I have an experinence that could help someone, too. One of my ancestors, Kesiah Portis married Capt. Richard Ransom (1752-1827)of VA>TN ....I had an AWFUL time finding her family. I suspected her father's name was JOHN (big help) and they were from Halifax NC. Never could seem to connect her to parents.....no will for JOHN could be found. BUT FINALLY we discovered a lawsuit RE: the will of John Portis which had been hidden by some of the family from the others....i.e. The WILL was recorded in Halifax Co.COURT RECORDS and all the children were named......How about that?? Maybe you very experienced people knew about that little possiblity...I did not...at the time. Carole ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1998 20:10:31 -0400 From: "Eunice B. Watch Out for Halbert! Halbert's of Bath, Ohio, has come up with a new technique. They are now sending their advertisement for Family History Books from a Washington D.C. address. Halbert's is now using the name "US Information Burueau NUMA" (note the spelling of Bureau) 3220 N. St, NW Ste 1400 Washington D.C. (no zip code given) They are advertising a book regarding all the people with your surname in the Civil War. Do not be fooled. This is the same game, different cover. >From the Wake County Genealogical Society Fall 1998 and the Durham-Orange Genealogical Society Fall 1998 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 08:44:33 +0000 From: pat125@erols.com To: BTRVETC-L@genealogy.org Subject: TURNER Message-ID: <3632E4F0.7E04@erols.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I am looking for information about my great grandmother. I just found out last month that I too have a Turner connection. What I know: GRACE MYRTLE TURNER married TRUMAN EDWARD UPHOLE on 12-4-1893 in Oakland area, Garrett County Maryland. Truman was 21 and Grace 17 at the time of their marriage. Possible connection to the Turner family listed in the 1880 census for Frederick County Maryland. J. H. Turner b. abt. 1842 Josephine (?maiden name)b. abt. 1846 Lenore Turner b. abt. 1870 Frank Turner b. abt. 1872 Grace Turner b. abt. 1876 (Birth state for some of this family may be Virginia) The family listed in the census is just a calculated guess as this is the only listing for a Grace Turner born on a date matching my Grace Turner. (Variations on the Uphole name, Upole, Uphole, Uphold) It is sometimes difficult to follow families in this area as new counties were being set up and listings for Virginia could now be West Virginia. Many thanks for this assistance in my search. The piece said that he had a good friend named (something) Burnett. My husband can not remember the first name of Mr. Burnett. This is unfortunate do to Burnett is my mother-in-law's maiden name and we just started researching it about a month ago. We just spent a few hours at the National Miliatry Park of The Battle of Horseshoe Bend, as a lot of our people are from that area. Do you happen to have anything on any Burnet/Burnett/Burnette there?
