MIDWEST CHAPTER
THIRD MAILING, 2001-2002
January 2002
GENERAL
The present mailing is being sent to all AMS members residing within the geographic
area of the Midwest Chapter, whether they are Chapter members or not. Geographically,
the Midwest Chapter is the largest chapter of the AMS, and it comprises nearly
a quarter of the national membership. It holds two meetings a year--the fall
meeting usually in Chicago, the spring meeting rotating among the rest of the
dozen states that make up the Chapter. A call for papers for the spring meeting
in Indianapolis follows below, and we encourage you to submit your work and
to attend the meeting.
If you are not a member of the Midwest Chapter, we encourage you to join. The annual dues are $10 ($5 for students and emeritus members). Please make your check payable to "AMS Midwest Chapter," and send it to the Chapter Treasurer, Prof. Dane Heuchemer, whose address is given on the last page of this mailing. You will be apprised four times a year of the Chapter's activities, and you will receive the annual Newsletter, which details the professional activities of Chapter members as reported by themselves.
On-line membership registration and further information about the chapter can be found at the Chapter's Website: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~claguem/amsmidwest/
CHAPTER
BUSINESS
The Midwest Chapter held its fall 2001 meeting on the Michigan Avenue campus
of National-Louis University in Chicago. Our appreciation and thanks go to Dr.
Elinor Olin for the spacious lecture room, breakfast goodies, and general conviviality.
Dr. Olin and Dr. Roberta Lindsey served on the Program Committee and presented
an interesting and diverse spectrum of papers with thought provoking responses
by Dr. James Borders.
During the Business meeting, Dane Heuchmer, Chapter Treasurer gave the following financial report: Balance at time of change of officers: $5049.09 Accounts Receivable--dues taken in since change of officer: $590 Accounts payable-- expenses since change of officer: $222.37 Current chapter balance: $5416.72
A Nominating Committee is forming a slate of candidates for the office of Chapter President. The committee is chaired by Dr. Jeff Wasson [jwasson@barat.edu] who is serving along with Dr. Mary Natvig [mnatvig@bgnet.bgsu.edu] and Dr. Brian Hart. [U40BJH1@wpo.cso.niu.edu]. Please contact the committee with suggestions for presidential candidates. In conformance with by-law A.2 to article V of the Chapter Constitution, additional nominations may be submitted by mail to the President. Any additional nomination must be signed by three Chapter members, must include the nominee's written statement that he or she will indeed serve if elected, and must reach the President not later than seven weeks before the Business Meeting in Indianapolis. The next mailing will include thumbnail CVs of the candidates and a detachable ballot, for those preferring to vote by mail.
At the national meeting in Atlanta last November, Jan Herlinger convened the annual breakfast meeting for chapter officers. Among the items discussed of concern to the chapter is that materials appropriate for the chapter archive can besent to Marjorie Hassen, the archivist for the AMS national office [hassen@pobox.upenn.edu]. Of interest would be materials related to the history of the chapter and its activities.
SPRING
MEETING AND CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The spring meeting will be held at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
(IUPUI) April 13-14 hosted by Roberta Lindsey.
Chapter members are invited to submit abstracts of papers on any subject to the Program Committee (see instructions below). The committee will favor submissions from members who have not read at Midwest Chapter meetings during the preceding year. In 500 WORDS OR LESS, abstracts should explain the originality, methodology, and conclusions of the paper. They should also indicate any audio-visual equipment needed and the time required to deliver the papers (papers of 20-25 minutes are the norm).
The deadline for submission is February 15, 2002.
Students wishing to compete for the annual prizes offered by Indiana University Press and A-R Editions, should so indicate in the letter covering the signed abstract. In order to be considered students must submit three copies of the complete paper to the program committee no later than the meeting at which they read the paper. Winners of the awards will be announced after the spring 2002 meeting.
