Compilation #99 will be part 1 of a 12-part series from David Jones. David has added new information to his database, which he will be sharing with us. Be sure to let David or me know if you have additional information on any of the descendants mentioned in the next 12 compilations. Thank you, David. Nyla =================================================================== From: MDNolen@aol.com Date: Thu, 3 Apr 1997 10:42:34 -0500 (EST) To: ncreed@pop.erols.com Nyla, I have been reading many of your wonderful pieces on the Turner family. I am related to the Turners. Can you provide me with similar info on the Nolens of the Patrick County and Floyd County Va area, specifically ancestors of or descendents of John Nolen (1770-1855), one of the original settlers of the area. Also any info on the Altizers of Floyd County (my mothers family) would be appreciated. Thanks. Darrell Nolen, 4636 Truman Lane Va Beach, Va 23455 md nolen@aol.com --------------------- Forwarded message: To: MDNolen@aol.com Date: 97-04-03 08:53:34 EST Subject: Turner Geneology This note is intended to answer David Jones' question on the name of the husband of Mary Ann Turner. I would attach this info to the extensive group of files on Turner-Via-Burnett geneology I found on the Internet last added to by Nyla Creed DePauk on 24 Dec 1995, but as I am a novice at this, I don't know how to do it. If any of you like, please feel free to publish this on the Internet. The NOLEN family (of which I am a part) have a very strong connection with the Turners-my family records detail many marriages among the two families. I can trace my ancestry back patrilineally to 1770 (John Nolen); the Nolens have been centered since that time in the Elamsville area of Patrick County VA and Floyd County. We have an annual family reunion, usually in June either in Floyd or in Roanoke. Mary Ann Turner (born about 1815, the daughter of Shadrack Turner II and Judith Burnett) married Alexander Nolen (born 1810). They had at least one child (Charles N. Nolen, who married Lucinda Thomas). Charles and Lucinda had the following children (William T., Mary Ann, Sarah, John A., Thomas S., George, and Cinderella). Alexander Nolen (born 1810), the husband of Mary Ann Turner, was the son of John Nolen (1770-1855) and Mary "Polly" Thomas, who was the daughter of Charles Thomas and Judith Patterson. John Nolen was my great-great-great-grandfather. Interestingly, Polly Thomas' brother Joseph Thomas (1772-1855) married an "Ann Turner" (not further identified). Alexander Nolen's brothers and sisters were: (1) Charles P. Nolen (1 Mar 1806-26 Jan 1875)--my great-great grandfather, whose son Issac Alexander Nolen (11 Sept 1840-21 Feb 1923), a Civil War soldier, married Judith A. Turner (22 Mar 1857-25 Sept 1960), who told me stories of her life as a child in the Civil War. Her parents were Jefferson Turner (a Civil War soldier) and Susan Short. Both Judith and Susan were remarkable women. "Aunt Judy" lived to be 103. Susan drove a wagon from Elamsville to Abington VA to retrieve the body of her in 1861. We can trace the Shorts back to 1613 (in England), and a branch of that family by marriage back to an English baronet nmaed Sir William Skipwith, whos grandson Young Short married a French Hugenot woman in Feb 1756 (Marie, or Mary, Billiebo). (2) Pleasant "Rusty" Nolen (1799-?); (3) Lucinda Nolen (1810-?), who married Samuel Rakes; (4) Judith Nolen (1804-?); (5) and Wilson "Witt" Nolen (1812-?). I also have a Turner connection through my grandmother Loula Sedina Nolen Nolen (1881-1958), who was the daughter of an Alexander Nolen (not the same Alexander as the one married to Mary Ann Turner, born 1810) and Serapta Turner. Serapta was the daughter of Charles Turner (1817-1857) and Violet Hall (whose father was Thomas Hall). Charles Turner was the son of Francis Turner (1789-1880) and Nancy Thomas (they had 7 sons and 5 daughters). Francis Turner was the son of James Turner and Mary ?. They had 7 children (Francis, Mary, Adam, Richard, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Sallie). Most of my info comes from a book titled "Floyd County-A History of Its People and Places" by Dr Amos D. Wood, published in 1981 and again in 1986 by Southern Printing Company, 501 Industrial Park, Blacksburg, VA. 24060. It has about 300 pages of geneological records, including 8 pages exclusively on the Turners. The Turners are mentioned in many other parts of the book in relation to marriages into other families. Any info that the group might have on the Nolens in the early 1800s-late 1700s would be greatly appreciated. M. Darrell Nolen 4636 Truman Lane Va. The Land of the Leys. A Susan Burnett from Kenmay has written a book, "Without FanFare". On Page 92 in the Book she shows how her Family is related to the Burnetts of the Land of the Leys. She shows Alexander Burnett's youngest son being John Burnett and that he came to America. The dates fit John Burntt of 1611, that came to America in 1635. Turner" <72650.74@CompuServe.COM> To: Nyla Creed Subject: Smith Turner, 1750, VA Hi Nyla, Could someone help me out with this problem? I am looking for information on Smith Turner, born in Virginia in about 1750. He served in the Revolutionary War and may have been at Valley Forge with General Washington. He married someone named Pruett, although he may have been married more than one time. In about 1800, he left Virginia and went west to Ohio and Indiana. Does anyone know in which county or region he lived and to which other Turners he is related? Also, his name may have been Henry Smith Turner, although he used "Smith Turner" on the Census records. The "Turner Papers" are available by ordering from Delaware Public Archives, Hall of Records, Dover, DE 19901 They are on Microfiche and there is a lot of information there. The Joseph Brown Turner Collection has many family lines of Turners in it. Some date back to 1600. I had been looking for this work the first time I emailed you. The cost of the fiche was $5.00. Well worth twice the price. Hope this will help a lot of you Turners. I am still looking for John Turner born about 1800 in GA. Married Elizabeth ? who was born in NC. John's parents were from Virginia. Happy hunting all, and hope this information will help many of you. Penny Menges Rodighiero pennym@bmi.net ========================================================== Hi Again Nyla, This all shows the family lines and birth dates and marriages and the notes made from the research material. There are also some legaldocuments copied on there also. It has information I have seen on certain lines that are on the compilation and do tie in. I really read these very carefully. There are several different lines that are researched there on the Geo Turner collection and maybe I can pick one of them and relate it by email to you for the compilation. Penny ====================================================== Penny, Thanks for the quick response. If you would do that, there would be a lot of happy cousins. Thanks.
