Tracking the Page Family

The original information available to me about Elizabeth R. Page, spouse of Charles T. Pickett, was reported by my Aunt Gladys (Wolfe) Teegarden and included only her name, Elizabeth May Page, and her brother's name John. By searching through census records and looking for other entries in nearby households with the name Page, the names of M.C. Page and Asahel Page in Darke County Ohio were identified. I then happened upon a land transfer between C.F. Pickett and M.C. Page that had been transcribed from original handwritten records by Dorothy Wiland and which she had posted on the internet. Upon my query, the name was deemed to be C.T. Pickett, undoubtedly our ancestor Charles. With this link, searching for other documentation became more focused and it soon became clear that M.C. Page was the father of Charles' spouse, Elizabeth. It turns out that Uncle Asahel also made his presence felt in Elizabeth's life.

This led in turn to my second success. The spouse of Michael Coates Page was known only by her first name, Sarah, through census records. However, one census entry for M.C. and Sarah included Benjamin Schooley living with them. The same Benjamin Schooley appeared in the entry for his parents in the same census year, an apparent double counting of Benjamin. Subsequent searches for Sarah Schooley showed that Sarah had indeed married a Page and had been disowned from the Quaker Church for having done so. The Quakers keep very good records. Further searches verified that Benjamin was indeed the brother of Sarah and her lineage was established.

Quaker Roots

Many of Elizabeth Page's ancestors were Quakers. Many generations of them lived in New Jersey and in Bucks County PA. Banish thoughts of meek people when you think of Quakers. The Quakers withstood tremendous hardship from persecution in Europe as they maintained their faith. Eventually, they found refuge in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Later, many, including Elizabeth Page's parents, moved on to Ohio when it was still frontier territory.

The Page-Coate-Doughty-Barker-Stokes-Hartman-Hutchinson Families

Michael Coate (MC) Page's parents were John Page and Rachel Hartman. They have ancestries that likely extend back to land-owning families in England, Germany, and Holland.

Several of the English ancestors were Quakers. There was substantial turmoil associated with being a Quaker in England during certain periods when Quakers were persecuted. Many of these Quakers moved to New Jersey and Michael's ancestors include many of their descendants. Michael's father moved from New Jersey to Ohio. It appears that Michael may not have remained in good standing with the Quakers, because his wife Sarah Schooley was disowned by the Quakers when she married him.

The Coate and Page names are both from Michael's paternal side. The Page line; along with Williams, Scott, and Wright lines; stops in New Jersey in the 1600's. The Coate name is from Michael's grandmother Sarah Coate. Her Coate ancestors are known back to England in the 1500's. Her father's mother was Esther Doughty, whose paternal line is also known back to England in the 1500's. Elias Doughty, an ancestor of Daniel Coate, is a common ancestor of both Robert Wolfe and Janet Chevalley, 11 generations hence. The Doughty lineage also includes a Barker line that continues speculatively to the 1400's. Sarah Coate's maternal side includes ancestors with the Stokes name, who are known back to the 1600's in England.

Michael Page's mother was Rachel Hartman. Her father was Christopher Hartman, from Germany, and his German ancestry is known back to the 1600's. Rachel Hartman's mother, Mary Hutchinson, has several generations of ancestors in New Jersey.
