Be it known to all men that I George Turner, of the County of Franklin and State of Virginia, do make this my last will and testament in mannerand form followeth to wit. 1st - My will is that all my just debts and burial expenses be paid out of my perishable estate. 2nd - I will and bequeath to my beloved wife, Mildred Turner, during her natural Life all my lands standing in my name, except the tract known by the name of the Guilliams tract, which I desire to be sold by my executors, either public or private as they may think best. John was a Primitive Baptist preacher along with his brother Elkanah. When the church split about 1850, John went with the missionary wing of the Baptist church. He served as a Civil Magistrate in Patrick County, Virginia prior to 1850. John owned as many as 12 slaves. John served a term as an Ensign during the War of 1812 and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. The listed birth and death dates above come from the gravestone where John is buried. His grandson - William Turner - writing in 1914 listed John's birth as September 21, 1779 and his death as May 20, 1874. There remains confusion as to the children of Rev. John Turner and his first cousin John Turner, Jr. - son of John M. Turner and Elizabeth "Betsy" Price. Elkanah was a successful farmer and trader in discounted interest-bearing paper. He had as many as 15 slaves at one time.Widely recognised, Elkanah served a term as a Civil Magistrate and was Land Valuing Commissioner for Patrick County, Virginia. Elkanah served as a Major in the county militia and entered service near the end of the War of Northern Aggression. He fought at Appomattox, Virginia. He lost his estate as a result of the war and worked hard to rebuild his position afterwards becoming a depot agent. Elkanah d. of dropsey at age 76 years unmarried. 272 F xi.
