We certainly reached our goal. A big "Thank You" to Everyone. It's been a week since the last compilation. Although this is a short one, I wanted to send this to everyone rather than wait for more eMails. Seasons Greetings to All. Hope you have a Merry Christmas and may the New Year bring good health, good friends, and prosperity to you and your family. Please continue to share your family information. [mailto:sciotopublishing@usa.net] [http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/1943] To: Nyla Creed DePauk Subject: Fifth Cousins Once Removed? Not quite... Hi Nyla: Just waded through Comp 79, and will have to go back through it again, since Shadrach Turner's mentioned (one of the connections to my GOODEs), but I saw this note and thought I'd add my $.02 worth: ================================================== EVELYN: Based on my calculations, we are 5th cousins. That's pretty close kin. Is this how you calcuate it? You and my children would be 5th cousins, once removed? NYLA ==================================================== Relationship between Nyla & Evelyn Shadrack Turner Shadrack Turner William Turner William Turner Rev. John Turner brothers George Wilson Turner John Burnett Turner, Sr. 1st C Elizabeth Turner Mary Jane (Turner) Dickens 2nd C Martha Jane (Turner) King Leota (Dickens) Williams 3rd C George Whitfield Turner, Sr. Wilda (Williams) Creed 4th C George Whitfield Turner, Jr. Nyla Creed DePauk 5th C Evelyn Beryl(Turner) Alexander ============================================================ "You and my children would be 5th cousins, once removed?" No, not quite. Your children and her children would be 6th cousins; however, YOU and her children (or your children and Evelyn) would be 5th cousins, once removed (one generation displaced from the common connection). Anytime there's a displacement by a generation (or more) is where the "X removed" comes in. So, for example: Tom Bill <- brothers with common ancestry Mary Jane <- 1st cousins Daniel William <- 2nd cousins John <- relationship to above? But how does John fit into the picture? He's Bill's 3rd nephew, Jane's 1st cousin twice removed (because there is a 2-generation difference between himself and Jane), 2nd cousin once removed to William (since there's only ONE generational level difference between John & Wm), and thus, if William had children, they would be John's 3rd cousin(s). The same formula works for *any* generation working in *any* direction. The only key to the great mystery of "X removed" is knowing where the common generations are, and how far away (# of generations) you are from the most common connection point. Clear as mud?!? :) Really, it's an easy system that's been misconstrued a long way from its original intent! Hope this clears some of that mystery up, and if I haven't elucidated very well here, please let me know and I'll send the full report on this! [Didn't want to choke the lines, in case someone else beat me to the punch on this. Overkill has its merits, but I think this might be the exception here!] Let me know how I can help more. Thanks! But I still stand behind my comment. Here it is again: >EVELYN: Based on my calculations, we are 5th cousins. That's >pretty close kin. Is this how you calcuate it? You and my >children would be 5th cousins, once removed? NYLA Since I didn't know if Evelyn had children, I didn't mention her children. However, if I had said "Your children and my children", 6th cousins would be correct. Yes, I do have the children, etc. but have not been able to locate any siblings for him. There is a good possibility that he came from MA and is a desc. of Humphrey Turner. In the Humphrey Turner line of desc. two of his sons desc. carried the name Elisha Turner from one gen. to the next, thus, it makes it very confusing to track. Will get it together and post it. Have you considered that instead of the compilations? Might be easier for you ... not sure. Maybe others would help with the administration... Gary ========================================================== GARY: I have no knowledge of Maiser lists. Perhaps Chris can answer your questions.
