Wayfaring Stranger

Lyrics Information

[Performed Lyrics by Jack White on Cold Mountain]

I am a poor wayfaring stranger
traveling through this world alone
there is no sickness, toil or danger
in that fair land to which I go
I'm going home to see my mother
I'm going home no more to roam
I am just going over Jordan
I am just going over home
I know dark clouds will hover o'er me
I know my pathway is rough and steep
but golden fields lie out before me
where weary eyes no more will weep
I'm going home to see my father
I'm going home no more to roam
I am just going over Jordan
I am just going over home
I'll soon be free from every trial
this form shall rest beneath the sun
I'll drop the cross of self denial
and enter in that home with God
I'm going home to see my savior
I'm going home no more to roam
I am just going over Jordan
I am just going over home

[Original lyrics]

I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world of woe
Yet there's no sickness, no toil or danger
In that bright world to which I go
I'm going there to see my father
I'm going there no more to roam
I'm only going over to Jordan
I'm only going over home
Yes, Lord
I know dark clouds will gather around me
I know my way is rough and steep
Yet beauteous fields lie just before me
Where God's redeemed their vigils keep

I'm going there to see my mother
She said she'd meet me when I come
I'm only going over to Jordan
I'm only going over to home
Goin' home now
Oh, somebody show me the way home

Quotes

Jack White:

"'Sittin' On Top Of The World' was the first blues song I learned how to play--from Howlin' Wolf's version, when I was a teenager, actually--so I had known that. And I knew 'Wayfaring Stranger' from a band I was in called Two-Star Tabernacle--we had played that song. So when I went to audition for the director, I, I already knew how to play that song."
