These are exactly the same digest, just sent out at different times. They have the same Message-id header. If you have been receiving more than one copy of your digest, please let me know at gaunt@genealogy.org. I believe these problems (dropped packets in particular) are impacting messages sent from digest lists in particular, as these are larger. (I'm hazy on exactly how messages are sent once they are in the queue to go out, but I do know that they are sent in packets of a set size, and that if a packet is dropped, the other computer responds with a "nak", meaning "I didn't get that, please resend", so the sender resends. It is Global Center that is doing the resending, I believe.) For the Campbell digest, I'd tried cutting the digest size in half. This appears to have worked for a few, but others are still getting multiples. :-( If this is happening to you, and it is bothersome, my only suggestion at this point is to unsubscribe from the digest and subscribe to the regular list. Like all ISPs, zNET pays a "backbone provider" for their connectivity to the Net. But Global Center, one of zNET's backbones, has reached capacity on routers coming into zNET and, thus, into Genealogy Online. The result is dropped packets and slow access. Both myself and zNET have been in regular contact with Global Center. They acknowledge the problem and say that they are installing new equipment and moving much of the traffic off the affected routers. But they've been saying this for a week. Finally, yesterday, someone at GC admitted to me that they need to install new circuits, that those circuits have been ordered but that it may be a month before that's done. zNET is actively searching for a new backbone provider. But that requires the installation of a new circuit and may take another 2-4 weeks. The problem you may be experiencing with slow access and downloads will be fixed once that change occurs, or once Global Center fixes the problem. Please understand that zNET's and Genealogy Online's equipment, all of which is on this side of the bad GC routers, is running as well as it ever has. (Indeed, a San Jose zNET user would have no problem at all accessing GO, since s/he is on this side of Global Center.) Additionally, last Sunday, I added a faster processor, installed a new motherboard and more memory on the web server, hoping that would improve access. Apparently, it has not. Unfortunately, there's not much more that can be done but to "tough it out." -- Michael Cooley, System Administrator Genealogy Online http://www.genealogy.org/ -------------------------------- End of btrvetc-d Digest V99 Issue #8 ************************************
