AMERICAN MUSICOLOGICAL SOCIETY
MIDWEST CHAPTER

THIRD MAILING, 2002-2003
December 2002

INDEX: Greetings, Spring Meeting, Call for Papers, 2001-2 Student Paper Winners, Chapter Business, Treasurer's Report, Nominations Needed

GREETINGS FOR THE AMS MIDWEST CHAPTER

This mailing is being sent to all members of the American Musicological Society residing within the geographic area of the Midwest Chapter, whether you are a Chapter member or not. The Midwest Chapter is one of the largest of the regional chapters in the AMS covering Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The regional chapters of the AMS have separate memberships from the national society, so you are not “automatically” a member of the Midwest Chapter just by getting this newsletter. The Midwest chapter hosts two meetings annually, programming twenty-four to thirty papers given by students, professors, and other interested scholars. The fall meeting is usually in Chicago and the spring meeting rotates among the rest of the states in the Chapter. The Chapter offers two prizes for best student papers presented at its meetings and sends out four mailings each year detailing chapter activities. The chapter also produces an annual Newsletter, which details professional activities of the Chapter members. If you’re not a member of the Midwest Chapter, we encourage you to join. There is an insert in this newsletter detailing how to join

SPRING MEETING: UNIVERSTIY OF WASHINGTON, ST. LOUIS, MARCH 22-23

The Chapter's Spring meeting will be in St. Louis, March 22-23. Our host will by Washington University and local arrangements are being coordinated by Dolores Pesce. Current plans call for using the Best Western Inn at the Park as the conference hotel ($86.15 single, $97.64 double). They will hold a block of 20 rooms until March 1.

• Call for Proposals

Chapter members are invited to submit abstracts of papers on any subject to the Program Committee (see instructions below). Proposals for sessions or presentations in innovative formats are welcome. The committee will favor submissions from members who have not presented at Midwest Chapter meetings during the preceding year. Abstracts should be 500 words or less for those holding the Ph.D. Students should submit an abstract of at least 1000 words. Abstracts should explain the originality, methodology, and conclusions of the paper. Only a single proposal for a panel is necessary, but it should indicate the overall concept and the areas, which each panelist will discuss. Abstracts should also indicate any audio-visual equipment needed and the time required to deliver the paper (papers of 20-25 minutes are the norm).

Proposals must be received by Friday, 31 January 2003, by 11:59 p.m. E.S.T.

On-line (preferred)
Visit the AMS Midwest Chapter Web site at

Your proposal will be processed automatically. You should receive a confirmation email within three days. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact the web page manager or resubmit your proposal.

CHAPTER BUSINESS

The Midwest Chapter held its fall 2002 meeting on the Michigan Avenue campus of National-Louis University in Chicago. Our appreciation and thanks go to Dr. Elinor Olin for the spacious lecture room, breakfast goodies, and general conviviality. The program committee of Charles Atkinson (chair), Susan Filler, and Edward Kottick presented an interesting and diverse array of papers.

The Treasurer's Report:

Since the spring 2002 meeting, including dues taken before the morning session of the fall 2002 meeting:

Received:                                             $745

Expenses:                                            $723.57

Net gain since the April meeting          $21.43

Current balance is                                $5958.32

At the national meeting in Columbus last November, Rufus Hallmark convened the annual breakfast meeting for chapter officers. Among the items discussed of concern to the chapter was a presentation by Michael Tusa (Chair of the Chapter Fund Committee) who reminded the officers of the availability of modest funds to cover extraordinary expenses of the chapter.

NOMINATIONS NEEDED--UPCOMING OFFICER ELECTIONS

A Nominating Committee is forming a slate of candidates for Chapter Officers. The committee is chaired by Larry Bennet [bennettl@wabash.edu] who is serving along with BethAnne Zamso [zamsow.ken@mcleodusa.net] and James Zychowicz [jzychowicz@aol.com]. Chapter officers up for election include Secretary, Treasurer, and AMS Council Representative. The duties of the officers can be found at the chapter Web site http://www-personal.umich.edu/~claguem/amsmidwest/. Please contact the committee with suggestions for possible candidates. In conformance with by-law A.2 to article V of the Chapter Constitution, additional nominations may be submitted by mail to the President. Any additional nomination must be signed by three Chapter members, must include the nominee’s written statement that he or she will indeed serve if elected, and must reach the President not later than seven weeks before the Business Meeting in St. Louis. The next mailing will include thumbnail CVs of the candidates and a detachable ballot, for those preferring to vote by mail.
