We the Jury

Charlie Gragg

Uses advanced capabilities of productivity tools (e.g., - word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics, etc.) and specialized software (e.g., test generators, concept mapping software) to organize and achieve professional work. The We-the-Jury unit demonstrates the use of advanced capabilities of productivity tools and specialized software to organize professional work. Advanced capabilities are demonstrated with conventional tools (Word, Excel, Netscape, Explorer, Publisher), with specialized software (IntegradePro, Adobe Photoshop, EndNote, Arcview), and with digital cameras (see Digital Photographs and Video). The History of the Death Penalty lesson plan is a Word document that integrates tables and graphic components, as well as Endnote bibliography formatting and hyperlinks (for easier revision and adaptation of the lesson plan). The Sample Death Penalty Graph uses custom chart formatting, such as fill patterns for clarity with black-and-white printing, and is provided as a model of a student assignment. The Mock School Newspaper Rubric illustrates the advanced use of special table formatting, such as vertical print and column calculations, as well as hyperlinks, electronic mail links, and comment fields. The Sample Mock School Newspaper models the students' culminating performance of understanding - this Publisher document integrates an Excel graph, a Word table, and digital photographs in a single document. Administratively, both IntegradePro and Excel are used to create and maintain student records. Daily attendance, marking period progress reports, and final grades are submitted electronically with IntegradePro. An Excel database is used to automatically calculate revised grades when new assignments are graded. This information is then imported into IntegradePro.

Moves documents between software applications and platforms. The use of the Microsoft suite of products (Word, Excel, Publisher, Explorer) provides an inherent ability to move and insert files among software applications, and the use of three computer sites (home, teaching school, and university), three electronic mail services, and multiple online research tools creates the need to become proficient in moving documents between computer platforms. The high school server has partitioned "Handin" and "Handout" folders, which I use extensively to electronically handout assignments and reference materials. Students are also required to submit their work using the "Handin" folder, which places a date and time stamp on every student submission. Once submitted, files become "read only," and cannot be deleted or modified by the student. When students are absent on due dates, they submit their assignments to my electronic mail address, contained in a hyperlink on every assignment (see Death Penalty Homework as an example). My personal web site is accessible from remote computers, although, for security reasons, the Handin and Handout folders are only accessible onsite.
