c 1737 Frederick's birthplace is uncertain and has been reported either in
Germany or in Germantown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
c 1738 Maria Elisabeth was born to Johan Henrick and Eva Kramer Bahn in Kreutz
Creek, Hellam Twp, York Co, PA.
1759 Frederick Ruhl and Maria Elisabeth Bahn were married at Christ's Lutheran
Church at York, PA.
Frederick was a cordwainer when he resided in York.
1765 Frederick was naturalized (citizenship) on 15 September.
1769 Maria Elisabeth died in York, PA.
1770 Frederick married Catherina Eva Kann.
1770 Frederick bought 3 acres 64 perches of land in York Twp from Jacob and
Barbara Updegraff.
1773 Frederick and Catherina sold the land in York to Jacob Welshance on 8
March and moved to Shrewsbury Twp, where Frederick became a yeoman (First
Class inhabitant). Frederick was in the second class of inhabitants of
Codorus Twp. These classifications were under an act of assembly passed in
1780 entitled "An Act to Compleat the Quota of the Federal Army".
1773 Frederick purchased 96 acres 9 perches in Shrewsbury Twp, York Co, PA,
called Pleasant Ridge, from Robert and John Freeland.
1779 Frederick Rule was taxed 24 pounds for 96 acres, 1 horse, and 4 cattle in
Shrewsbury Twp, York Co, PA.
1779 Frederick and brother John were appointed guardians for the minor
children (John, Susanna, Magdalena, Peter, and Henry) of brother Clement Ruhl.
1780 Frederick Rule was taxed 15 pounds for 69 (sic) acres, 2 horse, and 3
cattle in Shrewsbury Twp, York Co, PA.
1780 During the Revolutionary War, Frederick was a private in Captain John
Miller's (the third) Company of the Seventh battalion, York Co Militia, and a
Private in Captain Aquila Wiley's Company Fifth battalion, York Co Militia in
1780.
1780 Frederick Rule was taxed 2 pounds 12 shillings 6 pence for 80 acres, 3
horse, and 5 cattle in Shrewsbury Twp, York Co, PA.
1781 A Frederick Ruhl was taxed in Codorus Twp, York Co. John and William
(possible brothers) were also taxed there. This might be a different
Frederick.
1781-82 Frederick was a wagoner in Captain William Lindsay's Co from Dec 8,
1781 to Feb 8, 1782.
1782 Frederick Rule was taxed 5 pounds 3 shillings 1 pence for 96 acres, 2
horse, and 3 cattle in Shrewsbury Twp, York Co, PA.
1783 Frederick Ruhl was taxed for 96 acres and 6 inhabitants in Shrewsbury
Twp.
1785-86 Frederick purchased 140 acres on 15 November from John and Mary Mahon
to add to Pleasant Ridge.
1798 Frederick's father-in-law (of second wife) Henry Kann died. Henry's will
abstract reported: Henry Kaun. Jun 4, 1796. Executors: George and Adam Berd.
Hellam Township. Children: Michael, John, Philip, Henry, Daniel, John, Susanna
wife of Michael Dersteen, Catharine wife of Frederick Ruhl, Barbara wife of
--- Heyer, and now married to Jacob Stohly, Mary wife of Philip Decker, and
Magdalena wife of John Kauffman. Grandchildren: John and Barbara Heyer, and
four children of Catharine Ruhl whose names were not given.
1800 census Frederick Rule and female, both age 45+, lived in Shrewsbury Twp,
York Co, PA. Son Henry was listed on the next page.
1802 On 16 July, Frederick and Catherina deeded Pleasant Ridge to their son
Heinrich.
c 1810 Catherina died.
1810 A will was listed for Frederick Ruhl in York County dated the 25th of
May. The will is transcribed below. Source: Extracted from a hand-written
copy of the original will (York County Archives).
"In the name of God Amen. I Frederick Ruhl of Shrewsbury Township in the
County of York and State of Pennsylvania, Yeoman, being in Health of Body and
of a Sound Mind, Memory, and Understanding, blessed be God, Do this Twenty
fifth day of May in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and ten
Make and publish this my Last Will and Testament as follows. First and
principally, I commit my Soul into the hands of God, and my body I request to
be buried in a Christian manner by my executors as hereafter named and as
touching my worldly Estate, I dispose of the same as follows.
My funeral Expenses and lawful Debts, I order to be first paid and Satisfied.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Catharine, her Bed, Bedstead
and Bed Clothes, and the Interest of One Hundred Pounds annually during her
Widowhood, for which purpose I order my Executors to put out on Interest, one
hundred pounds of my Estate, the first payment to be made her in one Year
after my decease. The remainder of my Estate I order to be Sold at the Public
Vendue as soon as convenient after my decease, and one third thereof (after
payment of Funeral Expenses & Just Debts) I give and bequeath unto my said
wife Catharine and the vendu with that one Hundred Pounds (which I ordered to
be put on Interest) after my said Wifes death or intermarriage.
I order to be divided into Five Equal Shares. One Share thereof I give and
bequeath unto my Son Henry Ruhl or his lawful issue in case of his death
before me. One other share thereof unto my Son John Ruhl, or his lawful issue
as aforesaid. One other share thereof unto my Daughter Elizabeth intermarried
with John Greenenwalt, or to her lawful issue as aforesaid. One other fifth
share thereof unto my Daughter Julianna intermarried with Michael Eurich, or
to her lawful Issue, in case she should die before me as aforesaid. And the
other fifth share I order to be put out on Interest by my executors, and in
case my Daughter Margaret, intermarried with John Reber, should become in
need. I order my executors or Survivor, to pay her the interest thereof, but
this to be discretionary, with my executors, and in case of her becoming a
Widow, when and in that case I order my Executors or Survivors of them to pay
unto her the whole Principal and Interest thereof, but if she should die in
her present Married State, then it is my Will and I order my Executors to pay
the same unto the lawful Issue of my said Daughter Margaret to be Equally
divided between them. And lastly I do Nominate and appoint my Son Henry Ruhl
and my Son in law Michael Eurich to be Executors of this my Last Will and
Testament. Hereby Revoking all others heretofore made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto made my hand and Seal on the Day & Year
afore. Frederick Ruhl (signature) and seal. Signed, sealed, published,
pronounced and declared by the said Frederick Ruhl as and for his Last Will
and Testament In the presenc of us, who have hereto Subscribed our Names as
Witnesses. In presenc of the said Testator and at his request and in the
presence of each other at the same time.
Lewis Shive, H Barnitz, Jacob Barnitz Jr. York County, Jr?, Bedford and Jacob
Barnitz Registers for the Probate of Wills and granting letters of
administration in and for the County of York in the State of Pennsylvania.
Personally came Lewis Shive and Jacob Barnitz Junr, two of the subscribing
Witnesses to the foregoing Instrument of writing and on their solemn Oaths do
severally say that they were Personally Present and saw and heard the above
named Frederick Ruhl sign his name unto and seal and Publish the foregoing
Instrument of writing as and for his Last Will and Testament and that at the
time of the doing thereof he the said Frederick Ruhl was of a sound and
disposing mind, memory and understanding to the best of their knowledge and
belief and that they subscribed their names thereto as Witnesses in the
presence of the said Testator at his request and that they also saw Jacob
Barnitz the other witness sign his name thereto as a witness at the same time.

And at York the 17th day of Jacob Barnitz
October AD 1815"
1815 Frederick Ruhl died in Shrewsbury Township. Prove Date 17 Oct 1815.
Executors: (son) John Henry Ruhl and (daughter) Margaret and Michael Eyrick
(son-in-law). Shrewsbury Township. Wife: Catharine Ruhl. Children: Henry,
John, Elizabeth wife of John Greenwalt, Juliana wife of Michael Eurich,
Margaret wife of John Reber, and Michael.
1816 Frederick's estate showed a balance of $785.88.
c 1820 Catherina died.
1825 On 13 September, the administration was amended by Michael Eurich (sic
son-in-law Michael Eyrich) and Henry Ruhl. The interest on 100 pounds was
retained and paid up to the decease of the widow ($141.00) and the interest
since the death of the widow ($29.43) yielding a total account of $997.31.
The date of death of the widow was not reported.
