I am researching John Turner of GA birth about 1805. I would sure like to be included in your group. pennym@bmi.net Penny ================================================ Date: Sun, 11 Aug 1996 16:56:43 -0700 From: Penny To: ncreed@erols.com Subject: pennym@bmi.net Hi Nyla, This is the summary of all of my efforts. I guess this is what you wanted to know. My research is back to John Turner and I have a Census recording him in Cass Co.(Bartow) in 1850, also one of his sons who always seems to live next door to him. I do have all of the family names tied together by a Probate will submitted in Oct 1884, right after John Turner died. He was then in Upshur Co. Texas. I estimate John Turner to have been born about 1805 from the ages of his children and census records I have found. The probate did not give his place of birth or date. He had 10 children. I have some records (Death Certificated of his Grandson)saying one of John's sons was born in Savanah, but I'm not sure that is the case. Thank you very much pennym@bmi.net Penny ========================================================== Penny, I've not heard from Dennis Garrett for some time. I don't think I have a current eMail address for him. Chris Gaunt's home page where the archives are stored: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt Highlight the Burnett-Turner-Ross-Via-Etc/Etc line. There is a search capability. You can also download all the files (one at a time) on to your hardisk or a floppy disk. Or you can print them. I think there's about 225 pages or more. I just remember I wanted to send you the last compilation. That will give you a feel as to what they're all about. Nothing formal. Just information. It only goes back to 1806. Obediah was born in Franklin County, Virginia. I don't know where Archibald was born. Any help would be appreciated. Russell D. Turner, JR. FIRST GENERATION 1. Archibald Abraham TURNER was born in 1806. Name could be Abraham Archibald, in 1850 Census, he was listed as Abraham, in 1860, he was listed as Archibald. In 1850, he was a laboror, in 1860, listed as a farmer, with holdings worth $200. The 1870 Census lists a white female, named Josephene age 6, living with Archibald Turner and Mary Turner, this must have been a granddaugher, for they were 65 and 68, respectivly. He was married to Mary Susan CREASY on 10 May 1825 in Bedford County, Virginia. Archhibald Turner and Mary Creasey, were married by Rev. James Mitchell, Thomas Creasey, Jr. Security. According to page 290 of Leftwich/Turner Families of Virginia. Mary Susan CREASY was born in 1804. (Spelling may be CREASEY, see Leftwich Turner, page 209). Children of Archibald Abraham TURNER and Mary Susan CREASY were: +2 i. Malinda TURNER. +3 ii. Mary J. TURNER was born in 1833. +4 iii. Obadiah D. TURNER. +5 iv. William TURNER. +6 v. John S. TURNER. SECOND GENERATION 2. Malinda TURNER was born in 1831. The 1850 Census lists Malinda as a 19 year old daughter of Abraham. In the 1870 Census, it lists a Malinda Sloan living near (Abraham) Archibald Turner and her age is 40. We shall list this Malinda Sloan and her children as being decendants of Abraham Turner until we can prove otherwise. Children of Malinda TURNER and ? SLOAN were: 7 i. Thomas TURNER was born in 1854. 8 ii. Judith TURNER was born in 1858. 9 iii. Rufus TURNER was born in 1860. 10 iv. Lucy TURNER was born in 1862. [NOTE: Should 7, 8, 9, and 10 above be SLOAN instead of TURNER? -- Nyla] 4. Obadiah D. TURNER was born in 1834 in Franklin County, Virginia. He died on 20 Jul 1929 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Obediah died at 3 p.m. July 20, 1929 He was buried on 21 Jul 1929 in The Turner Cemetery. The Turner Cemetery was behind the home of Obediah on Spring Hill Mountain. In 1985, it was a corn field and there were no headstones. He was a Farmer. Fought in Confederate Army(?).Brought 2 slaves with him to West Virginia. They were Mac Davis and Mac's father. Mac became a barber at Chestnut Street and the West Virginia Turnpike in Spring Hill,(later named South Charleston) West Virginia.{The 1880 census indicates that Obediah was born in 1841, the 1860 and the the 1850 census say 1832. The 1900 census indicates that Obediah was born in 1831, however it also says that he was 62 in 1900, which would put him being born in 1838.} Page 200 of the Franklin Co., Virginia census in 1850, lists Obediah's Schoolteacher as John Hogan, age 59. John's wife, Meldonia , age 24, and children Jerimah C. (6), Mary E. (4), and George Wm. (1). The list also includes the following classmates: Joseph Kinnett (12), Isabell Kinnett (8), Judith F. Is this Minerva M.? age 7 in 1880 Census? 5. William TURNER was born in 1835. In the 1870 Census, William and Molly had one child, it is difficult to read, however I think it is Minerva. They also had a 14 year old male black farm laborer named Heawt??? Brooks living with them. Molly's name was listed first in the Census, indicating that she was the landowner.
