Purpose

The Sports Medicine Interest Group is an organization within the University of Michigan Medical School.  It is established for medical students with a particular interest in the musculoskeletal system and sports related injuries to better explore the field of Sports Medicine as well as to promote health and wellness throughout the health care system and surrounding communities.  The main goals of the group are to:

  • inform students on the potential pathways that exist to pursue a career in Sports Medicine
  • provide opportunities to attend conferences, lectures, and workshops pertaining to sports medicine
  • facilitate shadowing opportunities between medical students and faculty mentors
  • outreach to the Ann Arbor community through volunteer coaching opportunities and other service projects.

Operations

The interest group will hold meetings throughout the year featuring panel discussions including physicians who have specialized in Sports Medicine through different pathways such as Family Medicine, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics.  A mentoring program will be established in order to provide students with a faculty mentor with whom they can shadow and use as a resource for greater knowledge of the field.  Information about available faculty mentors will be provided on the Sports Medicine Interest Group website.  This will allow for students to seek mentors with whom they share an interest in research, patient population served, or service provided.  The group will also provide opportunities for members to shadow and assist team doctors during sporting events.  To provide opportunities for students to gain additional knowledge of the field, the group will facilitate students in attending conferences, lectures, workshops, and Journal Club events pertaining to the field.  Finally, the group seeks to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle within the Ann Arbor community through service projects, volunteering at community events, and volunteer coaching for children’s sports teams.

Membership

Membership in the Sports Medicine Interest Group will be open to all University of Michigan Medical students.  Members will be expected to attend meetings, group events, and contribute to the growth and development of the group.
