A.1. The AMS Midwest Chapter Spring meeting will take place 2Ð4 April 2004, at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. John Schuster-Craig and Lisa Feurzeig of the GVSU Music Department have made arrangements at the Richard M. DeVos Center in downtown Grand Rapids.

Registration for Chapter meetings is free to members in good standing. You may join or renew your membership by paying annual dues to the Chapter treasurer at this time, as well. The DeVos Center at Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Michigan, will host the 2–4 April 2004 meeting of the AMS Midwest Chapter.


Our keynote speaker will be Richard Crawford, from the University of Michigan. His topic will be "A Year in the Life: Gershwin in 1925."

3. NOTE: Student presenters who wish to have their papers considered for the best-paper prizes must provide three (3) copies of the paper to Karin Pendle no later than 4:30 PM on Saturday, 3 April.

4. Dinner in honor of the retirement of Karin Pendle:

The Midwest Chapter wishes to honor Professor Karin Pendle on the occasion of her December 2003 retirement with an informal dinner, to take place Friday evening, 2 April. Karin has provided outstanding service to the Chapter for a number of years, as President, committee leader, and presenter of excellent papers. If you would like to join us in honoring Karin, please contact President James Briscoe at <jbriscoe@butler.edu>.

The dinner (Dutch treat) will be at San Chez at 8:00 PM. Directions from the Days Inn (suggested Conference hotel: take Pearl St. west under the freeway. Turn left onto Mt. Vernon St. After passing the Grand Valley campus, turn left at the first traffic light onto Fulton St. Cross the Grand River. Continue straight through the large intersection at Market St., then cross two smaller streets Ñ Ottawa and Ionia. The San Chez is on the next corner, at Fulton and Commerce (38 West Fulton).

Parking may be difficult to find. In the evening, parking is free at any space with a parking meter. San Chez has a lot behind their building. There is also a municipal lot at Ionia and Fulton. You may wish to car pool, or to walk. San Chez is a ten or fifteen minute walk from the Days Inn.

5. Committee Report: The Ad hoc Committee on Chapter Funds and Membership Development will present the following items for discussion and vote at the business meeting on Saturday:

a. Travel Stipends for Student Presenters at Chapter Meetings: The committee will recommend that up to three stipends per meeting of $75 each be available for student presenters to alleviate travel and lodging expenses. Student presenters would need to submit an application for the stipend, to be reviewed by the chapter treasurer and president.

b. Hospitality/Social Events at Chapter Meetings: The committee will recommend that chapter sponsorship of hospitality events (e.g., wine and cheese, dessert, luncheon) for the express purpose of social interaction among colleagues be incorporated into the schedule of each chapter meeting. Local arrangements would organize the event, with reimbursement from the chapter treasurer.

c. Other suggestions received by the committee (not constituting ongoing expenses or events) will also be mentioned for further discussion and consideration.

6. Election of Chapter President: During the business meeting on Saturday afternoon, the Chapter will elect a

President to succeed James Briscoe, whose two-year term of office is concluding. The two candidates for the

office of President are as follows:

 

Vincent Corrigan

Vincent Corrigan has received degrees in music education, piano, harpsichord, and musicology from Carnegie-Mellon University and Indiana University. His primary interests lie in Medieval music (polyphony of the 12th and 13th centuries; early liturgies) and harpsichord performance. In 1987 he received an NEH Summer Stipend for work on the Medieval Lyric. He has studied harpsichord with the late Fernando Valenti and Marie Zorn, and musicology with John Reeves White, Edward Roessner, and Hans Tischler. He is currently professor of music history and harpsichord in the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University. Publications include a facsimile edition of the manuscript Paris, BNF lat. 1143, articles on modal transmutation, the rhythm of trouvère song, hemiola, the Codex Calixtinus, and musical transcriptions for The Medieval Lyric: A Project supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

     
 

Scott Messing

Scott Messing is the Charles A. Dana Professor of Music at Alma College. He holds a Ph.D. in historical musicology (University of Michigan, 1986). Publications include Neoclassicism in Music: From the Genesis of the Concept through the Schonberg/Stravinsky Polemic (Ann Arbor: UMI Research Press, 1988; rep. Rochester: Rochester University Press, 1996). Articles appear in Modern Art and the Condition of Music, ed. James Leggio (London and New York: Routledge, 2002); and Wien 1897: Kulturgeschichtliches Profil eines Epochenjahres, ed. Christian Glanz (Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang GmbH, 1999). Journal articles appear in The Beethoven Journal, The Journal of Musicology, Proteus, and The Michigan Academician. Book reviews are published in Notes, Slavic Review, and American Music. Scott has read numerous papers since 1980 at AMS meetings and he has chaired the Midwest AMS nominating committee. At Alma College, Scott served as Chair of the Faculty, the Humanities Division, and the Music Department.


Casting ballots for Chapter President online: AMS Midwest members who are unable to attend the Spring Meeting can vote in the election of Chapter President by visiting the Midwest website; see http://www-personal. umich.edu/~claguem/amsmidwest/voteformcurrent.html. The deadline for online voting is 11:59 PM on April 1.

7. Lodging for the Spring Meeting

Rooms are available at the Days Inn, 310 Pearl St. NW; they are holding 25 rooms at a reduced rate of $68 ($76.84 with tax). Call (616) 235-7611 to make reservations; be sure to identify yourself as a member of AMS Midwest. The block of rooms will be held until March 8. Note that the hotel is in easy walking distance of the Richard M. Devos Center.

8. Directions to the Spring Meeting

By Air: Most major carriers serve Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR). A cab to the Pearl Street Days Inn

will cost $20–25 each way.

By Train (Amtrak): Amtrak service is available from Chicago and points in between. Train 370 (Pere Marquette) leaves Chicago daily at 5:20 PM, and arrives in Grand Rapids at 10:21 PM. Train 371 leaves

Grand Rapids daily at 7:35 AM, and arrives in Chicago at 10:30 AM.

By Automobile:

From Chicago (about 3 hours from downtown, beware 1 hour time difference): Take I-94 East, then I-196 East to US-131 South (toward Kalamazoo). To get to the Days Inn, take the Pearl Street exit (#85B), turn right onto Pearl Street. The Richard M. Devos Center is located at 401 West Fulton. To go directly, from US-131 Southbound, exit at Pearl Street (#85B). Proceed through the light and go one block South to Fulton Street. Cross Fulton Street and continue South to Watson Street.  Turn left onto Watson Street and the entrance to the Watson Lot will be on the right.


From Detroit (under 3 hours): Take I-96 West into Grand Rapids. Take the Ottawa Ave exit towards

downtown (#77C); less than a mile later, turn right onto Pearl Street NW. To go directly to the conference center lot, exit at Ottawa Street (#77). Proceed through the light and continue South on Ottawa Street to Fulton Street. Turn right onto Fulton Street and proceed West to Mt. Vernon Avenue.  Turn left onto Mt. Vernon Avenue and proceed South to Watson Street.  Turn left onto Watson Street: the entrance to the Watson Lot will be on the right.

From Indianapolis (approx. 5 hours): Take I-69 North, through Fort Wayne, to I-94. Take I-94 West to Kalamazoo; take US-131 North to Grand Rapids. For the Days Inn, take the Pearl Street exit (#85B), turn right onto Pearl Street. To go directly to the conference center lot, exit at Pearl Street (#85B).


Turn left onto Pearl Street and stay in left lane. Proceed West underneath US-131 and Mt. Vernon Avenue is immediately after the highway. Turn left onto Mt. Vernon Avenue and continue South to Fulton Street.   Cross Fulton Street and continue South to Watson Street.  Turn left onto Watson St.: the entrance to the Watson Lot will be on the right.


From I-196 Eastbound: To conference center: I-196 Eastbound; Exit at Lake Michigan Drive (#75). Turn right onto Lake Michigan Drive and stay in the right lane. The road will merge to the right and Lake Michigan Drive will change to Fulton Street. Proceed East on Fulton Street to Mt. Vernon Avenue.  Turn right onto Mt. Vernon Avenue and proceed South to Watson Street.  Turn left on Watson Street and the entrance to the Watson Lot will be on the right.

Parking: Is free at both the Days Inn and at the Watson Lot.

Conference Sessions (Shuttle and Driving Directions): All conference sessions will be held at the Richard M. Devos Center on the GSVU campus in downtown Grand Rapids. The center is located at 401 West Fulton. Call (616) 331-6620 for more information.


9. Concerts in Grand Rapids during the Spring Meeting


On Friday and Saturday evenings, the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra will play a program featuring percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Works to be performed include Michael Daugherty's "UFO," Askell Massen's "Konzertstueck for Snare Drum and Orchestra," and Holst's "The Planets." The guest conductor will be Thomas Wilkins. For tickets, call (616) 454-9451, ext. 4.  Directions: DeVos Hall is less than one-half mile from the hotel. Take Pearl Street across the Grand River, turn left on Monroe; the hall is at 245 Monroe.

Also on Friday and Saturday evenings, the GVSU dance program (which is housed in the Department of Music) will present its Spring Dance Concert at the Allendale campus about 13 miles from downtown. Those who attend the dance program will have the opportunity to see the music facilities in the same building. Tickets may be

purchased through TicketsPLUS by calling (616) 222-4000, (800) 585-3737, or on the Web at www.ticketsplus.net.

Driving directions from the Days Inn to Allendale Campus: coming out of the hotel parking lot, turn left onto Pearl Street; go under US-131, and then shortly turn left on Winter. After several blocks, turn right onto Fulton, which turns into Lake Michigan. Grand Valley State University's main campus will be on your left. There is one

main street through campus; the Performing Arts Center will be on your left; the H & K parking lot on your right.

C. Membership requirements for the AMS Midwest Chapter

AMS Midwest Chapter dues are $10 per year ($5 for student and emeritus members) and cover the academic year (Sept. to Sept.). Members are encouraged to pay several years of dues in advance, to reduce bookkeeping tasks. Please note, there are no "arrears" on dues paymentsÑa payment for the current year (or next few years) will grant you membership in good standing.
