Welcome to the Campbell-L Mailing List!

Please save this message for future reference, including what email
address has been subscribed. Only list subscribers can post to the list,
so it will help you to know what email address is subscribed if you find
you are blocked from posting.

This is a list for anyone who is researching the surname Campbell,
wondering about the Clan Campbell, or wanting to learn about their
Scottish heritage. It has replaced the old "forwards" at
clacampb@freenet.scri.fsu.edu, nn2708@midnet.csd.scarolina.edu, and
elsewhere. If you see mention of these old addresses, please let the site
administrator know that they are no longer in use, and that the list has
moved to Genealogy Online.

**** UPDATE!!! As of August 21, 1999, this list is part of an experiment
in co-operation. There is a Campbell-L list on Rootsweb in addition to
this list, and the listowner there, Tom Hesler, and I, Chris Gaunt, are
trying to help folks find their Campbell ancestors easily. We felt that
linking the lists would be the easiest solution. To our knowledge, this
has not been attempted before. So far, subscribers are able to post to
the list they are subscribed to, and the messages are seen by the
*regular* version subscribers of each list. This morning, Aug. 22, I
added the Rootsweb digest as a "subscriber" to my regular list so that the
digest there will get the posts sent to this Genealogy Online list.
Please note that if you are subscribed to both lists, you will most likely
get 2 copies of each post, and you may want to unsubscribe from one or the
other list. If you have questions, please contact Chris at
cgaunt@umich.edu.

1. Where do I send posts?
Send your queries or messages IN PLAIN TEXT to:

                Campbell-L@genealogy.org

If you do not send in PLAIN TEXT, your message will automatically
be returned to you. If you do not know how to set up your email program
so that it sends PLAIN TEXT, please see the following web site:

        http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm

If you haven't done so already, please post a query for your Campbell
line. Include enough information so that people can look for connections
in their databases, but please do not post your whole database!
Sufficient information includes the basic information from a family group
sheet: first and last names, dates of birth, places of birth spelled out
[since this list reaches all over the globe], marriage dates, places and
to whom, and known children. Include your snail mail address if you would
like to be contacted by others researching the name but who have no email
connections.

Please remember that the messages are archived on Genealogy
Online, and can be seen by anyone. If this bothers you, then please do
not post your mailing address or other personal information.

Note: if you sent a message containing a query when you sent your
subscribe message, it didn't get posted to the list, only to the computer.
You will need to resend it to the posting address.

Please do not send personal messages, subscribe and unsubscribe
messages, or chain email to the posting address.

Foul language in posts to the list will result in removal from
the list without notification.

Messages containing executable programs, Word documents, graphic
files, v-cards, etc will not be posted to list subscribers. They will
automatically be returned to the poster with an explanation.

Messages containing more than half of a previous message will not be
posted to the list. Excessive quoting is not necessary, and only takes up
extra space in the list archives. (If you are trying to post a message you
have seen on another list, forward it rather than reply to it.)

If you have received notification of a computer virus, and
would like to post the information to the list, please check first to make
sure it is not a bogus notification. You can do this by checking the
Virus Busters web page, at:
                http://www.umich.edu/~wwwitd/virus-busters/index.html

If you would like information on becoming a member of the Clan
Campbell Society, contact Walter J. Campbell, the Society Membership
Chairman at WJCFAYNC@aol.com with your post office mailing address
(s-mail), and he will send you a membership packet which includes a
membership application, genealogy form and several pages on the Society.
There is also online info about the Society at their web site at:
                http://www.ccsna.org/newmember/

2. Is the list digested?

If you wish to receive the list in digest format, send an email message
like this:

        To : campbell-d-request@genealogy.org
        Subject: subscribe
Message: [none needed unless required by your email program]

You will also need to unsubscribe from Campbell-L so you do not continue
to receive both the individual emails and the digests. (The list software
does not check to see if you are subscribed to both versions.) To do this,
send a message like this:

        To : campbell-l-request@genealogy.org
        Subject: unsubscribe
        (again, no message is needed.)

There is also a web page you can use to subscribe and unsubscribe at:
        http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/Campbell/purpose.htm

3. Only subscribers can post to the list

Please be aware that only subscribers can post to the list. This
change was implemented 11/11/97 in response to a chain letter message the
list received, but we've also had some other emails that were not
appropriate for the list.
If you just subscribed, and you are reading this Welcome as attached
to the subscription notificatin message, you will find the email address
which has been subscribed; it is the address the list software saw in the
>From header of your subscribe message. That is the one the list software
will look for when it checks to see that you are a subscriber. If you
receive a message telling you that you are not subscribed, yet you are
receiving messages, it might be that your outgoing message has a different
email address from your subscribe message. (You can check this by sending
a test message to yourself or by looking at your email program's setup
configuration. You may need to resolve any differences with your Internet
Service Provider, or by changing your email program's configuration.)

4. Are the posts archived? How do I search the archives?
Yes, the posts are archived and they can searched by email, web or
retrieved by ftp:

   a. Email
For help on archive commands, a "help" file for, which you can
retrieve using the message "help" with the Subject: "archive"
        (no quotes).

For help on how to search the text of the messages, get the file,
srcharch, by email: (The server is case-sensitive, so be sure to
      use lower-case!)

      To : Campbell-L-request@genealogy.org
      Subject: archive
      Message: get srcharch

(Note: remove your sig lines as they seem to be interpreted as
      commands by the archive server.)

   b. Web
If you have web access you can reach the archives using this URL:
              ftp://ftp.genealogy.org/pub/lists/campbell-l
[Previous or "old" subscribers should note that this is a new
URL; Genealogy Online now has a separate ftp server.]

There is a very rudimentary index at the top of the listing. If
you check its creation date against the most recent file, you can
tell if I've updated it. If I haven't, send me a message nudging
      me to do so :-)

   c. Ftp
You can retrieve any of the files using ftp to:
        ftp.genealogy.org, cd pub/lists/campbell-l
The above directions put you in the same directory as the web method.

5. Is there a list of subscribers?
No, there is not. This is to protect your privacy.

6. Why did I get an unsubscribe message?
The software running the list (SmartList) will automatically delete
a subscriber after a certain number of bounces. If you are unsubscribed,
simply subscribe again. I've set the number to a very high number, so
you should not be unsubscribed often. However, you won't be getting all
the emails if your server is down, the connection is refused, and so on,
so you may need to investigate your email connections on your end to see
if there is any problem.

7. Is there an ftp site where I can send files?
Yes, there is an ftp site. Please contact Chris for instructions at
cgaunt@umich.edu.

8. Is there a Campbell web site?
The Clan Campbell Society (North America) pages are at this URL:
                      http://www.ccsna.org
If you have ideas for what should be on the web site, please post them to the
list.

Diarmid Campbell and I created some text pages that are currently
linked at:
       http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/Campbell/clan.html

There is also Scotland info in Genealogy Resources on the Internet,
at the following URL:
         http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/scotland.html

9. How do I get off the list?
You should use the same email address that you are unsubscribing from,
and follow these directions:

9a. Regular list subscribers

     Send a message as follows:

     To : Campbell-L-request@genealogy.org
     Subject: unsubscribe
Message: [none needed unless required by your email program]

9b. Digest list subscribers

     Send a message as follows:

     To : Campbell-D-request@genealogy.org
     Subject: unsubscribe
Message: [none needed unless required by your email program]

Again, there is a web page which puts the Subject line in for you
(you just need to decide which link to follow):
        http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/Campbell/purpose.htm#SUBSCRIBE

10. What is Genealogy Online?
It's the site that houses our mailing list, as well as many other
lists, personal accounts, files, and web pages. It is administered by
Michael Cooley, who has only recently implemented a charge for accounts.
Donations are gladly accepted, as there are quite a few users (like me)
who have been grandfathered in and are not charged for disk space or the
account to run the mailing lists. Donations are used to upgrade the
system, and will probably be used in the future to lease the T1 line
which Michael is currently getting through his job.

If you wish to contribute to Genealogy Online's upgrade fund, the address
for donations is:

        Michael Cooley
        Genealogy Online
        P.O. Box 123
        Capitola, CA 95010
