Proposal Instructions
Chapter members are invited to submit abstracts of papers on any subject to the Program Committee (see submission instructions below). Proposals for sessions or presentations in innovative formats are welcome. The abstract is limited to a maximum of 500 words. Abstracts should explain the originality, methodology, and conclusions of the paper. In addition, the proposal must specify any audio-visual equipment needed. The maximum time limit for individual papers is 25 minutes. Preference will be given to proposals from individuals who have not read a paper at AMS Midwest within the year prior to the fall 2008 meeting (i.e., at the fall 2007 or spring 2008 meetings).

Notes: The submission of an abstract presupposes that the proposer agrees to present the paper should the Program Committee accept it. It is also important that papers presented at Chapter meetings adhere to the topic and general argument proposed in the abstract. See also the general guidelines for AMS Midwest paper proposals.

Panel Sessions
Panels encompassing aspects of a single topic, of up to one hour in length, and made up of two or thee participating speakers may be proposed. Although only one abstract is required (500-word maximum), it should contain a succinct description of each panelist’s contribution and state the time and audio-visual equipment required.

Student Papers
It was decided at the Fall 2007 meeting that student submissions should be accompanied by a signed statement from the student’s advisor (or other faculty member from the home institution, as appropriate) to indicate faculty approval of the paper. These may be faxed to Elinor Olin at 224.233.2657 or emailed to amsmidwestpresident@umich.edu from the faculty member's institutional email address. Limited travel funding is also available for students presenting papers at Chapter meetings (click here for details).

Membership Requirements
You must be a registered AMS Midwest Chapter member in order to be eligible to present papers at Chapter meetings. If you are not presently a member, click here to join online or contact Chapter Treasurer Jessie Fillerup at amsmidwesttreasurer@umich.edu. There is no additional registration fee for Chapter meetings.

Abstract Submission
Go to the online proposal form on the Chapter website. Fill in the form completely and click the submit button. Your proposal will be processed automatically. To avoid changes in formatting, send one blind (anonymous) abstract, and one signed (i.e., author-identified) abstract, as Word (.doc), .rtf, or .pdf attachments, to Chapter President Elinor Olin at amsmidwestpresident@umich.edu. If you are unable to send attachments directly, you may cut and paste your abstract into the online submission form.

You should receive a confirmation e-mail form the Chapter President within three days. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact the President or resubmit your proposal. The President will send all proposals as blind submissions to the Program Committee. Do not send your proposal directly to the program committee.

Student Paper Competition
Students wishing to compete for the annual prizes offered by Indiana University Press and A-R Editions should so indicate on the online submission form (see above). In order to be considered, students must submit three copies of the complete paper to the Program Committee no later than the meeting at which they read the paper. Winners of the awards will be announced after the Spring 2009 meeting.

Results
You will be contacted by the Chapter President with the program committee’s decision by early August. Note that the Chapter President is not part of the review process, but retains the signed copy of each proposal to connect successful applicants with their abstracts.

Questions
General questions about proposals may be sent to the program committee chair at amsmidwestprogramchair@umich.edu. Do not send finished proposals or drafts to this address. All abstracts should be sent to amsmidwestpresident@umich.edu.

Thank you for your interest in our upcoming meeting of the AMS Midwest Chapter.
