Eva Turner Bell told Dorothea Turner Zoller that Tim and Betty were Mary Francis' adoptive parents, and that the Dwyer family came to Texas from Tennessee. Dorothea and I are trying to confirm this. Later, Eva told Aunt Veta that Mary's father was French, and her mother was half white (father) and half Comanche Indian (mother). Mary was their first child, and her mother died in childbirth. Her father found a home for the baby and returned to France. Mary spent at least a part of her life in an orphanage before being adopted by the Dwyers. We notice that in their family Bible, Mary spelled her last name as Dewyers. So, when I received a photocopy of Tim and Betty's marriage certificate from the Falls Co., TX, County Clerk's office, I was surprised to find that Tim's name was spelled Dwyer! Perhaps the official who wrote out the certificate made an error? In an era and place where many were uneducated, it was common for names to change in spelling from generation to generation. However, I have never seen the name Dewyers anywhere else, but Dwyer fairly common among descendants of Irish immigrants. With my research, I am beginning to feel that Tim and Betty were Mary's natural parents. In those days, orphan children were often not officially adopted, rather a family just took them in. They kept their own names. I have not been able to find Tim and Betty in the 1880 census, which they should be, if they were Mary's adoptive parents. A family may have taken her in, and she kept her parents' name. But, not having been taught the proper spelling, she and the adoptive family just spelled it as it sounded, "Dewyers". I am still trying to find a grave for Betty, which should clear things up--if she died very early, then she was Betty's natural mother. In that case, Tim was probably Irish, as Dwyer is an Irish name, and he may well have remarried. I haven't been able to find Tim or Betty in the 1870 census, either, which was taken in March, just before their I did find one Timothy Dwyer in a nearby county, Coryell Co., in the 1880 census (see below). He was 35 (so he would have been 25 at the time of his marriage to Betty 10 years earlier, she was 22 at the time). His wife Vivien was only 23, and they had three children under the age of five! It is very possible that this was Mary's father, and that after placing her in the orphanage, he moved to another county, remarried, and had another family! An interesting point is that Tim was not found in the Coryell Co. census in 1870! 1. Mary Francis Dewyers, "Fannie," born Jan. 15, 1870, in Marlin, Falls Co., TX; died Dec. 12, 1937, in Pomona, CA, of stomach cancer; 67 years old. Mary married William Ellis Turner. Timothy Dwyer, born ca. 1845, in Ireland, died 1903, in Coryell Co., TX; about 58 years old. Both his parents were born in Ireland. Married (Feb 21, 1875, in Coryell Co., TX) E. Black, born ca. 1857, in TX; died 1926, in Coryell Co., TX; about 69 years old. She is named Veria on the 1880 census, and Bina on her grave. Both were first buried in the Sugar Loaf cemetery. When the military took over the area, the graves were disinterred and moved to the nearby Killeen City Cemetery. In the 1880 census, Tim and Bena have three children: 1. John D. Dwyer, born ca. 1876. 2. Mary E. Dwyer, born ca. 1878. 3. William Dwyer, born Jan. 1880. Two more Dwyers were buried near Tim and Bina, both the correct ages to be their children: 4. Bob Dwyer, born 1882, died 1959; 77 years old. 5. Dan Dwyer, born Nov. 8, 1885; died March 2, 1948; 62 years old. FIRST GENERATION (TURNER)-- William Ellis Turner, born Jan. 20, 1852, in KY; died April 10, 1915, of pneumonia, in Amarillo, TX; 63 years old. He was an only child, says Dorothea Zoller, our cousin. Married (Sept. 9, 1885, in Hill Co., TX, marriage license obtained in Hillsboro, in Hill Co., TX) Mary Francis Dewyers, born Jan. 15, 1870, in Marlin, TX; died Dec. 12, 1937, in Pomona, CA, of stomach cancer; 67 years old. William was buried in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo--the epitaph on his grave reads, "Asleep in Jesus, blessed thought." Mary ran a boarding house in Amarillo to help support the family after William died. Mary was buried in Pomona Cemetery. An obituary from the Amarillo Daily News tells that William worked for the Puckett Grain Company, and was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church. His son William's (delayed) birth certificate gives his occupation as farmer. They lived at 1207 Garfield at the time of his death. The city directory for 1915 gives Mary's name as Fannie M. Turner, and gives her occupation as nurse. 1. Thomas Azro Turner, "Tom," born Jan. 6, 1887; died Dec. 22, 1970; 83 years old. Married (Oct. 13, 1907, in Greer Co., OK, at the home of his sister Nora) Essie May Page, born Nov. 4, 1889; died July 1961; 71 years old. They had 13 children. For a time in Idaho, he dealt cards for a living. In 1913 he was a machine helper for the Santa Fe Railroad, and owned the house the family lived in. [PLEASE NOTE. Married (Dec. 17, 1911, in Wheeler, TX) Jewel Elendor Garrison, born Oct. 18, 1891, in Comanche, TX; died Oct. 29, 1980, in Pomona, CA; 89 years old. West is a small town about 20 miles north of Waco. It is a Czech town, and was at one time called West Station because of its position on the railroad. Bill and Uncle Levi travelled around to find work. First they were in Springerville, CA, then the families moved to Armona, El Centro, and finally homesteaded outside of Wilcox, AZ. The homestead was noth of Wilcox, between and a little south of Bonita and Sunset. Elie and Veta were both born on that homestead, but their mailing address changed. While they were there, Bill and Levi continued to travel to find work. When Grandpa Garrison died in 1922, they gave up the homestead because there would be no men around, and it was so far out in the country. From there they moved to Bisby and Globe, AZ, to work in the copper mines. Then they tried farming again in the Wilcox area, but with no luck. In1925 the family moved to Pomona. The old homestead is now part of a cattle ranch. 1. Thomas Kermit Turner, "Kermit," born Sept. 20, 1912, in Armona, CA; died June 4, 1962, of cancer, in Arcadia, CA; 50 years old. Served aboard USS Princeton when it was torpedoed in China Sea in WWII. Married Geneveive, "Jean." Kermit worked for Edison for 21 years [PLEASE NOTE. This will has been copied in a number of Turner publications; it is certainly not hard to find, and I'm sure a lot of the people in this group have a copy of it. I have never seen it questioned in published works, and it's always treated as though it's quite straightforward. I do not find it that way and would like to see if I'm the only one who questions it. The will it quite helpful in that it lists Shadrach's children. Four of them are mentioned in specific Items, as is his wife, Ann. My questions center around the last Item and the PostScript. He says all his movable estate, after the death of his wife, is to be divided among his children and grandaughter, then he lists 9 people. In the list is mentioned two Mary's, one being Mary Hunter, and in fact, we know his daughter Mary married a William Hunter. Who is the other Mary? Here's what we do know: three of his children are married at the time--Elizabeth (Packwood); Mary (Hunter); William (to Jane Hunter). Mary is the only child for whom I have no listed children. Later, she and her sister, Exoney, along with their husbands, migrated to Wayne Co, KY. From there, the two children I know of Exoney's migrated to Louisanna and Missouri. I do not have the names of her other children, although I would like to find them. By the time of Shadrach's death, Elizabeth had 8 children (Packwoods): William, Exony, Elisha, Samuel, Richard, Larkin, Rachel & Sarah (b. 1783). William & Jane Turner had five children by then: George W., James, John, Martha & Elizabeth (b. 1783). So, could the second Mary have been Mary's daughter? In the family group sheets you sent, constructed by Pilson, he mentions that probably Shadrach & Ann had another daughter, in addition to the eight, also married to a Hunter. Exoney later married a Hunter, but Pilson already knows this. Who is this 9th daughter? Does she exist? Obviously, Shadrach had some second thoughts about his will, seems he needed to add some people to it. Who are they? Who is Lucia Robb? Any thoughts? Could Lucia be a nickname of one of the grandchildren and Robb be a middle name? His youngest grandaughter had just been born, and her name was Sarah. Could she be Sally? Each child was mentioned and received part of his estate, but some seem more "equal" than the others? Has anyone uncovered any research to indicate why this is? A lot of questions, I know, with probably no way of knowing what really was happening back there in Henry Co over 200 years ago, but I would love to hear other's opinions. Thanks. The Last Will and Testament of Shadrack Turner In the Name of God Amen. October the 25th One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-Three. I have seen two different parents listed for Constantine Turner of Franklin Co, VA. The only thing for certain, if there is anything certain in genealogy, is that he's a grandson of Shadrach. Now, is he a son of John & Elizabeth Price or Josiah and Millie Key? Different sources say different things. One book, I think it is Dr. Wood,s book on Floyd Co, VA, says that Constantine, as well as Thomas, is the son of Josiah. This book is usually very correct on the Turners, b/c the man who contributed his knowledge of Turners was a Turner cousin and was himself born in 1849. He either knew them or knew of them with only a few years removed. However, the information on the first generation of Turners in Franklin Co tends to be completely wrong, so I don't think he is necessarily a good resource for this first generation. On the other hand, Marvin Raney, author of the Raney collection, and usually quite reliable, says Constantine is the son of John & Elizabeth. If I were to base my conclusions solely on the credibility of these two authors, I would certainly go with Raney. But it's never that easy, is it? There is has been other research done on John & Elizabeth, from very good and reliable researchers, for example, O. E. Pilson, who is probably the most knowledgeable Turner researcher. Constantine is not listed among the children of John & Elizabeth on the Pilson Family Group Sheets. So, who is Constantine's father? The children I have listed for Constantine are (all b. in Franklin Co, VA): With first wife Elizabeth: 1. Mary, b, 1824, m. Elisha (Elijah) Prillaman, b. 1820/21 2. Cynthia, b. 1825 3. Josephine, b. 1827, 1827/28 4. Margaret, b. 1829/30 5. Alfred, b. 1830/31 6. William, b. 1831/32 7. John, b. 1833/34 With second wife, Mary Lavinder, dau John & Mary (Deppity) Lavinder, m 9-24-1838: 1. Pamelia, 1840/41 2. Joseph, b. 1842/43 3. Stephen, b. 1844/45 If anyone knows the parentage of Constantine, or has any thoughts, please let me know. Thank you. Kathe ================================== End.
