Notes from Janet and Robert Wolfe Genealogy Gateway, 2009/09/20
The names of the children in this family are from a biosketch of possible
grandson William (died 1869) in The Biographical Annals of Cumberland, page
358-59, which named John Jacob Wise as William's father and reported that he
was born 1767 (shown here as 1770) in Lancaster Co, PA, attended school there,
and moved to Cumberland Co with his father (this Jacob, born 1744) when he was
a "large boy" and listed the siblings of John Jacob Wise as George, Frederick,
Leonard, Michael, Mary, and Susanna.
The link of this Jacob (born 1744) to the father and children shown here, is
based on the will of (possible father) Jacob Wise, dated 5 May 1795 with
probate 28 April 1798 which named seven children: Martin, Henry, Jacob, John,
Sophia Margaret wife of Mark Brindle, Anna Maria wife of John Wormley, and
George Wise and grandsons John and Frederick, sons of son Jacob Wise with
executors Son Jacob Wise and nephew Jacob Wise, of Allen. Wit.: Michael
Ridner (Michael Ritner, born c 1755?), Wm. Scott., Jean Carothers. F. 100-101.
The grandsons named in that will are assumed here to be the sons, John Jacob
(born 1770) and Frederick, of this Jacob (born 1744), the other grandsons
perhaps not being of age when the will was written.
However, an alternative lineage might be given by a Jacob born to Frederick
and Cathrina Wise on 20 April 1767, baptized 1 July "On Susqhehanna". (page
80, Cumberland Co Church Records of the 18th Century by F Edward Wright).
This could be linked to Frederick Wise married to Eva Elizabeth Wunderlich
(Wonderly), whose father was also reported as Frederick.
1770 Married: Johann Jacob Weiss, son of Jacob Weiss, and Anna Maria, daughter
of Friedrich Haffner on July 8, 1770; at 6 o'clock at Jacob Weiss' House.
(Baptismal and Marriage Records, Rev John Waldschmidt, Cocalico, Moden Krick,
Weisseichen Land And Seltenreich). Other than occuring at about the right
time, with the right names, there is no other evidence that this is that
marriage for this Jacob Wiess. Note: Son John Jacob was born 1667 or 1770,
before the marriage date shown here, so this might not be the same parents as
this couple.
1790 Jacob Wise lived in Cumberland, PA in a household with three males age
16+ (himself, Jacob, and Frederick), five males age 0-16 (Leonard, George,
Michael, and two others), five females.
1799 Carlisle, May 29. Died---Last week after a long and painful sickness,
Mrs. Weiss, wife of Mr. Jacob Weiss, of Middleton township. [Kline's
Carlisle Weekly Gazette; Date: 05-29-1799; Volume: XIV; Issue: 719; Page: 3]
1800 Jacob Wise, listed as age 45+, lived in Middleton, Cumberland Co, PA in a
household with four males age 16-25, possibly sons Leonard, George, Michael,
and Frederick with females one age 0-10, one age 10-15, three age 16-25, and
one age 25-45. Jacob Wise Jr and John Wise Jr, each age 26-44 are adjacent
listings and John Wise, age 45+, is on the same census page.
1809 "Take Notice. That I have applied to the honorable the judges of the
Court of Common Pleas of Cumberland County, for the benefit of the insolvent
laws of this State, who have appointed the 14th day of February next to hear
me and my creditors at the Court House in the borough in Carlisle, when and
where they may attend if they see fit. Jacob Wise. January 2 1809".
(Kline's Carlisle Weekly Gazette; 01-20-1809; Volume XXIV; Issue 1263; Page
4).
1810 John Wise, listed as age 26-44, lived in Middleton, Cumberland Co, PA in
a household with three males age 16-25, possibly sons Leonard, George, and
Michael with females three age 0-10, one age 16-25, and one age 45+ (wife Anna
Maria). This could be the house of John Jacob, with him listed in the wrong
column, since John Jacob Sr should be age 65. Jacob Jr, John Jr, and
Frederick were also listed in Middleton, each age 26-44.
1812 Kline's Weekly Carlisle Gazette; Date: 12-25-1812; Volume: XXVIII; Issue:

execution as the property of Jacob Weise, at the suit of William Moore for the
use of the executors of John Holmes deceased, against John Peters, Jacob
Weise, sen and John Weise." (Carlisle Gazette, 01-01-1813; Volume XXVIII;
Issue 1458; Page 4).
1820 Leonard age 26-46 with male age 45+ (Jacob Sr), George age 26-46, and
John with 4 males age 16-26 lived in South Middleton, Cumberland Co.

Maria Catherine.
