This is the line of Thomas Burnett from Scotland down as far as it can be taken, and it includes James Burnett of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, who died there in 1797. > This document includes all of the information in the book "Cain-Burnett Kin" by Eldon and Lauretta Corkill, which was published in 1988. I obtained permission from their son, John R. Corkill, to distribute this information to the members of our group. I was amazed at the depth and thoroughness of the research they did, and have included any sources they quoted. > I cross-checked this information with an extensive amount of courthouse and library information I gathered in Shelby County, Kentucky, in July and August of 1996. I went there with my great-uncle, Milton Earl Burnett, who was born in 1900. I have a picture of him standing next to the gravestone of James C. Burnett and Permelia Shepherd, who were cousins, not in our direct ancestral line, as it turned out. > My family is descended from James Cunningham Burnett through his son Pryor, who was born to J.C.'s first wife, Keziah Pulliam. The line from James Cunningham Burnett on back was provided by "Cain-Burnett Kin." > There may be minor errors in some of the information, but I've checked and rechecked the accuracy, so it shouldn't be more than a typo if you find one. > I encourage anyone who wishes to correspond with me about this information to contact me by phone, e-mail, or letter...please, if you find an error or have anything to add, let me know!!!!! > I've noticed several people have asked about this particular line of Burnett's, besides me...maybe this will satisfy some curiosity. > I was too exhausted to do the comparisons between the compilations and this information, so can you guys help me check it to see if there are any common links between this line and the John Sr. line in Patrick/Henry Counties, Virginia? > Thanks to the group for helping me make these links, and I'm glad to share the results!!!!!! > > Kevin K. CHB says by the 3d generation many had added t or were in documents as Burnett, We use Burnett thruout, except in document listing. > > GEORGE BURNET 1770-1838 > Trying to follow George's movements has been interesting and frustrating. After having supposedly moved his family to Howard Co., Mo. in 1817, he was censused in Davidson Co., Tn. in 1820, with 10 ch. That same year records in Clay Co., Mo. show he was there, but this time evidently alone. Moving such a large family, even by boat, would not have been easy, but his son, Peter Hardeman Burnett in his "Recollections. . ." recalled only the moving to Howard Co. Mo. and then to Clay Co. > To gain an idea of the man and his times we have turned to Peter's "Recollections..." and to Genealogical Notes from the Liberty Tribune. > Peter says "we spent our first winter (in Howard Co., Mo.) on a farm, in a large camp with a dirt floor, boarded up on the sides with clapboards, and covered with the same, leaving a hole in the center of the roof for the escape of the smoke. All of the family lived together in the same room, the whites on one side and the blacks on the other." > They moved from the farm to Franklin, where George carpentered and kept a boarding house, then moved back to the farm. Location of farm in Missouri bottoms being so unhealthy, they moved to Clay Co. in spring of 1822. > While in Liberty, Clay Co. in 1820 George built a two-room house of hand hewn logs, with a half story above. This was used as an Indian Trading Post, and later became the old Chevis Stage Coach inn of pioneer days. A line dividing Missouri and Indian Territory (later Platte Co.) ran through the middle of the house -- an open hallway where the stage coaches were later driven through to unload passengers. Indians crossed the line into the Missouri room and bought liquor. Family history relates that squaws would enter the house, squat in front of the fireplace to warm, then as methodically and deliberately leave without speaking a word. The logs still in fine condition, the structure was moved to the recorrstructed village called MISSOURI TOWN 1855 near Kansas City. >There it is known as the Chevis-Samuel Home, and stands at the entrance, > The logs had six 6 inch square holes cut through, giving a resemblance to a fort. As Indians were numerous when it was built, the holes were said to be protection against them. There was a buffalo wallow near the house and "elephants" were seen and heard to trumpet in a nearby pasture. > George entered a tract of 160 acres, in spring of 1822? at land office at $1.25 per acre. Here they built another house. > GEORGE BURNET died 22 Feb 1838 intestate, (Clay Co., Mo. W.B. A,2 Mar. 1838, Administrator's bond) (printed form). Dr. Glen O. Burnett as principal and Benjamin S.
