The goal of this course is to achieve a deep understanding of certain algebraic structures. Key examples include the set of integers ("Z"), the set of real numbers ("R"), and the set of congruence classes modulo n ("Z / nZ"). We will study these structures in an abstract setting and also in the context of some applications.
We will practice using a style of reasoning which is typical in advanced mathematics. The style is based on formal definitions and proofs.
The textbook for the course is A Concrete Introduction to Higher Algebra by Lindsay Childs, 3rd edition. Please bring this book with you to class every day.
We will have weekly homework assignments which will be due on Tuesdays. Please note that I don't accept late homework,1 but I will drop each student's lowest homework grade at the end of the semester. In addition to the homework sets, there will be two major written assignments during the semester.
This course will have one midterm exam and one final exam. The midterm exam will be given in class on November 3rd. The final exam will be given on December 21st, 10:30am - 12:30pm.
Final grades will be computed using the following percentages:
1: I can make exceptions to the no-late-homework policy if there's a medical reason (such as if a student is sick with the flu). If you're ill and you need an extension, e-mail me before the assignment is due.
