Nyla ============================= Date: Sun, 30 Jun 1996 23:48:45 -0500 X-Sender: pward@the.express-news.net (Unverified) To: NCreed@erols.com From: Paula Ward Subject: TURNER, Thomas K., and Exoney, Exonia, etc. Hi, Nyla, I've been reviewing comments from other Turner researchers regarding Thomas K. Turner b. abt 1805 VA m. Caroline Pyrtle Sept 1825 Henry Co VA. I found the information about Thomas K. Turner's children in two sources: 1) Thomas K. Turner's will, settled in Franklin Co Court 2 October 1848. He names his "...beloved wife Caroline and her ten children...", then talks about each of them as he names them: "...America Turner, Lucy Ann Turner, Elizabeth Turner, Perlina (Paulina) Jane Turner, Excony Turner, Mary L. Turner, Sarah Turner, Susan Turner, Martha Turner, and Margaret Turner..." 2) The 1850 census, Franklin Co VA, does not list Thomas K. Turner because he died prior to October 1848; Caroline Turner is listed as head of household with all ten daughters who are named above, ranging in age from 4 to 24. Thomas K. and Caroline Pyrtle Turner's dau, Exconey (or Exoney) Turner, b. abt 1836 Franklin Co VA, was no doubt the same Exoney Turner in Eunice Kirkman's notes who married Monroe Stone (need marriage record) and hanged herself on 27 Feb 1887 in Patrick Co VA. The age recorded in the death record was 34, which was wrong. That would have placed her birthdate about 1853--five years after her father's death. But she *is* named in his will, and she *is* enumerated in the 1850 census. According to the death record she was the daughter of Thomas and Caroline Turner. I believe Eunice Kirkman's research notes are correct about Exonia Turner, dau of Josiah and Mildred Key Turner. I believe this Exonia Turner was married twice, 1st to Charles Foster on 2 Jan 1804 Franklin Co VA; 2nd to Isaac Adams when she moved to Patrick Co VA. Thanks, Eunice, this cleared up some confusion in my research. I also have: Exoney Turner, b. 2 Jan 1762, dau of Shadrach and Ann Turner. A cousin of mine, Edith McGhee Sigmon, sent me the information that this Exoney Turner married Charles Foster in 1781 in Franklin Co VA. I don't have any documentation on that, and this may be a case of information getting mixed up for two people of the same name. Does anyone have birth, marriage, death information for this Exoney Turner? And here's that name again: Exoney Ingram. She was the dau of my ancestors, Alexander and Elizabeth Nunn Ingram. This Exoney (or Econey) was b. 1808/1809 and married Grandison B. Lesseuer 26 Sept 1831 Franklin Co VA. Just curious: Does anyone have any idea where the name Exoney, or Exonia, came from? Thank you, Nyla, for providing this wonderful resource. I don't have a lot of Ingram information, either, and some of what I have I'm not too positive about. David Conner has also sent me some Ingram information to review. I'll compare all three files and see what we've got. This may take a few days. I have four books on Franklin County. Three of them are by Marshall Wingfield: 1) Wingfield, Marshall. "Franklin County, Virginia - A History." Chesapeake Book Company, Berryville VA, 1964. 2) Wingfield, Marshall. "Pioneer Families of Franklin County, Virginia." Chesapeake Book Company, Berryville VA, 1964. (Both of the above were published by Dr. Wingfield's widow, Marie Gregson Wingfield. Dr. Wingfield completed the manuscripts in 1936.) 3) Wingfield, Marshall. "Marriage Bonds of Franklin County, Virginia, 1786-1858, Transcribed from the Original Records, Annotated and Alphabetically Arranged," West Tennessee Historical Society, Memphis, TN, 1939. This book is very interesting to me, since my 3rd-great grandfather, George W. Kelley, married many of the couples listed. 4) "Franklin County, Virginia 1786-1986, A Bicentennial History," by John S. Salmon and Emily J. Salmon. Franklin County Bicentennial Commission, Rocky Mount VA, 1993. If you think it might be helpful, I could post to the list all of the TURNER marriages (from #3). There is no "Bride's Surname Index" so all of the marriages are listed alphabetically by the groom's surname. I would be glad to look up any marriages -- this may be insanity on my part. I don't know how many requests I might get. Written by John Steed, a Genealogist, for genealogists and beginner's alike. There are two versions, DOS and Windows. I have both versions but I prefer the DOS version because it has so many features that have not yet been incorporated into the Win version. Anyone wanting to try these programs can download the shareware versions(these are NOT crippled) from the following locations: For the DOS version: http://www.simtel.com/simtel.net/ When page loads, click on DOS, click on Search DOS index, and type bk5 in the window. Download all five files. Once installed, you can choose from the menu to print the manual. About 50-55 pages, worth every word. For the WIN version: http://web.wingsbbs.com/brotherskpr/ The page has the latest news on updates, etc. Let me urge everyone, when you use these programs, remember, someone spent a lot of time and hard work on them.
