1959 Ranald Wolfe was named among researchers at New York for a study of Functional Deafness. [66]

The world literature has reported a high incidence of functional deafness; that is, hearing loss for which no specific organic explanation can be found. This condition exists in approximately 20 percent of the veterans receiving compensation for hearing disability. The problem is also common in the military personnel, and occurs in the civilian population, including children. In October 1958, a research study unit was organized at the VA regional office, New York. It will be the pilot unit of a contemplated four-clinic cooperative study of hearing loss. The joint efforts of participants from the fields of psychiatry, psychology, neurology, audiology, and otology are recognized as necessary for a successful comprehensive study. Through intensive examination by specialists in the framework of a careful research design, information should accrue to permit the differentiation of organic from functional deafness, the measurement of the amount of each of these components, identification of the variety of types of nonorganic deafness, and the proper management of patients whose hearing impairment is functional, either entirely or in part.

1961 Ranald Wolfe was named among researchers at New York for a completed study of Functional Deafness. [67]

Functional (Nonorganic) Deafness. A high incidence of nonorganic deafness has been observed in military and veteran populations since refined audiological testing was developed during World War II. To obtain a better understanding of the nature of this condition, which affects an estimated 15,000 veterans, a pilot study of the problem was undertaken in October 1958 at the VA regional office, New York. The focal study involved 48 hard-of-hearing patients, 22 of whom demonstrated nonorganic hearing impairment. In addition to a conventional medical examination, these veterans were intensively evaluated on an interdisciplinary basis. The goal was to analyze the components of the disorder as revealed by audiological neurological, psychiatric, and psychological investigations. Additional approaches included the evaluation of 34 veterans as to generalized sensory-perceptual disturbances, while orientation to auditory testing and the role of attention disorders was studied in 90 others. The overall study was concluded on June 30, 1961, and a report for publication is being readied. Included is a description of the pattern of audiological inconsistencies manifested in nonorganic deafness. Other highlights of the study are indications of increased rates of severe emotional disturbances, higher incidence of sensory abnormalities, and a reflection of sensory-perceptual dysfunctioning as factors in nonorganic hearing impairment.
