Do you accept simultanous submissions? (What are simultaneous submissions?)
What types of submissions do you accept?
I submitted a story/poem/novel/image, but you rejected it. Will you give me the specific reason?
Where and how do I send it to you?
Will you critique my submission?
What happens if you accept my submission?
What do I get if you publish my work?
What if you reject my submission?
What is your submission and publication schedule?
Some authors like to send their stories to multiple potential publishers at the same time. This is considered "simultaneous submission."
Ultraverse editors spend a significant amount of time reading and considering the place of each piece in the upcoming issues. In the past, we have had stories yanked out of our hands at the last minute because the author received a faster offer from another e-zine. For this reason, Ultraverse does not accept simultaneous submissions.
Ultraverse.us accepts submissions in the following categories:
In the final tally, Ultraverse receives too many submissions to accept them all, even if they were all top-notch work. We don't tell you why because it takes so long to respond individually to each and every person.
Ultraverse.us does not accept:
Below are some of the other common reasons why each type of submission is rejected.
We only accept the top three or four submissions for each issue. We may have felt your story just wasn't quite as good as our top choices.
On the other hand, you may also need to have an honest friend or colleague thoroughly critique your work, to help you find flaws in the science, plot or character development. And for heaven's sake, be sure to proofread it for spelling/grammar/punctuation before you submit it to us. Although we consider Ultraverse to be beginner-friendly -- we work with authors who show potential, even if their stories are imperfect and they've never been published -- all writing must contain some level of sophistication to be interesting to our readers.
Fiction submissions of all types must be complete. We will not agree to publish a story on the basis of an outline, synopsis, or query letter.
Please Note: Authors may submit only two poems per issue. Each batch of submissions must be sent in a separate email so it can be considered separately. We strongly suggest sending submissions no further than two months in advance of the issue in which you want them to be published.
The purpose of a book review is to critically examine plot, story, character development, world-building, conflict, and other important elements of the book; to illuminate the entertainment, instructive or literary value of the book; and occasionally to compare/contrast it with similar writings in the genre. As a reviewer, your goal is to let the reader know whether he/she may be interested in the book and why.
For this reason, thumbs up/thumbs down reviews will be rejected outright, as will reviews that read like an endorsement of your best friend's work or reviews that consist primarily of a synopsis. Any synopsis contained within a review must be the review-writer's original description - Ultraverse will not accept a synopsis taken from a book jacket, for instance, regardless of whether the copyright holder's permission has been obtained.
Illustrations may be submitted as small as 300x300px in any image format, but must be provided in the requested size, resolution and file format upon acceptance.
We want our site to be appreciated by the widest possible audience -- including teens, pre-teens, men and women of different cultures around the world. Therefore, Ultraverse is not the appropriate venue for nudes or erotic images of any type, even if the nudes are half-alien.
Images submitted for use as SciFiMage topics may never be rejected, but may remain in our queue. However, we will not use an image without getting the artist's explicit permission for use in a particular issue.
We receive dozens of commercial emails each week about new novels, web sites, films, etc., and most of them get filtered into our junkbox. There's only one way to differentiate your email from spam: submit it in the correct format (described here).
Make sure you submit it exactly as requested. It takes a lot of time for our volunteers to read, respond to, and edit submissions, put the web pages together, archive the previous issue, proofread each page, and notify the mailing list of the new issue. Please don't send us an email with a link and expect us to do all the work -- we're already giving you a free place to publicize your novel.
We cannot guarantee a response time. If a piece has been in our hands for more than six weeks and we decide we want to use it, we will query you to be sure you have not already committed it elsewhere.
If you request it and we have time, we may provide a critique.
If we decide we want to publish your story or article, we may request that you make changes to it. You may refuse, but please be aware that your submission may be rejected on that basis alone.
These are our terms:
If we decide we want to publish your image in any part of Ultraverse, including SciFiMage, these are our terms:
If you refuse the above terms (except for permission to archive your submission), or you do not repond to our offer to publish by the deadline stated in our offer email, we may consider the offer terminated.
Please note that our publication is an American English publication, and standard American English spellings will be used.
Payment is in recognition only. We have incorporated advertising and a "donations" button, but have not yet received funding to begin compensating authors.
We will send you a form letter (email) letting you know that we can't use it.
Refer to the official schedule for dates.
Authors/illustrators accepted for publication will be notified the first day of the month before publication.
