Though my BURNETT in the same generation was RICHARD BURNETT, the son of JOSEPH BURNETT and CLARA GATEWOOD. We have had two more JOSEPH BURNETTS since then, but all are the wrong timing for the Revolution. If you find out about your BURNETT please check on RICHARD too (b 1732 Essex Co Va) My DAR patriots index does not list either of them....but they don't have everyone who served...and everyone in the book, for that matter, was not a military person, which is why they call it the PATRIOTS INDEX. My Burnetts eventually settled in Rutheford and Maury County, TN but they had cousins in Knoxville. Let me hear from you if you find something, and I will do the same for you. OH btw my other two JOSEPHS were COL JOSEPH BOLING BURNETT (MEX WAR, one of the first Tennessee Volunteers) and my grandfather, JOSEPH LEE BURNETT (1872-1934) Good hunting, Carole n a message dated 1/29/00 12:04:02 PM Eastern Standard Time, Dojohn99@aol.com writes: << oseph Burnett, b. 1743 VA > TN Date: 1/29/00 12:04:02 PM Eastern Standard Time From: Dojohn99@aol.com Reply-to: btrvetc-l@genealogy.org (BTRVETC-L) To: btrvetc-l@genealogy.org Joseph Burnett, b. ca 1742 in Virginia, d. 1813 in Knox Co., TN, was the GGrandson of John "The Merchant" Burnett and was of the right age to have been involved in the American Revolutionary War. Does anybody have any info on him concerning that? He is my wife's GGG Grandfather and is in June Bork's wonderful book, "The Burnetts and Their Connections," but I didn't record the details and can't recall if there were any Rev War connections. Will appreciate any help, and as always, will be glad to share what I have. Yes, you and my wife are cousins, and although I can't recall the exact connections right now, I remember looking it up once before. The June Bork book goes down to her GGGrandfather, William M. Burnett, who was born in 1814 on Mill Shoal Creek, in Knox County. That creek is within Knoxville now, and somewhere along the line the name was changed to Burnett Creek. Found it on the map but didn't know the significance until this past summer, after we visited in Knoxville, and a cemetery historian told me about it. Not sure when I'll get a chance to get back to our central library to look at that book again, but maybe something will show up there, now that I'll have something specific to be looking for. Many thanks for your response. Thomas (T. J.) Jefferson Turner (8 Jan 1859 - 23 Jan 1950) and his wife Susanna (Susie) M. Nolen are buried in the Jeremiah Turner Family Cemetery. "I also have his mother's mother, Judith Ann (Judy) Elizabeth Turner" No, TJ Turner's Mother's (Martha Jane Turner) mother was Judith Burnett who m. Shadrack Turner, Jr.). Now as for Grandma Judy, first her name is Judith Ann Turner. She does not have Elizabeth in her name. She is my great grandmother on my father's side. I am named after her and my maiden name is Ann Turner Nolen. She spent 6 weeks with at my parents home just after I was born.I later knew her through occasional visits as I was growing up. Grandma Judy's parents were Jefferson Turner and Susan C. Short. Susan's mother was Judith Thomas. Judith Ann Turner and Isaac Alexander (Alex) Nolen are buried side by side in the Nolen cemetery. Alex fought in the Civil War and the Confederate flag is on his tombstone. I have been to this cemetery and have photos of several of the tombstones there. Judy and Alex had ten children--six sons, Samuel, Isaac (my grandfather), Charles, Posey, George, & John. I am looking for a Benjamin Franklin Burnett, born on October 12, 1843 in Tennessee. Some records indicate that he was born in 1836 and in Kentucky, but according to Massac County, Illinios Early Marriages he was 37, with the marrige taking place on August 21, 1881 to Margaret E. Oliver and his birthplace in Kentucky. On Record at the court house in Massac it states that he was 73 years, 1 month, 12 days when he died on November 24, 1909, and birthplace was Tennessee, so you can see how confusing all this is. It also states that his Parents were : Agus Burnett and Nancy Kuykendall, from the marriage record, and that it was his 3rd marriage. He is listed in the 1870 and 1880 Massac Census, In 1870 he has a wife named Mary (Donald or Donnell) and no wife in 1880. If anyone can tell me which way to go I would apperciate it very much. I don't know if Mary was his first or second wife. Charles Thomas, Sr., then would have been the administrator of the estate of Robert SHARP, deceased, since the adminstration was "granted to the Sheriff" on 16 May 1816. (PCVA Order Book 2) Robert SHARP actually died in October 1814. On 26 Jan. 1815, his widow Philipena was granted the right to administer "specially and alone for the collection of his pay as a soldier lately in service at Norfolk." (PCVA Order Book 2) Would this have been a normal way of administering an estate? Robert's only son, Samuel, was only ten years old at the time of his father's death, but the two grandfathers were still alive, and several SHELTON uncles who might have joined their sister, Philipena, in the administration. Perhaps the Sheriff was chosen as a neutral administrator. The estate was sued at least once, by a William N. SHARP, whose relationship to Robert SHARP is unknown (at least to me!). I'd be interested in any speculations. Mary C. Have this book for sale on Ebay, Item #248239423. June Bork http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=248239423 HANOVER COUNTY TAXPAYERS - Saint Paul's Parish 1782-1815. A Register of Taxpayers, with Legends, together with Individual Lists and Descriptions of their Assessable Personal Property. Compiled and Published by William Ronald Cocke, III from the Original Commissioners' Lists preserved in the Archives Division Virginia State Library, 1956. Hardbound, 158 pages including index, 8 " x 11". Several pages have underlining in ink and red high-lighter. White-out used on several under-lines. Hanover County is one of the "burned-counties" and this is such a rare and important book, it should not interfere with researching in this area of Virginia. * The first tax assessment under the Commonwealth was made in 1782 when a poll tax was imposed on all free males "above the age of 21," and a personal property tax on the number of studs (and jacks), riding vehicles, slaves of all ages, horses 9mares, colts and mules and cattle * In 1787 free males "16 to 21" (minors) were added, but in 1805, this group was absorbed as "adults" under the heading "16 and over" * From 1788 to 1815 cattle were excluded. A change of significance during this period was the division of slaves into two groups, those "12 to 16" and "16 and over." In 1815 those "9 to 12" were included in the enumeration. Only the total of all taxable slaves was used here * Licenses were imposed on physicians and surgeons, lawyers according to the court of practice, merchants, operators of public ordinaries, houses of private entertainment, etc. * The superimposed facsimile signatures were taken from the legislative Petitions referred to on page 152 et seq. Signers are indicated by the term "Petitioner" in line with the year of the petition cited. Besides this there were many other petitions of other years. In the petitions of 1790 for or against the division of the county, it was observed that some persons signed both - for and against! These signatures are presented in this volume through the assistance and advice of Mr. Charles P. Juroe, distinguished calligrapher of Richmond. ______________________ -------------------------------- End of btrvetc-d Digest V00 Issue #5 ************************************
