A simple idea to help boost Michigan technology industries

Proposal

Create an easy way for people to communicate, identify problems, brainstorm solutions, and work out issues related to expanding Michigan's technology industries.

Method

Use moderated email-groups/listservs (not chat areas.) For private grouprs, filter out SPAM and unsolicited email. "Seed" the discussion to get things going; identify issues of value to members to motivate their participation; point out topics to spur discussion.

Create the right environment so a member is comfortable to say what's on his or her mind. This will probably require a general discussion group and smaller specfic subgroups - partly to avoid sending mail to everyone, which dilutes the message's value. Members can decide what type of information and other items should be broadcast to the general group.

For example, a group of venture capitalists might prefer to discuss a topic in a private group. Regional groups may wish to address geographically specific issues; Topical target groups could have relatively narrow focus, etc. A calender of events would be sent monthly to the general group.

Some logistic, adminstration and resource points will need to be addressed, but that's not a show-stopper. A service provider host and email-group list-monitor/moderator are primarily what is needed.

(In fact, the author could quickly establish several such discussion groups. However, it's unclear (a) if that verges on inapporpriate use of an alumni account, or (b) whether a university-affiliated discussion group would be embraced by the business community.)
