The pre-operative clinic on our first working day had more than 40 children with their families waiting to be seen. The Fundacion Pediatrica Guatemalca had brought in many children to be seen. It was surprising how many meningomyelocoeles were less than a week old. What happens the other 51 weeks of the year?
At the end of the day after all the kids had been seen we convened to
decide who were operative candidates and whether they had any special problems
or concerns medically, surgically or anesthetically.
