Date: 96-02-24 01:16:02 EST From: waddiesalmon@usa.pipeline.com (WADDIE SALMON) To: ncreed@aol.com Let me give you a quick run down on a GOLD MINE of information that I found this past Tuesday. Went to Bedford and was going to the courthouse. A tiny museum is on the opposite corner. All the years of going to Bedford I had never been inside the museum but this time I decided to look. Well, that tok all of 20 minutes. Talking to one of the ladies there, she during our conversation learned that I was in Bedford to do research. She said, "We have research material here if you would like to look". Well, to make a long story short, this little tiny place has more reference books and material than any place I have ever seen. It was TOTALLY amazing!!! If you are researching anyone, anywhere in Virginia, you may do well to contact the Bedford Museum, Bedford, Virginia. Sorry I don't have the number but will get it. They will do a bit of research for you if you can give them as much detail as possible. You may be surprised as to what they are able to find. They are VERY knowlagable about research. A couple of people there are walking referance books. It would be advisable to donate as much as you can to them as they run this place with VERY little money. $1.00 admission fee to tour or do research. They are wonderful and the volunteers work very hard to help everyone as much as possible. Please try to send them something. Oh yeah! Almost forgot. I remember seeing a couple of reference books on Turner Family. One is The Turner Family and Their Connections. The man who wrote the book is there almost everyday, I think. Give them a try. They are wonderful!!! Waddie "Fish" Salmon BM1 - USN - Ret. My problem is Harriet A. Callahan (Burnett?) Loyd Born Dec. 31, 1833 Died Feb 15, 1905 her children are: Joseph D. Burnett B: June 1854 Dollie Ann Burnett B: Sept 1863 George Gilbert Burnett B: May 5, 1859 Madison Dillard Burnett, B: April 3, 1862 William Riley Burnett B: May 20, 1867 My great grandfather is William Riley Burnett, we have his birthplace as Lunenburg Co., Va but I understand that Bedford was once part of Lunenburg. I live in Bedford, Va. We have been unable to trace the Burnett line further because be are unsure of the father of Harriet's children, in various documents the children listed their father as Lee, Lazerus L., and Elisha Lee Burnett. We have not found any record of Harriet being married to a Burnett. In the `1860 census Harriet is shown living in the household of Lazarus and Elizabeth Susan Burnett. In the 1870 census she is shown as Harriet Callahan, head of household with all 5 children having the last name of Callahan. Harriet married Levi Loyd and after that time all 5 children appear as Burnett's. Any ideas? Thanks for your help. The way it works is I compile all the eMails I receive from folks looking for these family names or other families in the Patrick-Henry-Franklin-etc area of VA. When I get several pages, I mail the compilation to everyone on the list. If that sounds like something that you'd like to join, just let me know and I'll send everyone the eMail you sent me once I get several more queries. I don't edit, correct, change the info folks submit. Sometimes I make a comment, but it is obvious that it is a comment since I type it in all CAPS in brackets. I wrote to Allison, the one you showed in the address, and she told me she was forwarding my letter to you. So that is why you got it. I'm thrilled to find anyone that might have some help for me at last! My William S. Turner I'm trying to find info about said he was related to James Turner the governor of NC whose family came from Virginia- his father Thomas Turner Esq. from Southhampton Co. Virginia to Bute later Warren Co. NC. So I guess that my William's family also came from Virginia. So any Turners from Va that might sound like mine I'm sure interested in. In the Atascosa County history book (A. county is where my Turners settled in Tex) is an article on my Turners that says William S. Turner said he was cousins with James Turner the governor of NC. Just a few days ago my sister found this statement in a book called Texas Indian Fighters by Andrew Jackson Sowell -the author says his mother was Mary Turner daughter of William S. Turner and that his mother's grgrandfather was James Turner the govenror of NC. I have no idea which statement is true. I don't think James is old enough to be William's grandfather but now I really want to know his family line. I know he had three wives but I don't have his children's names. If you have this James line somewhere or I can ask if anyone has it that would be great. Let me look in my files and get his wives names and dates and paste it here. Be back in one minute. :) Here we go - Date: Mon, 19 Feb 1996 07:50:14 -0500 From: johnt@fhouse.org Subject: Turner family To: pat-chesney@easy.com Hello again, Well I found another William, This is William Suddarth Turner married Elizabeth P. Smith and moved to Texas His father was John Turner Born in Virginia and died prior to 1820 and John father was Terisha Turner born 1705 probably England settled in Amherst County, Virginia and married Sarah Wimpy. I did find the Gov. James Turner he had three wifes Polly Anderson (2)Ann Cochran and (3)Elizabeth Johnston. The Book I am using is A History of the Turner Family by William A. Roskey - American genealogical Research institute, Washington D.C. James was from the Mass. Line of Turner and that is where you find the Brewsters. Humphrey was married to Lydia Gamer and they had 8 Children. John Turner Sr. Married Mary Brewster on 12 Nov 1645. And they had 15 Children. Hope this is of some help. John Turner *** The Fire House Inn *** Come visit us Telnet: fhouse.org WWW: fhouse.org *********** I'm going to write John and see if he has the children of James in his book. Also my sister found these following statements in that book by Andrew Jackson Sowell. Terri, as I was reading about A.J. Sowell's family I discovered our connection. His mother was Mary Turner, which makes us related to the Sowell's as distant cousins I guess. He states on page 794 of Texas Indian Fighters that Mary was born in Tenn. and was the daughter of Maj. William S. Turner who served in the war w/ the Creek Indians, and the battles of Talladega, Tallahassee, Horseshoe, and New Orleans. His wife was Elizabeth Smith, and among her people were noted lawyers and doctor; of the former was Calvin Smith and the latter Dr. Goodlow Smith. Of the Turners were also noted lawyers, one of these being Jack Turner of Nashville, Tenn. He says Mary had a sister named Lucinda. He says they came to Tx. in 1840. My mother's great-grandfather(author talking), James Turner, was Governor of No. Carolina in the early days, and one of her ancestors, John Turner, came over to America in the Mayflower. The author is Andrew Jackson Sowell, and said that his family were very good friends of the Jacksons, and thus he was named after him. On page 791 the author tells of how he came about his name. My father, Asa J.L. Sowell, was born in Davidson Co., Tenn. in 1821, near the home of Gen. Jackson called "The Hermitage." Also four of my uncles were born there- Andrew Jackson, William, Lewis, and John. Andrew was the oldest and was named by the wife of Gen. Jackson after her distinguished husband, who was a warm friend of our family. This is where we get the family name of Andrew Jackson. I was named for my uncle and have nephews named after me. The names Calvin Smith, Goodlow Smith and Jack Turner of Nashville, Tenn were never known by us before Jeanne found this. Wondering if they are direct ancestor names. The Sowells and Turners settled together in 1840 in a pioneer area later named Seguin, Tx. Asa Sowell and Calvin Turner were Texas Rangers together and served under Jack Hays the famous leader of the Tex Rangers. Jack Hays was related to Andrew Jackson and lived near the Hermitage until his parents died and he was taken to live with an uncle but when a young teenager left that home and ended up in Texas right after the Alamo. So bunch of these Tx rangers had ties back to Tenn and even further back to Carolinas and Virginia. Andrew Jackson the president sent Sam Houston down to Tx to try and get it into the union and he you know Sam was once governor of Tenn. And before living in Tenn Andrew Jackson was from Waxhaws area in Carolinas, they still can't be sure what side of North and South his home where he was born lay. And he was from Ireland before that which looks like where the Hays were from. So these folks just all kind of hung together! There were many Turners that married into the Mayflower group in the following generations. Maybe if it isn't this particular Turner line it may be another. But that is what I am aiming for - to prove or disprove the family story that they were related to the Mayflower group. Interesting side note - there was a later ship called the Mayflower and a John Turner did arrive on it but it wasn't the original Mayflower ship and it was 8 yrs later! But the statement is true- someone could say their ancestor John Turner came over on the Mayflower - and it not be the John Turner that died that first winter! Thanks for any help! Take care and God bless you! Nyla, Count me in. Appreciate you organizing it. Thanks for the long list of Turner info. I wouldn't be surprised to find a connection but at this point I need more info to make it. And that may be coming. I've written a John Turner who has a Turner book with information in it about James Turner the governor of NC in 1802 etc his family line which I have found my Turners are related to. It is a family that came from Virginia and went to NC then to Tenn. John is copying 20 to 30 pages and sending me since he found references to my line. So I am looking forward to it very much. There was a William Suddarth mentioned in it - so maybe I will find a connection with the Suddarth/Turner intermarriages. That name Suddarth is very unusual name! Thank goodness for unusual names. My maiden name is Smith on my dads side and I have Adams on my mothers sides and Whites on my dads side and more Smiths farther back besides Turners. Takes great skill to research those Smiths! I will check out the homepage you mentioned when we get back later tonight. Thanks again for taking the time and trouble to send me the info. Appreciate it very much! Take care and God bless you!
