PETER HARDEMAN5 BURNETT (GEORGE4, JAMES3, GEORGE2, THOMAS1) was born November 15, 1807 in Nashville, Tennessee, and died May 17, 1895 in San Francisco, California. He married HARRIET B. ROGERS August 20, 1828 in Hardeman County, Tennessee, daughter of Peter Rogers. > >Notes >Peter Hardeman was a lawyer, who was the first elected governor of California. He organized a wagon train to Oregon in 1843, and went to California in 1848. > >>From "Cain-Burnett Kin"--- > > PETER HARDEMAN BURNETT 1807-1895 > Important in California and Oregon history, so much has been written about Peter H. that we hesitate to say much about him. But he is family, and we are concentrating on the family items. > Peter left his family in Mo. in 1826 and returned to Tn. with the Hardemans, settling in Hardeman Co. Here he faced the differences in the life styles of the Burnetts and Hardemans. The Burnetts were hard-working, with few frills. "The Hardemans were generally men of the world, first fond of fashionable pleasures, dress, and show, and afterward seekers of fortune.., good business men... firm in telling the truth. . . They were generally quick-tempered and downright in the expression of their opinions." "Thomas Hardeman, 50, passed down certain maxims to his children: First: Pay your honest debts; Second: Never disgrace the family; Third: Help the honest and industrious kin." (Recollections of an Old Pioneer,pp. 2, 3) > Peter was a clerk in a hotel at $100 a year, and, afterwards, at double the wages, clerk in a store. Here in 1828 he married Harriet B. Rogers. In the spring of 1829 he bought out his employer, but after 3 years of unsuccessful store- keeping, gave up and went back to Mo., settling in Liberty. He left Tn. owing "considerable" money on notes. > Though he had received little schooling, he had read widely, and had made progress in the study of law. But his entrance into the profession was delayed. With his bro Glen Owen Burnett they opened a store in Liberty. Peter also had a store at Barry, operated a saw mill and a distillery, and also was editor of a weekly newspaper "The Far West." > In the fall of 1837 the Burnett Bros. became merchants in Martinsville (which in 1840 became Platte City.) On 25 Mar 1839 the First Circuit Court was held in Platte in a log tavern and Peter was enrolled as an attorney. In the fall of 1839/40 he was appointed District Attorney and remained so until his resignation in 1843. The family had lived in Liberty until 1840 when they moved to Platte City. > Deeply concerned over the continual illness of his wife, and his mounting debts, which had come to $15,000.00, and concerned over the Oregon Question, he consulted his creditors, and received their approval - they "prayed hopefully that he would find improving fortune." So he organized a wagon train and left 22 May 1843 with a party of 800 to 875 persons, men, women and children for Oregon. The Platte City area group met first at Weston where they crossed the Missouri River through Leavenworth, Ks. Like the head waters of a mighty river a number of smaller groups headed out westward, all joining together to form >the wagon train of 873 people. Peter H. was elected Captain but trouble soon arose when those who had no loose cattle objected to doing guard duty to care for them. They formed 2 companies - Jesse Applegate was elected Capt of the "Cow Column", Peter, Captain of the rest. > At that time, Peter was described as 37, tall and spare, with ropy muscles and a grave wit; strong and rugged, of cheerful disposition, with a fondness for >reminiscences and anecdotes. > In Oregon Peter H. helped reorganize the constitution, which was adopted in July 1845. > Gold fever in Ca. led to Peter in Sept 1848 leading a company of 150 men, who cut an overland trail to the mines. He later estimated that at least 2/3 of the male population of Oregon started for the gold fields. In Platte Co., Mo. 3 Feb 1849, 350 emigrants left for California. Paxton said one half never returned, and that half of them did well or died away from home. The other half returned home broken in fortune but satisfied with adventure. > In May 1849 Peter left the mines to become the attorney and general agent of John A. Sutter, Jr. It was here he earned the money to pay off his debts in Tn. & Mo. > When Peter was running for Governor of Ca. he was charged with stumping the gold fields accompanied by his two beautiful daus, running against a bachelor. It was also claimed at the time that he won probably because of the many transplanted Oregonians. His inauguration was 20 Dec 1849. > Enduring a stormy incumbency he resigned his governorship 9 Jan 1851, which the legislature accepted without comment. Variously reported as "tiring of his post"; "Unable to endure criticism"; "His disenchantment with his office grew when he discovered that his $10,000 annual salary, which had seemed so large before his inauguration, was inadequate to cover his expenses. Even the gross figure was an illusion, since he was paid not in gold, but in depreciated state scrip." Finally in 1895, at the point of death, it was reported that he had lost >a large amount of property in a fire in Sacramento in 1851, and he needed to give close attention to his personal affairs. > Peter assumed the practice of law as a member of the firm of Burnett, Ryland, Von Vonhies and Hester, the first law firm established in San Jose. Living for many years in San Jose, he moved to San Francisco in 1863. The Sutter heirs were wrangling over the estate and he was called as a witness. He was suffering severely from Neuralgia at the time and was afraid to brave the cold fogs of San Francisco. To his surprise he found on that trip and others that as soon as he reached the city his neuralgia left him, and that it returned every time he returned to San Jose. > In San Francisco he founded the Pacific Bank, and was president for 16 years. His excuse for retiring was that he feared his forgetfulness would result in some difficulty if he remained. > His final days were headlines in the San Francisco Chronicle. May 15, 1895, p.8. PETER H. BURNETT AT THE POINT OF DEATH. from this - "The patient is not suffering from any disease or organic malady, old age seems to be the principle cause of his present condition. . . In an interview on his 86th birthday he said "My rule is to eat about two-thirds of what my appetite demands, I always go to the table hungry and get up hungry. I think all men of strong condition would live to be eighty years of age," > May 16, 1895, p.5 NO CHANGE IN CONDITION OF DYING MAN > May 17, 1895, p.7. Steadily growing weaker. . .
