Thanks so much for bringing the BURNETTS back to the list. Good to see the name again after lots of good TURNER, etc. info that we hate to interrupt with a BURNETT query....especially since we could be related.... I have looked in my Vol. 1 of Jean Bork's book, THE BURNETTS AND THEIR CONNECTIONS and I can't seem to find your THOMAS BURNETT. She doesn't have a PARKS in the index, so I had to look at the THOMAS BURNETTS by date alone....and all the Thomases I can find (anywhere near 1812)are in VA. or MO. This sounds like a job for JEAN herself. Why not ask her? In the meantime, as I look at the Tennessee map and I see that Wilson County is very near Williamson County where my BURNETTS settled. You said they moved west to ANOTHER Williamson County....Illinois. Is that a coincidence? Must be...Anyhow, have you tried searching Tennessee GenWeb? They have it divided by counties. Wish I could help more. BTW...my BURNETTS (pronounced Burn-it in the old days in Tennessee...and apparently also in Scotland) don't seem to be connected to Kevin's either....at least not in Tennessee. If you go far enough back we could ALL be connected. The first one of my line to move into Tn. from Va. was TALIAFERRO BURNETT b.1767 Dinwiddie Co. Va., d. 1822 Williamson Co., TN. m. MARY BAUGH (1760-1856) dau of DANIEL BAUGH (1740-1816) of Va and Ga and ELIZABETH CLARK of Dinwiddie Co. Va. Here's hoping you will find lots of connections here... Caroline Burnett Cook In a message dated 98-03-11 12:29:59 EST, you write: << I am looking for the parents of Thomas Burnett b. abt. 1812 in Wilson County Tennessee. He married Nancy Caroline Parks on December 24, 1841. His children are: George M. b. 1843 John H. b Sept 19, 1844 (my gg-grandfather) Felix M. b 1847 (I think he went by Milo) Leander W. b. 1850 Eliza J. b. 1848-1853 (conflicting info from two census reports) William F. b 1858 Sarah b. 1862 The LDS CD's listed three more children but I have not found any other information to confirm that these were also children of Thomas and Nancy. They are: Lewis C. b. 1856 Fred b. 1866 Olive b. 1863 Thomas's wife Nancy and all of his children were born in Marion, Illinois in Williamson County. At first I thought that this Thomas was the brother of Peter Hardeman Burnett, but when I read a compilation that had Kevin's descendant's I realized it could not be the same. There is one compilation, number 215, that lists Thomas, his wife and children from a census report, but that is the only reference through all the compilations that I could find. Anyone that has any information at all, I would love to hear from you. Thank you so much for this newsletter. I wish all the names I were researching had something like this. I clicked my "reply to" button and it put in this address: jbbork@ix.netcom.com. Caroline gave me another address and that also bounced back. So I will try to send it as a group message and see what happens. Here is the previous letter I wrote you: Hi June, I seem to have really run into a stumbling block here. I found Thomas Burnett on an 1870 Williamson County, Illinois census that reported him as being 58 years old. When I did the subtraction this gave me the birth year of 1812. Then in compilation 215 there was a listing of an 1860 census for Williamson County, Illinois that said Thomas Burnett was 45 years old. When I did that subtraction, that gave me an 1815 birth year. There was a name and address on the compilation to write to for more information. I have written and I am anxiously checking my mail box every day. In the mean time poor Thomas is parentless. Both of the census say he was born in Tennessee and I got Wilson County from the IGI CD's at my library. Other than that I am at a loss for finding his parents. Thank you for checking your information for me. Anne Burnett Hatter jbbork@ix.netcom.com wrote: > > Anne, there was only one Burnett on 1812 Wilson Co, TN Tax list and that > was George Burnett. We all have that problem. We say: born about 1812/15. Remember our ancestors were mostly farmers, worked from early til late and most did not keep family records. They knew approximately how old they were and thats about it. We are lucky to find a cemetery or Bible record with a more accurate date, but they are not always right either. You might want to check the county where you first found him and then see if that county has a tax list. He will appear on a list at age 16, sometimes under his father. This will be your most accurate record for age. There is a THOMAS H. BURNETT on the 1850 Census of Williamson Co, TN, p.225. I do not have that record. LEWIS C. Burnett and see if anyone recognizes any of the names. There is a mistake in naming John Herman as the son of John Houston. His son's name was Otis Herman and he went by the name Herman. I typed it exactly as it appeared. Anne Marion Evening Post Williamson County's Oldest And Most Reliable Daily Marion, Ill., Friday, July 13, 1934 JOHN H. BURNETT PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT AT BENTON __________________________ Pioneer Resident, Banker, Educator, Stockman, Farmer, Politician, Churchman, Civil War Veteran, Succombs __________________________ Death at 12:35 A.M. Friday, July 13, ended a long and useful career of one of Marion's pioneer and most prominent citizens, John Houston Burnett, of 210 West Boulevard. Death came very quietly and almost unexpectedly just past midnight in Dr. Moore's hospital in Benton where he had been a patient since the morning of June 22, after a fall which he had sustained about two o'clock that morning in which his right hip was broken. Mr. Burnett's condition had appeared to be better and his daughters who had been here since the day following the accident, had returned to their homes only this week. He had gone to sleep at bedtime and never awakened again--just slept on to the end. He had reached the ripe age of 89 years, ten months and fourteen days. Mr. Burnett was a native of Williamson County, both his father and his mother having been pioneers to this county. He was born east of Crab Orchard, September, 19, 1844, to Thomas and Nancy Parks Burnett, one of six children of whom only the sister, Mrs R. O. Corley of Marion, Route 3, now survives, four brothers, George, Milo, Leander, and William F., together with the parents having preceded him in death. He was educated in rural schools of that community and at the Southern Illinois Normal at Carbondale, and himself became a school teacher. He was also identified with his father and brothers in farming and stockraising and the exporting of tobacco--the large Burnett farm and tobacco barn of the Burnett's just east of Crab Orchard, being the largest on in the county forty years or so ago. March 21, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Davis, also a member of one of the county's pioneer families, whose father owned the first hotel in the county located where the Electric Bakery now stands. To this union were born seven daughters and one son, namely: Mrs. Cordelia Capron and Mrs. Eliza Spiller, both of Marion; John Herman, who died about thirty years ago while serving in the Illinois Senate, and Minnie, also deceased; Mrs. Lillian Lackey of Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. Amy Mcintosh of Webster Groves, Mo., Mrs. Estelle B. Colp, and Mrs. Bertha B Cline, both of Marion. Mr. Burnett was a Civil War veteran, having served as a member of Co. F. 145th Reg., Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was a Republican in politics and for many years was very active in political circles. In 1886 he was elected sheriff of Williamson county and filled that office with dignity and efficiency. He served six years as internal revenue inspector with headquarters in Cincinnati, having been appointed to this post by President William B. McKinley. He was twice mayor of Marion having been elected first in 1895, and served two years and again in 1911, for another two years term. It was while he was mayor that the first concrete sidewalks were built in Marion when the property owners paid for the entire improvement and he once told The Post reporter many interesting incident in connection with that and public improvements made during his terms as mayor. It was during Mr. Burnett's last term as mayor that the first committee was named to work out the policy of establishing a public library here in Marion. There had been some discussion concerning the movement earlier, but official sanction was first given by Mayor Burnett and the ordinance adopted in June 1912. He early became interested in banking here in Marion and with Henry Goddard purchased the Exchange Bank from L. A. Goddard, which was sold on January 1, 1891, to the men who formed the First National Bank. About the same time--1889 he purchased a third interest in the bank which in 1902 became the Marion State and Savings Bank and he has since been a director and stockholder therein and was its president at the time of its closing four years ago last April. Mr. Burnett was an active member of, the First Baptist church of this city and served as a deacon in the church for years. He was a regular attendant upon the morning preaching service and his presence there will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the church with the pastor, Rev. R. W. Wallis, officiating. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery in the Burnett family burying plot beside the body of Mrs. Burnett who preceded her husband in death on January 11, 1923. -------------------------------- End of btrvetc-d Digest V98 Issue #15 *************************************
