FALL 2000 MEETING IN CHICAGO
Meeting Website

The fall 2000 meeting of the Midwest Chapter will take place 23-24 September in Chicago, at the National-Louis University, Loop Campus, 122 South Michigan Avenue, in room 5006. This is a new location for our annual Chicago meeting, and it's most advantageous (down the street from Symphony center, across the street from the Art Institute). The Chapter extends its thanks to Elinor Olin for handling the local arrangements, and to Lawrence Bennett and the Program Committee, who have assembled the excellent program.

Accommodations
In the past we have suggested the Congress Plaza, 520 South Michigan Avenue (corner of Michigan and Congress Parkway), because past meetings have been either there or in the vicinity. For reservations, call 1-800/635-1666; if you prefer to visit a website, it's www.congresshotel.com. We were, however, unable to obtain a conference rate this year. The price will be at least $139 single and $159 double, if any rooms are available. A less expensive alternative is the Cass Hotel, 640 North Wabash Ave. (1-800/227-7850), but as of this writing they are sold out. A hot tip from Larry Bennett: try the Chicago Downtown Travelodge at 65 East Harrison (1 888/515-6375). Larry got a double room for $99. Parking for the Congress Plaza Hotel is available at 610 South Wabash Avenue (between Michigan and State) with ticket validation at the front desk or the bellman's stand. This is within walking distance of the meeting. Continuing construction on Millennium Park makes predictions about parking in the Grant Park area chancy. We'll try to post advice on the Chapter website.

Travel
Airport Express runs vans from both airports (1-800/654-7871); you may make a reservation in advance. Ask to be dropped off at the Palmer House (the hotel closest to National-Louis). The cost from O'Hare is 17.50 one way or $31 round trip; the cost from Midway is $12.50 one way and $23 round trip. Less expensive public transportation can be had from either airport. From O'Hare take the Blue Line; from Midway take the Orange Line (exit at Adams stop). Cab fare from the airports ranges between 30 and $50. Call 1-800/TAXICAB. (All these prices, though verified mid-August, are subject to change.)

Cultural Events
On the evenings of 22 and 23 September, Daniel Barenboim will conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in performances of Mahler's Symphony no. 7 and Aurora by Augusta Reed Thomas. Tickets range in price from $24 to $185. The telephone number of the Symphony Center box office is 312/294-3000. For its opening night gala on 23 September, the Lyric Opera is presenting Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades. As of writing, ticket availability is restricted to those costing $59 (nosebleed) or $350, with not much left in between those extremes (call 312/332-2244, ext. 500). At the Art Institute, the Pharaohs of the Sun exhibition will be in its last weekend (a special event requiring tickets). There also will be three different photography exhibitions (photograms, Optical Delusions, Skyscrapers) AND an exhibition of paintings by William Merritt Chase. For further information call 312/443-3600.

GUIDELINES FOR PAPER PROPOSALS
Current chapter members are invited to submit papers on any subject to the Program Committee. Priority will be given to dues-paying members of the Chapter. Scholars outside the chapter who wish to give papers are encouraged to join the Chapter.

The Program Committee will give preference to members who have not read papers during the past two meetings. Abstracts should be 500 word or fewer and explain the premise of the paper, the conclusions reached, and the methodology used. Papers should not have been given at an AMS national meeting.

Proposals should include a list of equipment needed for the presentation. The usual equipment available includes a piano, tape player, and overhead projected (with screen). Presentations requiring other kinds of equipment must be discussed with the Program Chair.

Members should send one signed copy of the proposal to the Chapter President and blind copies (without any identification) to each member of the Program Committee.

The Program Committee (see checklist) is responsible for evaluating proposals based on the above stated guidelines and the creation of a coherent slate of sessions. If the call for proposals yields an insufficient number of proposals that meeting the guidelines, the Program Chair will solicit further papers to complete the program. Again, preference will be given to members who did not present at the last two meetings.

Students are eligible for the outstanding paper prize supported by A-R Editions and Indiana University Press. Student members who want to compete must express their wish to the Program Chair and must also send a copy of the complete paper to each member of the Program Committee. The Chapter urges advisors to attend their students’ presentations.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE CHECKLIST
At least two months before the deadline for proposals, the Program Chair should contact the Chapter Secretary to confirm the date of the next meeting and next mailing. The Program Chair will submit the call for papers to the Chapter Secretary and publish it at least two months in advance of the deadline for submitting proposals. The Chair then posts the call for papers at the chapter website and on the AMS-L.

The Program Chair will obtain the current roster from the Chapter Treasurer to confirm the membership of those submitting proposals.

The Program Chair will review programs from the last two meetings to determine who gave papers.

The Program Committee will evaluate proposals based on adherence to the guidelines and the value of the research. The Program Committee should investigate any proposal that seems derivative.

The Program Chair will review names of proposers against the list of members who presented at the last two meetings.

The Program Chair will inform the Chapter President if the response to the call for papers is insufficient for a coherent program. At that point the Chapter President and Program Chair will solicit proposals that meet the Chapter guidelines to complete the program. The Program Chair will review the programs of the last two meetings and give preference to those who presented prior to that time.

The Program Committee will determine the program within one week after the deadline for proposals. The Program Chair will discuss any special circumstances with the Chapter President, and the Program Chair will submit the program to the Secretary as soon as it is determined and subsequently post the program at the Chapter website and to the AMS-L.

The Program Committee will determine student prize winners within two weeks after the Spring Meeting. The Program Chair or Chapter President and representatives of Indiana University Press and A-R Editions will confer the awards at the Fall business meeting. . . .
