The Everlasting Gaze

LyricsInformation
you know I'm not dead
you know I'm
you know I'm not dead
you know I'm not dead
now you know
where I've been
as you sleep
torn I am
weighted down
patiently
born of love
you know I'm
you know I'm not dead
I'm just living in my head
forever waiting
on the ways of your desire
you always find a way
and through it all
into us all you move
forgotten touch
forbidden thought
we can never have enough
you know I'm not dead
you know I'm
you know I'm not dead
you know I'm not dead
found below
the creatures scream
stranglehold
a God machine
begging to tear us out
worn as hope
you know I'm
you know I'm not dead
I'm just the tears inside your head
forever waiting
on the ways of your desire
you always find a way
and through it all
into us all you move
forgotten touch
forbidden thought
we can never have enough
you know I'm not dead
we want to hold in the everlasting gaze
enchanted in the rapture of his sentimental sway
but underneath the wheels lie the skulls of every c.o.g.
the fickle fascination of an everlasting god
you know I'm not dead
I'm just living in my head
forever waiting
forever waiting on cruel death
you know I'm not dead
I'm just living for myself
forever waiting
you know I'm not dead
you know I'm not dead
you know I'm not dead
you know I'm not dead

[Disco King lyrics]

the disco nights are over now
cities are hollow in the fallout
was it love or chemical?
fascination or oh so dreadful?
you run, you run, you run so slow
you run, you run alone

you know i'm not dead
'cause i'm living in my head
'cause i am waiting in the ways of desire
you always find a way
and through the fall, into us all you move

forgotten touch
forbidden thought
we never, ever have enough

you know i'm not dead
you know i'm not dead
i'm just livin' in my head
you know i'm not dead

the disco nights are over now
cities are hollow in the fallout
was it love or was it chemical?
fascination or oh so dreadful?
you run, you run, you run so slow
you run, you run alone

you know i'm not dead
i'm just living in my head
'cause i am waiting in the ways of desire
you always find a way
and through the fall, into us all you move

forgotten touch
forbidden thought
we can never have enough

in the ways of desire
you always find a way
and through the fall, into us all you move

forgotten touch
forbidden thought
we can never have enough

you know i'm not dead
you know i'm not dead

The first radio single from Machina.

Billy Corgan: (from Guitar World April 2000)

"'The Everlasting Gaze' probably had five different versions -- different lyrics, different middle-eights-- and the first version is unrecognizable from the final version."

According to Billy, the rant near the end was written the day of recording, filling in the original gap of silence.

[Disco King] is an early version of this song.

Billy Corgan: (from Machina promo interview cd)

"'The Everlasting Gaze' started as a disco song. Its original title was 'Disco King.' And, it originally had something to do with mocking people on the dance floor. How it transitioned to what it became, I would say in its 6-7 incarnations, I'm not really sure. But I do know that somehow the riff never went away. If you can imagine that with a disco beat under it. Jimmy kinda plays a disco beat, with his tongue in his cheek. Yeah, it was orginally supposed to be a disco song."
