SECOND MAILING, 1999-2000 - AUGUST 1999
FALL 1999 MEETING IN CHICAGO **Make your reservation by August 26** The fall 1999 meeting of the Midwest Chapter will take place 25-26 September in Chicago, at the Congress Plaza Hotel, 520 South Michigan Avenue (corner of Michigan and Congress Parkway), in the Grant Park Room (not at DePaul University, as previously announced). The Chapter extends its thanks to Camilla Cai and the Program Committee for their hard work, the fruits of which can be seen overleaf. Accommodations: A block of rooms at the Congress Plaza has been earmarked for those attending the meeting. For reservations call 1-800/635-1666; if you prefer to visit a website, it's www.congresshotel.com. The conference rate, available to those who call no later than August 26, is $109, single or double. Alternatively, the Cass Hotel, 640 North Wabash Ave. (1 800/227-7850), will put you up for $69 (single) or $89 (double), plus tax. The Cass is a short walk away from the meeting site. Parking for the Congress Plaza Hotel is available at 610 South Wabash Avenue (between Michigan and State) with ticket validation at the front desk or the bellman's stand. Costs for overnight parking are $18 valet, $17 self; there may be an additional charge for in-out valet service. Parking for eight hours or less is $10 valet, $6 self. In the past, we've directed those requiring short-term parking to the Grant Park South Garage; this year, construction in the Grant Park area may make this a more daunting option than usual. Travel: Airport Express runs vans from both airports (1-800/654-7871); you may make a reservation in advance. The cost from O'Hare is $16 one way or $29 round trip; the cost from Midway is $11.50 one way and $21 round trip. Less expensive public transportation can be had from either airport. From O'Hare take the Blue Line (exit at Jackson stop); from Midway take the Orange Line (exit at Adams stop). Cab fare from the airports ranges between $25 and $40. Call 1-800/ TAXICAB. (All these prices, though verified late July, are subject to change.) If driving from the south on I-90/94 (Dan Ryan Expressway) or from the north on I-90/94 (Kennedy Expressway), take the Congress Parkway exit east, follow Congress to Michigan Avenue, and turn right; the hotel will be on the corner. From points west on I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway), you may also follow Congress east to Michigan. From points north on Lake Shore Dr. (Route 41), exit at Randolph, turn left on Michigan, proceed seven blocks to the corner of Congress (via this route, construction may be a problem). If you're coming from the south on Lake Shore Drive (Route 41), exit at Balbo, turn right on State, turn right on Congress, turn right on Michigan. From points west on I-55 (Stevenson Expressway), exit on Lake Shore Drive north, then follow the above directions. Cultural Events: On the evenings of 24 and 25 September, the Chicago Symphony with Pinchas Zukerman will perform the Violin Concerto no. 2 by Bach and Bart—k's Viola Concerto, with William Eddins at the podium. Maestro Zukerman will then conduct Mendelssohn's Fifth Symphony. The telephone number of the Symphony Center box office is 312/294-3000. For its opening night gala on 25 September, the Lyric Opera is presenting Verdi's Falstaff; tickets range from $54 to $300 (call 312/332-2244, ext. 500). At the Museum of Contemporary Art (220 East Chicago), special exhibitions include photographs of urban life in Mali by Malick Sidibˇ (his first show in Chicago) and "small aggressions: works on paper by Laylah Ali." For further information, call 312/280-2660.

SPRINGTIME IN ANN ARBOR The Midwest Chapter will hold its millennial meeting at the University of Michigan on 8-9 April 2000. Special attractions will include a performance by the Watts Prophets (with Toni Blackman) and the usual wealth of (free) concerts and recitals at the School of Music. A Chapter dinner is planned, and the Department of Musicology at Michigan will host a breakfast on Sunday morning. Further details about the meeting and a call for papers will follow in the third mailing. Information will also be posted at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~claguem/amsmidwestmeeting.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER . . . Through a combination of unfortunate circumstances, the first mailing was so delayed that it seemed best to send it out via first-class mail. However, we did not want to bankrupt the Chapter by including the 1999 Newsletter therein, even though Peter Alexander had completed it on time (and had bent over backwards to do so). That is why you are receiving the Newsletter with the present mailing. Thanks to Peter for his hard editorial labor, and apologies to all members for the delay. Members are encouraged to send news of their professional accomplishments to the Newsletter editor, preferably by e-mail: peter-alexander@uiowa.edu (please make sure to indicate diacritical marks). By snail mail, the address is Dr. Peter Alexander, Arts Center Relations, 100 Old Public Library, Iowa City, IA 52242-1373. The deadline for submissions is 1 April 2000 firm. Any report received thereafter will be held for the 2001 Newsletter. As Peter points out, "there is no statute of limitations for the Newsletter. If you did it, we'll run it, regardless of when you did it." Finally, please remember that reports are printed pretty much as submitted; make sure your report is accurate, clear, and consistent with pertinent bibliographic norms.
STUDENT WINNERS The outgoing Program Committee, chaired by Pamela Fox, has announced the winners of the student prizes for papers read at the Chapter meetings of fall 1998 and spring 1999. The recipient of the A-R Editions Award is Rebecca Wagner Oettinger (University of Wisconsin-Madison), for "Popular Song and the Politics of Resistance in the Augsburg Interim." Jane A. Warburton (Ohio State University) will receive the Indiana University Press Award for "Questions of Attribution in Three Medieval Texts on Species Theory." As always, the Chapter is grateful to A-R Editions and the Indiana University Press for their generous encouragement of its student scholars.
NEWS AND DUES As announced in the last mailing, annual dues have "skyrocketed" to $10 ($5 for student members). Treasurer Mary Natvig will welcome your check payable to "AMS Midwest Chapter." She will also welcome prompt notification of changes of address. After every mailing, the Secretary receives a sizable stack of undelivered and/or undeliverable missives, which cost the Chapter dearly. Please keep us posted, because no one else will; and the Postal Service does not forward bulk mail. Steven M. Whiting, Director Center for European Studies Associate Professor of Musicology.
