I haven't seen my line mentioned once in 193 compilations, so think it's not worthwhile for me to continue on. However, I would love to hear from anyone familiar with the Cleveland Co, NC Turners. Thanks, Steve Zedney szedney@burgoyne.com ====================== Steve: I found one marriage record for Turners in Cleveland Co NC: Turner, Ross B. Spouse : Mcbrayer, Miriah Marriage date : 22 Apr 1841 ====================== Subj: Josiah OR Joseph Turner children? Date: 97-09-07 21:32:51 EDT From: HarrisSEM@aol.com Hi! In regards to David's inquiry as to which children belong to which family-either Josiah Hunter Turner and Drucilla Philpott Turner OR Joseph Turner and Liddie Nowlin, this is what I have that can definitely be substantiated: In the 1830 Franklin Co., census Josiah and Drucilla have 10 children. In the 1840 census, Josiah and Drucilla have 6 children. Obviously, some have married and moved away from home. In the 1850 census, however, there are names and this is what is listed: visit 1382: Josiah Turner - age 66 Drusila - age 59 John P. - age 22 William - age 20 Samuel H. Turner - age 17 visit 1383: Martha Lackey - age 38 ( also lists her 5 children) visit 1393: Josiah Turner, Jr.- age 28 ( also lists wife, Malinda, and 2 children) visit 1394 James Turner - age 34 ( also lists wife Sarah) I also have an excerpt of a copy of the "Marriage Bonds of Franklin Co., Va 1786-1858" by Marshall Wingfield. On page 138, it says: "Lackey, Wm. and Martha Turner, Sept. 11, 1835. Sur. Josiah Turner" Married by John Turner. On page 155 it says, "8 July 1837 McGuffen , Joseph and Mary Ann Turner. Surety Josiah Turner. Married by John Turner, On page 228 it says: " Turner, Josiah H., s. Wm., and Sarah Turner, dau. Isiah, Dec. 4, 1843. Sur. Meshack Turner." The part about "s. Wm" is a mistake that was recorded in error. This Josiah H. is Josiah Hunter Turner, Jr who married Sarah Turner first, then Malinda ( see above). His father, Josiah Hunter Turner, Sr. was Wm's son. The Sur. Meshack Turner was most likely Josiah Hunter Turner, Jr.'s brother. Since I only have excerpts, I'm sure that there is further information in the entire book if someone has it. Just as a note of interest, the John Turner who performed two of the above marriages was probably the Rev. John Turner who was Josiah Hunter Turner Sr.'s brother. Hopefully, this will show that at least 4 of the children in dispute- Martha, Mary Ann, John P., and Samuel H. were the children of Josiah and Drucilla rather than Joseph and Liddie. Sherry ======================= Sherry: Thanks much for that information. Nyla ======================== Subj: Re: Comp 192 - Burnett-Turner-Ross-Via-Etc/Etc Date: 97-09-07 21:44:39 EDT From: MMay722215 I wanted you to know that, thanks to your newsletter, I have been contacted by Anna Moseley, aka AMose17325@aol.com. Both of us are descended from the most mysterious Aaron Turner of Henry County, GA. Turns out that Anna and I grew up in the same community, although we didn't know each other. We still don't know anything much about Aaron, but two heads are no doubt better than one. I love to find living relatives! So THANKS! Mary Ellen May ======================= Mary Ellen: Finding a live relative is definitely a prize. Glad to know there is someone who can help you with your mysterious Aaron Turner. Date: 97-09-08 14:08:46 EDT From: HarrisSEM To: NCreed1 Hi! Well, I went to the library this morning like I said I was going to do, and was unable to find any more marriages etc that might show that Josiah and Drucilla's kids were theirs rather than those of Joseph Tuner and Liddie. So, what I sent you last night is all that I can contribute. Hopefully someone else will be able to show proof of parentage for the other kids in question! Sherry ================== Folks: Anyone recognize the family of Joseph and Liddie (Nowlin) Turner? I'd sure like to hear from others who have this family listed in their data base. Nyla ================== Subj: TURNER list answers Date: 97-09-08 20:54:38 EDT From: N4JED@aol.com To: VA TRAPPER@aol.com CC: NCreed1@aol.com Cindy, Thanks for the questions. Lets see if I can correct them for you and everyone. The death date of Jeremiah TURNER - 429 and his wife Rachel ROSS - 435. According to Rosalie Davis in her book "The Garth Family 1734- 1986" Rachel Ross died 22 May 1852 and Jeremiah died between 1825 and 1830. The 22 May date I listed for Jeremiah I copied from a posting in Compilation #130 without paying attention to both being listed the same. I believe the #130 listing to be a typo and I have corrected my listing to match Ms. Davis who's research of the 1830 census finds Rachel head of household. Excony TURNER - 495 and Mary TURNER- 498 sisters and daughters of Shadrack TURNER both being married to the same man - William TURNER. Yes, research given me by Eunice Kirkman who has done quite a bit of work in the heart of TURNER country (Patrick and Henry Counties) and others have these two sisters married to William. Shadrack lists Mary and William as married in his will and after Mary dies in 1810 in KY, William married her sister Excony. This brings up another error in my data. William HUNTER, Jr. - 901 and William HUNTER (should read Jr. also) - 492 should be one and the same person. Several other people have contributed listings of this line in Nyla's compilations that should provide additional details. Death of Margaret Hill - 508. Please pardon my two finger typing. You are correct her death did not occur "before 1777". That should read "before 1797" which is when Shadrack married again. Margaret married Shadrack in 1777 and Jane unknown married him in 1797.. Thanks for your help in catching my errors. After imputing over 17,000 people - most provided by you the participants in Nyla's mailing list - I am surprised at how well I have done. This is reason why I tell people to use my postings as a starting point for their research not as the end result. While I continue to refine my master list, there will always be questionable data and outright speculation in it. So enjoy and happy hunting. It sure is great to know someone is reading these compilations. We've got to keep David on his toes. He sure keeps me in the hot seat enough. Nyla David, Just teasing. You're doing better with two fingers than I'm doing with ten. Thanks for all your contributions. Nyla =============================== The end of this compilation.
