A Gnome's Observation

By Ishtar Johnston

Resting on my meal of quail
Delighted, I impart my tale
observed upon our nature's stage
recorded on this charcoaled page
a secret now released from age

The Autumn past a seed was sown
by hand of whom remains unknown
before the shady oaken girth
upon a mound of living mirth
adopted by our Mother Earth

So gracefully without a sound
sprouting forth the fertile ground
a single stem rose up to breathe
upon the wind it danced and weaved
the Violet of Midsummer's Eve

Near did I so not to crowd
and deep within the petal shroud
a glimpse of form was spied by me
enchanted now I took a knee
undisturbed, I watched with glee

With movement came the evening hour
unfurled the silken purple flower
a gasp I stifled, truth to say
upon the bed of pollen lay
asleep a faerie of the Fey
