Nyla CREED DePauk San Diego CA ====================== Subj: Re: Comp 176 - Burnett-Turner-Ross-Via-Etc/Etc Date: 97-08-09 22:44:02 EDT From: Yoricat@aol.com CC: shansen@cyberhighway.net The Caroline County order book lists old Richard Turner deeding land to his four sons in the late 1730s, Richard, James, John and Lewis. When Richard dies in the 1740s Richard is the heir with James the executor. Before the will is administered Richard and John die and James becomes the heir and Lewis and sister Margaret become the executors. At this time the English law was in effect where the oldest inherits everything that has not been deeded away. John is not mentioned by name as dying but he has to be dead for a woman to be appointed since women basically had no rights back then. Only the order book is available as all the other records were burned in the Civil War. TURNER. I bet the two are not the same, but here goes. James C. born abt 1802. His father was John TURNER. We don't have his mother's name at this time. His siblings were; Joseph - 1791, Steven - 1795, Mary - 1797, Alexander - 1800, Dempsey - 1804 and George C. - 1805. All the children were born in SC. Their father, John-1752, followed his sons to Holmes CO, FL and we believe he died there in abt 1840's, but have no proof. We believe that John had two brothers named; Alexander - 1748 and James - 1756 who came over from Ulster, Ireland on Jan 12, 1768 on the "John and Mary" to SC. There were two other TURNER's on that ship that could be their parents, William and Margaret TURNER. William and his sons (if they are) were given land grants in Craven CO, SC. Some of the other states that the TURNER's were in are; AL, GA, LA and TX. Hope you can help fill in some information on this family. She is the daughter of Joseph COLLINS and Susannah LEWIS of Spotsylvania County, VA. She and Henry did have a child together. Below is all I have on her union to Henry GATEWOOD, JR. Wow, I have a 3rd TURNER connection! Cool, very cool! I wasn't sure of Henry's connection to the TURNERs before... Henry GATEWOOD of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, md. Tabitha COLLINS, born abt. 1720, of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, md. bef. 1757 (listed as Tabitha GATEWOOD on father's will in 1757). Her parents were Joseph COLLINS and Susannah LEWIS. They had a daughter named Sarah GATEWOOD who md. her cousin, Richard COLLINS. Tabitha was the sister of my GG Grandmother, Ann COLLINS who md. Joseph WISDOM. PS> It might be interesting to note that Tabitha is related to the LEWISes that had many land deals with TURNERS in early VA. Those LEWISes were her cousin's families. Its complicated, but two major LEWIS families were united through marriages. >Susannah LEWIS's brother, John Zachary LEWIS II (Tabitha's uncle), had three children (Tabitha's 1st cousins) who intermarried with another LEWIS family and it was that LEWIS family (their uncles, fathers) who had many land deals with the TURNERs.... see, complicated.... The point is that these TURNER/GATEWOODs were related to my COLLINS family, thus created an indirect connection for me... 2 directs and one indirect now.... family history gets more complicated as I go...
