested by President Brown at the fall 1999 meeting (see p. 3). In the ensuing discussion, Peter Brown recommended sending future mailings first class, bulk mail having proven too slow and unreliable. By consensus, the chapter agreed that return addresses need not be suppressed from anonymous abstracts. It was emphasized that only current chapter members might propose papers. After various refinements, the chapter approved the report, with thanks to the committee that prepared it (James L. Zychowicz, Camilla Cai, and Pamela Fox).
On behalf of Elinor Olin, President Brown reported that the AMS Council, following the suggestion of the Midwest Chapter, had nominated Luther Dittmer as an honorary member. The next student representative to the AMS Council would be selected by the University of Wisconsin Madison. President Brown recommended that the chapter consider further help to defray expenses of student representatives in the future.
Before the results of the election were read out, President Brown asked that a new home be found for the chapter website. Camilla Cai was elected the new President of the Chapter, and Craig Parker the new Chapter Representative to the AMS Council. With a gracious acknowledgment of all who had run for office and all who had participated in the planning and execution of this meeting, President Brown adjourned at 4:11 P.M.
. . . and the Chapter repaired to a local restaurant for the first (but surely not the last) Chapter Dinner.
Respectfully submitted,
Steven M. Whiting, Secretary
REPORT OF THE PROGRAM POLICY COMMITTEE
As the result of discussions at the spring and fall 1999 meetings, the Program Policy Committee (James L. Zychowicz, Camilla Cai, and Pamela Fox) submitted its report at the spring 2000 meeting in Ann Arbor. The text that follows reflects the revisions suggested in the ensuing discussion. It comprises a set of Proposal Guidelines and a Program Committee Checklist. The Committee also proposed a calendar, which will appear in the next mailing.
Proposal Guidelines.
Current chapter members are invited to submit papers on any subject to the program
committee. The program committee will give preference to members who have not
read papers during the past two meetings. Abstracts should be 500 words or less
and explain the premise of the paper, the conclusions reached, and the methodology
used. Papers are to be original, that is, not a previously given paper or one
that is based on research already published. Abstracts should include a list
of equipment needed for the presentation. The usual equipment available includes
a piano, tape player, overhead project (with screen); presentations requiring
other kinds of equipment must be discussed with the program chair. Regular members
should send one copy of the proposal to the program chair and blind copies (copies
without their names) to the other members of the committee. Students are eligible
for the outstanding paper prize supported by A-R Editions and Indiana University
Press. Student members who want to compete must express their wish to program
chair and must also send of the complete paper to each member of the program
committee.
Committee Checklist
Preliminary tasks. Determine date of meeting. Announce call for papers two months
in advance (minimum). Submit call for papers in advance of Chapter Mailing deadline.
Post call for papers on AMS-L. Review of valid presenters. Program chair obtains
current roster from treasurer to confirm membership of proposers when abstracts
arrive. Program chair reviews last two meeting programs to see who gave papers.
Evaluation. Evaluate proposals based on word count, adherence to guidelines,
and value of research. Program committee should investigate any proposal that
seems derivative. Program chair identifies any special circumstances to the
president and treasurer. Program chair will review names of proposers against
the list of members who presented at the last two meetings. Provisions for a
Second Call. If the number of proposals is equal to or less than the number
of papers planned for the meeting, the Program Chair-with the approval of the
President-will issue a second call for proposals on the AMS-L and/or contact
members of the chapter to propose papers or encourage other members to do so.
Student Prize
Program Committee will convene after the last paper of the Spring Meeting to
decide on the best student papers; criteria include originality, methodology,
and presentation; Program Committee members will abstain from voting on papers
of their students, and the Committee will then invoke the President to assist
in this award
CODETTA
Speaking of student prizes: congratulations to Jewel A. Smith (University of Cincinnati), winner of the A-R Editions prize for her paper "Playing Chorales at the Piano: Performance at the Moravian Young Ladies' Seminary, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania," read at the Chicago meeting last fall, and to Judith Kuhn (University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee), winner of the Indiana University Press prize for "Shostakovich's Intimate Voice: An Approach to Language and Meaning in the Fourth Quartet.". . . .
Please note the new web address (overleaf) for the Midwest Chapter, with thanks to Mark Clague for volunteering to take over the site. . . .
This mailing includes Newsletter 2000, compiled and edited by Peter M. Alexander. As you read of your colleagues' accomplishments, you may note the relative thinness of this year's Newsletter (Peter certainly has). A Y2K attack of excessive modesty? Hoard not your accomplishments for 2001. . . .
The summer months often bring changes of address. Please remember to notify the Chapter Treasurer, Mary Natvig, of your new mailing address. You may even take advantage of the opportunity to catch up with Chapter dues. . . .
A fruitful and relaxing summer to all!
