I am headed for a Turner Reunion on the 17th of August at Drews Creek, Raleigh County, West Virginia. These are mostly descendants of John Burnett Turner, Jr. I descend through John's sister, Mary Jane (Turner) Dickens. Only a few of my own line will be there, but just spending the day with my grandmother's relatives will be great. My grandmother used to say, "Oh, the Turners are fine people." I've come to know some of these wonderful people and agree with my grandmother 100 percent. Chris Gaunt's home page where the archives are stored: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt Most of us old-timers know the importance of including a SASE when we send a snail mail request to someone. I must admit if there's a SASE enclosed, I will answer the letter promptly. Otherwise, I do it at my leisure and when I have extra stamp. If you're wondering why you never got a reply to some of those letters you've written, could it be that you forgot the SASE? Some fellas just took off in those days when it was easy to disappear and started new families elswhere. Could this man have done so, or did something fatal happen to him? Hughes" To: "'Nyla Creed DePauk'" Subject: Thanks Date: Mon, 5 Aug 1996 15:52:35 -0400 Nyla, Thanks for adding me to your list. I was very impressed with all the information and downloaded all 215 pages of the Archives yesterday to a floppy. I am trying now to get back into genealogy after almost 2 years, and am beginning to realize how behind I am. During this time, I collected a lot of research in the form books, photos, single notes, letters, articles, etc. but really don't know what all I have. I will be happy to share and post my family when I have the information in shape. If anyone has questions now, I would be glad to try to answer. I want to go through the Turner Archives to see what sort of information has been shared, what's needed and learn what I can add, etc. I am writing a Turner book; however, the main focus of the book is the family of my maternal grandparents--ALVAH JEREMIAH TURNER and NANCY JANE TURNER and their descendants, with articles on their lives, photos, etc. I will have direct drop descendant charts and whatever pertinent and interesting information my research turns up on the ancestral lines for Alvah Jeremiah Turner of JEREMIAH BURNETT, CYNTHIA FOSTER, ELIZABETH GARTH, JOHN GARTH, JOSEPH SHORES PRICE, DANIEL ROSS, ELIZABETH TATE, ISAIAH TURNER, SHADRACK TURNER (descended from both JOHN TURNER and JEREMIAH TURNER); and for Nancy Jane Turner of SUSAN ELLYSON, ALEXANDER INGRAM, JAMES INGRAM*, JANE INGRAM, THOMAS P. JORDAN, ELIZABETH NUNN, JUDITH PATTERSON, RICHARD PILSON, CHARLES THOMAS, GEORGE PIRANT THOMPSON, and FRANCIS TURNER. Currently, the vast majority of my information is on my Turner lines in Patrick, Henry and adjacent Counties, VA. I thought I would pass on some information on two books which I find are very useful; both by cousins of mine. The first is Tombstone Inscriptions of the Cemeteries of Patrick County Virginia, Revised and Expanded, Compiled by O. E. Pilson, Gateway Press, 1994, LOC 84-81542. He's asked that all correspondence and book orders be directed to him at Route 4, Box 317, Ridgeway, VA 24148. He has written a new history of Patrick County which is being edited now. I don't know when this will be published. It was still in the works when I visited with him in VA last year. The other book is Cathell-Rangeley Turner, A Family History by James H. Turner, Ph.D., 1988, Gateway Press and Supplement, March 1990; LOC 87-83737. The "Turner" is Shadrack's line. Jim has done a lot of research on and remains very much interested in who Shadrack's father might be and what Ann's maiden name was. He has seen no sound documentation to support any of the current theories on either name. Jim poses an interesting theory of origin of the Shadrack Turner family--Scotland. I've wondered about the Scotland connection every since I was at a Gathering in Toronto, Canada in the 1970's and found the Turners (Lamont Clan) there. Unfortunately, his book is out of print; however, it is available in many libraries. This book is extremely well documented. Jim is not well and on oxygen, so phone calls are out. He lives just north of me now and I spoke with him this morning and he said that if anyone has a SHORT question, send him a letter and he will try to answer: 4927 Falcon Blvd. Port St. John, FL 32927. I've met and spent time with both of these gentlemen and they are remarkable individuals. I do have many other ancestor lines from Patrick/Henry/Floyd Counties from my dad's side of the family (NOLEN; NOWLIN until CHARLES P. NOWLIN changed his name to Nolen either before he ran for the VA Assembly or during his term. My aunt told me that one of the Nowlin's stole a horse and Charles didn't want to be associated with that.) which will be the material for my second book in years to come. There is at least one link from Dad's family to the Francis Turner line. My ggmother, JUDITH ANN TURNER (m. ISAAC NOLEN), was the daughter of JEFFERSON TURNER, son of FRANCIS TURNER, JR. Thanks again for all your time and work to make this information available. *The James Ingram who married MARTHA (last name unknown to me), as opposed to James Ingram who married Elizabeth Hall. James/Elizabeth Ingram are ancestors on my paternal NOLEN side; also from the same area in VA. ====================================================== From: yasoked@shani.net Date: Mon, 05 Aug 1996 21:18:39 +0100 To: ncreed@erols.com Subject: Anita Turner Shalom again Nyla, I deeply appreciate your prompt reply and action.
