BTVRETC-L Mailing List
BTRVETC-L Mailing List
What the List Is
This is a list for anyone who is researching the surnames Burnett, Turner,
Ross, and Via, as well as other families from Southwestern Virginia. It has
replaced the old "Burnett-Turner-Ross-Via-Etc/Etc Mailing List" which was
maintained by Nyla CREED DePauk at NCreed1@aol.com.
How to Get On or Off the List
The following instructions tell you how to get on and off the list. (If
you have Netscape set up for email, the message should pop up
automatically with the correct Subject and your correct email address.)
There are two versions of BTRVETC-L:
- The first is the
regular version, which emails messages out to subscribers one at a time.
This lets you read them "as they happen".
The other is the digest version, which is really one large message
composed of the regular list messages. The digest message is sent out
every three days or sooner, depending on how active the list is. They are
usually no larger than about 30K.
No matter which version of the list you choose, the mailing address for
posts is the same: BTRVETC-L@genealogy.org. You
must be a list subscriber to post to the list.
(There are aliases for genealogy.org which will work as well:
emcee.com, and genealogy.emcee.com.)
Getting on or off the Regular List
To subscribe to BTRVETC-L and receive individual posts from the list,
send an email as follows:
- To : BTRVETC-L-request@genealogy.org
Subject : SUBSCRIBE
Message : (none needed unless required by your email program)
**** Note: if you are using the web to subscribe, you must make sure
the subject is correct, and that the email address in your browser is
valid.
To unsubscribe from BTRVETC-L, send the following message:
- To : BTRVETC-L-request@genealogy.org
Subject: UNSUBSCRIBE
No message is needed. Please note that you must use the same email
address to unsubscribe that you used to subscribe.
Getting on or off the Digest
To subscribe to BTRVETC-D and receive messages bundled together into
a Digest, send an email as follows:
- To : BTRVETC-D-request@genealogy.org
Subject : SUBSCRIBE
Message : (none needed unless required by your email program)
To unsubscribe from BTRVETC-D, send the following message:
- To : BTRVETC-D-request@genealogy.org
Subject: UNSUBSCRIBE
No message is needed. Please note that you must use the same email
address to unsubscribe that you used to subscribe.
To post to the folks on the list, send your messages to BTRVETC-L@genealogy.org.
When you subscribe, you should receive back a message from the list
software telling you that you've been added. Along with that message you
will receive the Welcome message. If you do not receive this message,
then something has happened along the way, most likely a bounced message.
Please contact the listowner, Chris Gaunt at cgaunt@umich.edu if you do
not receive a confirmation/Welcome message.
When you unsubscribe, you
should receive back a message telling you that you've been removed from
the list. Do be aware that Internet email does not travel in a straight
line, but sometimes takes the "scenic route." Consequently, you may
receive emails from the list even after you are unsubscribed. These
emails probably left the server at Genealogy Online before your
unsubscribe message reached it, but for some reason are taking longer to
get to your site than the unsubscribe notification.
Server Commands and Message Archives
Our list runs on Smartlist, which is very different from other list
software in that it REQUIRES a subject. The subject is the command it
looks for: subscribe, unsubscribe, archive, etc. One of these must be in
the Subject for the software to understand what you want.
Commands are sent to: BTRVETC-L-request@genealogy.org or to:
BTRVETC-D-request@genealogy.org.
- subscribe - will subscribe the email address of the sender
- unsubscribe - will remove the email address of the sender
- archive - lets the software know you want to hunt around in the archives via email.
(For the help file, type "help" as the only text in the message.)
You can also
hunt in the archives by following this link to the
BTRVETC-L message archives
