Cozumel is a 10 by 30 mile island 12 miles off the eastern tip of Mexico in the state of Quintana Roo. The island is virtually flat and almost completely covered with dense jungle foliage. The majority of the coastline is rocky, eroded limestone with some sandy beaches on the eastern side. The reef, along with the shelter of the mainland and the Gulfstream's mild currents make Cozumel one of the best SCUBA diving sites in the world. Many consider it second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. I was fortunate enough to spend a week in this wonderful dive paradise at the end of 1997. I am a novice diver and received my NAUI certification in the summer of 1996 in Acapulco, Mexico. In no way could anyone completely experience Cozumel in one week. The purpose of this page is only to share my experiences and give some helpful hints.
The diving on Cozumel is fantanstic! What I have done here is to summarize the locations which I have dove. The summaries involve my personal impressions and sightings along with some things from dive guides. The sites are presented on the map with the numbers corresponding to the link. The purpose of the map is not to provide directions but to give you a general idea of where the sites are. Taxi drivers, dive shops, books, and fellow divers are great sources for exact locations of the sites. I recommend going with a guide on a boat, which requires no navigation except finding the pier in the morning. Furthermore, the boat will drop you over the start of the reef and pick you up when your tank is empty or bottom time is up.
1. Yocab Reef - incredible wildlife 2. Paraiso Reef - great night dive 3. San Francisco Wall - amazing view 4. El Paso del Cedral Reef - my absolute favorite 5. Tormentos Reef - beautiful coral 6. Airplane Flats - the plane and abundant fish |
