Preliminary Program
Registration
As always, registration for Chapter meetings is free to members in good standing--just
fill out a registration form and pick up a nametag at the registration table
outside the meeting room. You may join or renew your membership by paying annual
dues to the Chapter treasurer at this time as well. To check your current membership
status, visit our membership and dues
pages.
Hotel
Update: We have tentatively booked a block of 10 extra rooms at Pickwick
Airport for April 12 and 13th. These are short-term apartments. To make reservations
click on the link: http://www.bornsmgt.com/pickwick_farms_airport.htm.
Contact Dr. Roberta Lindsey <rlindsey@iupui.edu>
for information about alternate hotels (with transportation to and from the
meeting) as conference site accommodations are currently available only on 4/13
(see below). Special student housing is also available at a reduced cost.
Students should e-mail Dr. Roberta Lindsey
<rlindsey@iupui.edu>in order to secure a room. For other alternatives
visit the sites of the various national chains.
Although we have stiff competition for rooms from another, much larger convention in Indianapolis, we have been able to arrange for a block of 20 rooms at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel. Free transportation is available before the morning sessions on Saturday and Sunday with return transportation at the end of the afternoon session on Saturday. The flat room rate is $119 for both Single and Double occupancy and is only available to us until March 15 (as of March 25 a few rooms were available for 4/13). Individuals are to make their own guest room reservations by calling 1-800-627-2700 and identifying AMS-Midwest to insure the special rate. Please act quickly since we only have this rate until March 15. Parking is available at the hotel's underground facility for an $8 rate per day. (The University Place Conference Center and Hotel has stated that there is a strong possibility of increased room availability if more than 20 rooms are required, and if reservations are made by February 15.) Special student housing is also available at a reduced cost. Students please e-mail Dr. Roberta Lindsey <rlindsey@iupui.edu>in order to secure a room. For other alternatives visit the sites of the various national chains.
Travel
Indianapolis International
is the primary airport for the city. It is a busy airport and a hub for
many commuter flights. It is best to make reservations at least
two weeks in advance. Our conference hotel provides a shuttle service
to and from the airport. Please check out their site
for more information.
FROM THE SOUTH OR NORTH
If driving from the south on I-65 North follow the signs to Indiana Medical
Center (IUPUI) by transferring to I-70 West exiting at West Street.
Proceed North to Michigan Street ( a one-way street going west) and turn
left. Go west or straight until you reach University Boulevard (second
stop light) and turn north or right. The Indiana University Hospital is
on your left side and the University Place Conference Center and Hotel is on
your right. Turn east or right onto North Street (the first stop
light). The University Place Conference Center and Hotel is to your right
and has a pull in drive to accommodate unloading and loading of luggage.
(Caution: Do not park in the surface lots without a parking permit at
the risk of receiving a ticket and being towed.) If you are arriving from
the north on I-65 South, take the West Street/Martin Luther King, Jr. Street
exit. Follow this street to Michigan Street ( a one-way street
going west) and turn left. Go west or straight until you reach University
Boulevard (second stop light) and turn north or right. The Indiana University
Hospital is on your left side and the University Place Conference Center and
Hotel is on your right. Turn east or right onto North Street (the
first stop light). Our hotel is located to the right and has a pull in
drive to accommodate unloading and loading of luggage. The most convenient
parking is in the underground facility attached to the hotel. Click here
for a map of the IUPUI Campus and conference site.
FROM THE EAST OR WEST
The principal East/West route into Indianapolis is I-70. If driving from
the East on I-70, take the West Street/Martin Luther King, Jr. Street
The University Place Conference Center and Hotel is
on the right and has a pull in drive to accommodate unloading and loading of
luggage. If you are driving on I-70 West follow the signs to the
Indiana Medical Center (IUPUI), exiting at West Street. Proceed
North to Michigan Street ( a one-way street going west) and turn left.
Go west or straight until you reach University Boulevard (second stop light)
and turn north or right. The Indiana University Hospital is on your left
side and the University Place Conference Center and Hotel is on your right.
Turn east or right onto North Street (the first stop light). The
University Place Conference Center and Hotel, on the right, has a pull in drive
to accommodate unloading and loading of luggage. Click here
for a map of the IUPUI Campus and conference site.
Construction
Warning!
Major road construction is taking place on I-70 East into Indianapolis. Alternate
route is US 40 into Indianapolis. This turns into Washington Boulevard. Take
US40/Washington Boulevard to West Street and turn North onto West Street. Turn
right or west onto Michigan Road. (The rest of the directions are the same once
you are on campus.)
Parking
The most convenient parking is the underground parking garage attached to the
Hotel (cost is $8 per day). For the conference, parking will be available
in the lot immediately to the west of the building. Click here
for a map of the IUPUI Campus and conference site.
Food
An anonymous
donor has provided 30 lunches for the participants--members of AMS for Saturday's
lunch at the Indiana Historical Society. (Lunch is free for the first 30 AMS
members who sign-up at the door to the conference.)
There are many restaurants surrounding our campus. The hotel has two excellent restaurants: Chancellors and The Bistro. The relatively formal setting of Chancellors is located on the ground floor and is attached to a Sport's Bar for those wishing a slightly louder, more informal atmosphere. The Bistro is on the second floor and is usually only available for breakfast and lunch. Additionally, there is a limited food court within the Conference Center building.
A short walking distance from our conference site is the Stardust Cafe in the Indiana Historical Society (on the corner of West and New York Streets). This cafeteria style cafe overlooks the downtown canal and has great food at a medium price ($6.00 for a generous sandwich and soft drink). Also within walking distance is TGIF Fridays. Please allow plenty of time at this restaurant since reservations are not accepted and it is always crowded.
In the downtown area, a short 5 minute drive away, is the Circle Center Mall with the Palomino ($$$), California Cafe ($$), and Johnny Rockets ($$) restaurants and food courts, St. Elmo's Steak House, Bucca di Beppo, Ruth Chris's Steak House, Hard Rock Cafe, Spaghetti Factory, and many others. Parking (unless a special event is taking place in one of the two sporting arenas) is $1.00 for three hours in the Circle Center Parking Garages.
Chapter
Dinner
Reservations for 25 have been made
at the Rathskeller Restaurant in downtown Indianapolis.
This informal dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. and will probably cost each attendee
around $20-25.
Shopping
In addition to the Circle Center Mall, there are many smaller shops in the adjacent
Claypool Courts. North of the city (about a 15-20 minute drive) are a
number of smaller malls and bookstores. Please see the registration packet
provided at your hotel check-in.
Links
For a complete index to restaurants, shopping, and other events, visit the Indianapolis
Convention and Visitors Association page or Indianapolis.com.
Weather
Since Spring in Indianapolis is extremely changeable, visit the National
Weather Associations Indianapolis page to find out the most current information.
Be prepared from everything between 70 degrees and sunny to 30 degrees and rainy.
If the weather is good, a long stroll along Canal Walk over through White River
Gardens and the Indianapolis Zoo is wonderful. The Canal Walk is also
a great place for a short stroll as well.
Local Arrangements
Dr. Roberta Lindsey is handling local
arrangements.
Further details about the Spring meeting will be added as they become available.
