So far, I have not found a connection to any of my Turners who migrated to IN in the early 1800s. In case you didn't put that information in the compilation, I am looking for a William Turner (b. @1788, VA) who married Tabitha Pruitt (b. @1788, VA). A William Turner appears on the 1807 territorian census in Decatur County, but I don't know if he is my Wm. Turner or another. He is definitely in Switzerland Cty. by 1820. BTW, I have looked at "The Turner Family Magazine" that is in the Library of Congress microfilm collection. It is odds and ends of information and not very helpful. There is only one or two paragraphs about the three brother, Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednigo. This line is written up better in some of the other Turner genealogies. If you would be interested, I could make up a bibliography of books on the Turner family that are in the LoC collection. There are some 40 to 50 books about the Turners so it would be a fairly long file. It's from Pioneer Families of America p. 347: SIMMS. - Matthew Simms and his wife, who was a Miss Emory, removed from North Carolina to Madison County, Ky., in 1779. Their children were - Nancy, William, Elizabeth, Lucinda, and Josiah. William married Sally Barnes, of Kentucky and settled in Howard County, Mo., in 1818. His children were.......Elias married Elizabeth Martin, and settled in Missouri in 1819. William married Mary Gay and settled in Audrain County in 1835. Irvin married Elizabeth Turner, and settled in Boone County in 1819. John married Martha Crews, and settled in Boone County the same year. Elizabeth married James Barnes, who settled in Boone County in 1815. Rebecca married Azal Barnes, who settled in Missouri in 1835. Lucretia married Benjamin Barnes, who settled in Boone county in 1816. Nancy married Ezekiel Hickman, who settled in Boone County in 1816. Sally married George Hickman, who settled in Boone County in 1835. Has anybody in the group run across the Elizabeth Turner who married Irvin Simms and settled in Boone Co., MO in 1819? I'm guessing that both of them were related to my Barnes/Turner line, as well as to each other (cousins). Majie Alley =============================================================== Subj: Turner Information Date: 96-01-28 00:00:55 EST From: DP6195 CC: DP6195 I saw your posting about the Turner family on the bulletin board. While I do not have much data, I thought it would be worthwhile to pass along what I do have since we might be looking in the same neighborhood. Please let me know if you can add anything to my fragment. Thanks. Sarah Turner married Christopher Long in 1773 in Culpepper County, Virginia. She died in 1822 but I don't know where. Christopher and Sarah's daughter Ellen "Nelly" Long later married Henry Fee. My only information about them is that their son Thomas Fee Sr. was born 5/17/1811 in Henry Co., Virginia so that helps set the overall timeframe and could lead one to speculate that Sarah and Christopher probably remained in Virginia. That's it! Good luck. =============================================================== Subj: TURNER family Date: 96-01-18 10:55:22 EST From: BKeys26433 To: N4JED CC: Cgaunt@umich.edu, NCreed Hi, I am very behind in reading my VA-ROOTS digests. I just read the postings of December 2, 1995 and saw the mention of Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego Turner. I have no Turners in my line, however I do have a book titled "Deep East Texas Folk: The Tillers, Crenshaws, Woodleys, Goldens, and Other Related Families of Panola and Harrison Counties". It is written by Terry G. Jordan and Mary Lynn Tiller Wier. I purchased the book from a used book store hoping to learn a little more about Panola Co. TX.. Anyway, It has a mention of those TURNERS, the daughter of Shaderack II, Mary Turner (born March 1, 1776), married William M. Golden and they moved to Madison Co. Alabama. Their first son Richard G. Golden later moved to Panola Co. Tx. There is more information given about the Turners, about 3 pages, then a lot more on Richard and his dedcendants. The book says a limited edition of 400 copies were published in 1976, mine is #129. There are two addresses given: Terry G. Jordan 315 Ridgecrest Circle Denton, TX 76201 Mary Lynn Weir 1804 Twentieth St. Orange, TX 77630 I hope this information may be off some help to you. In the original posting of mine I didn't know where George TUrner was born. I know have found out that he was born about 1780 in NC. So I have been "talking" with Mary about her NC line. Shadrack had a son William had a son George b 1776. That would have made him 23 when he married Susannah Adams. Also the fact that Shadrack was a landowner in Halifax Co, VA. The same county that my George and Susannah were married in and Susannah was born there. Alos found out that Susannah's parents were Richard and Hannah Boyd and Hannah's parents were Goerge and Amy Boyd. Richard was b in Halifax Co, VA in 1762 and married in 1781. George Boyd died in 1803 in Halifax Co, VA and at that time Richard Adams was dead but Hannah (Boyd) Adams was still living. Also learned that Susannah died in 1840 in Humphreys Co, TN. Mary had a query from a Hawkins Co, TN magazine that had a query on my Carter Turner. I was able to take a 11 year old query, find a current address, and called her yesterday. She still lives in KY and her and my grandmother and her are second cousins. She was able to connect up my grandma and her long lost cousin that she played with as a child in KY and hasn't heard from her since 1966. Boy was she happy :) All do to u and your list. Thanks so much for your effort an dtime u spend doing this :) :) :) At 08:27 AM 2/11/96 -0500, you wrote: >In a message dated 96-02-09 17:33:25 EST, you write: >>>haven't received any posts >>since my computer crashed a few weeks ago. I have traces out tree from her back to a Williamson Burnett. I have compiled a LOT of information on them. Mostly records from Bedford County, Va. Basically it is as follows: AUGUSTA FRANCES BURNETT: b. 14 Nov 1880 in Bedford, Va., the first of six children I know about. M. Waddie B. Salmon on 27 Dec. 1899 in Bedford. AUSTIN BANKS BURNETT: b. 16 March 1850. Died 19 October 1929 in Campbell Co., Va. Married AUGUSTA FRANCES JACKSON. Their children: ELLIS MOORMAN, ROSA B., FRANCES ELIZABETH, NONA BURTON and ALICE. CHRISTOPHER AMMON BURNETT: b. 07 January 1810 in Bedford. Married ORPHY JANE LEFTWICH on 26 December 1829 in Bedford. Their children: AUSTIN BANKS (above), WILLIAM, JOSEPH, SARAH ANN, BENJAMIN HENRY and ISAACC. JAMES H. BURNETT: b. abt. 1792 in Buckingham Co., Va. Married Nancy Phelps. Children: CHRISTOPHER AMMON (above). WILLIAMSON BURNETT: b. abt 1753 or 63 in Buckingham County, Va. Married NANCY PHELPS, 15 March 1792. He died 03 June 1833 in Bedford. This is a very small part of what I have on Burnett. I have a lot of pages of records from Bedford. Their courthouse NEVER burned. What is the best way for me to forward all this information? Hardcopy, a disk. Either way is not a problem? I use Family Tree Maker to compile all my information. I e-mailed a couple of people about Burnetts' and they both said I should get in touch with you as you are the compiler of a lot of information on them. Question: Are you old enough to remember who Smiley Burnett is? (Grin) My 82 year old aunt said when she was a little girl she came to their house and spent the day as he was kin. It's Monday, but have a good week. Hope I can help. -- Waddie Salmon BM1 - USN - Ret. =============================================================== Subj: BURNETT-TURNER-VIA-ETC #1 Date: 02/14/96 To: waddiesalmon@usa.pipeline.com Waddie: Thanks for your mail. In a message dated 96-02-12 12:48:31 EST, you write: >Question: Are you old enough to remember who Smiley Burnett is? (Grin) > My 82 year old aunt said when she was a little girl she came to their >house and spent the day as he was kin. You got me. I have no idea who Smiley Burnett might be. I should have asked my mom when I talked to her on the phone last night. She's 83. So who was Smiley? >What is the best way for me to forward all this information? Let me tell you what I've been doing. A lot of folks on line were researching some Patrick-Henry Co VA surnames that I was also searching. So I volunteered to compile a mailing list for several lines--TURNERs, BURNETTs, VIAs, ETC/ETC from the Patrick-Henry-Bedford-Franklin area of VA. (The list has grown and the info is flowing.) I'm not looking for a lot of info, just enough, that when someone else reads it they will know if there might be a possible connection. I'm take a look at your info from your mail message, bounce it against mine, and see if we might have some mutual lines. I'll also copy your mail message to a document that I'm compiling of other mail messages that I've recently received re these families. Within the next few days, I'll mail the entire listing, 20 pages or so, to about 20 some people. I suspect most of these folks will scan it for connections and will get in touch with the originator if they find a match. To get you caught up with the rest of the folks, I'm going to send you the BIG COMPILATION. I think I originally sent about 3 small ones. But Chris Gaunt put the BIG COMPILATION on Compuserve. So it should have it all. I will send as a ANSCI-DOS file. If that doesn't work at your end, let me know and I'll resend. Looking forward to hearing from you. Good luck. There I found lots of information on Turners but much of it was conflicting. Evan was listed as son of John Turner and Catherine Lewis and grandson of Richard Turner; great grandson of John Turner Sr. b. 1740 in Prince Frederick Maryland. On other papers Evan was the son of Isaac (John Turner's brother) and Nancy Hook. Reading further, Evan's parents are listed as Richard Turner and Minerva Ellis, with a brother Acey Turner. At this point I'm totally confused and don't know how to sort this out. Anyone working on this family or have suggestions how to find Evan's true parents? Thanks, Connie connie.spaw@cbis.com =============================================================== Hope this worked for everyone. Nyla
