Notes for Humphrey Howland

1613 Humphrey Howland was apprenticed to James Smith of the Drapers' Company of London on November 19. [1]

1620 Humphrey Howland was made free in the Drapers' Company of London on December 1. [2]

1622 Simon Howland, son of Henry Howland of Fenny Stanton, was apprenticed to Humphrey Howland of the Drapers' Company of London and made free on 24 March 1629. [3]

1622 "November 21 Humphrey Howland and Margaret Calvert" were married at St Mary White Chapel, Middlesex, England. [4]

1623 Henry Howland, son of Henry Howland of Fenny Stanton, was apprenticed to Humphrey Howland of the Drapers' Company of London on 1 October 1623. [5]

1626 "Susan the daughter of Humfrey Howland & Margaret his wife Buryed 4th October 1626 in the church yard had the 2 bell" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [6]

1629/30 "Margarett daughter to Humfrey Howland & Margaret his wife was baptised the 17 th of March 1629" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [7]

1634 "Nathaniel sonne to Humfrey Howland and Margarett his wife was baptised 9th of Aprill 1634" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [8]

1636 "Humfrey Howland of this parish & Ann ____ (blank) of ____ (blank) maryed by Mr Moloyiss wt licence maried _th of octo' 1636" [9]

1637 "Margaret Daughter of Humfry Howland & Mary [sic] his wife was Baptised the 25th of Desember 1637" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [10]

1637 "Mary (written above Margaret, which is crossed out, but this must be the child baptized two days earlier) daughter of Humfry Howl[and] & Mary his wife Buried the 27 of Desember in the Churchyard had ____ bell" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [11]

1637 "Thomas Nite(?) servant to Humfrey Howland buried of the plague the 21th May 1637 in the Churchyard 2 bell" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [12]

1638 "Mary Daughter of Humphrey Howland & Mary his wife Baptysed the 23 of December 1638" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [13]

1640/41 "Nathaniell sonne of Mr Humfrey Howland in Bush Lane was Buried in the Cloyster the 18th of January 1640" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [14]

1640/41 March 21 "Sara daughter of Humfrey Howland and ____ (blank) his wife" was baptized at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [15]

1646 Will of Humfrey Howland, Citizen and Draper of Saint Swithin, City of London, written 28 May 1646, proved 10 July 1646 by his second wife, Anne. [16] [17]

Most of Humphrey's will describes property he was in the process of buying or had bought and the distribution of that property to his three daughters Anne, Mary/Marie, and Sarah and their heirs etc and to his wife Anne for the term of her life.

The land to be purchased was on Thames Street in London and in the parish of Barking in the county of Essex and he discusses what to do if the sales did not go through. He had already purchased some land for Mary, "Whereas I have I have made my daughter Mary Joynt purchaser w'th me in a copyhold tenement in the Mannor of Stepney in the countie of Midd' my will is that shee shall enioy the same accordinglie.".

"Item I give and appoynt unto my said daughter Anne all the pewter marked w'th A.H. w'ch was her grandmothers, And the truncke and all the Lynnin therein standing in Mr Harberts chamber in my dwelling house. And two featherbeds and the cypress chest, and great wainscott chest standing in the hall of my said dwelling house." (No comparable items are mentioned for the other two daughters.)

"Item I give unto my brother Arthur Howland eight pounds out of the debt owing to me by Mr. Ruck of New England. And to my brother John Howland four pounds out of the same debt. And to my brother Henry Howland four pounds out of the said debt. But in case the said debt shalbe received in my lifetime then said three legacies payable out of the same to be void. Item I give unto my sister Margaret Pillipps five pounds. And I give unto my nephew Simon Howland five pounds to be paid unto him at his age of one and twenty yeares. And I give unto his sister my niece Hanna Howland five pounds to be paid unto her at her age of one and twenty yeares or day of marriage first happening."

Humphrey named his wife Anne as executrix and guardian of his daughters. "And I make and appoynte my said wife Anne to be guardian to my said three children untill their respective age of one and twenty yeares or day of marryiage, and w'th the provenances of their respective estates to educate and maintain them respectivelie."

1646/47 Humphrey and Margaret Howland's daughter Anne married Thomas Hanson at St Nicholas, Deptford, Kent, recorded in the parish register of marriages as "Tho Hanson & Anne Howland feb first." [18]

1648/49 Humphrey Howland's widow Anne and her daughters Mary and Sarah are mentioned in the will of William Harbert "of the parish of Swithings in Bush Lane," City of London, dated 19 Feb 1648[/9] and proved 9 March 1648[/9]. William bequeathed his linen and most of his wearing apparel to his land lady Mrs. Anne Howland and gave Mary and Sarah Howland each five pounds. He bequeathed his lands and estate beyond the seas unto his kindred to be divided amongst them according to the laws of that country. He gave to his goddaughter Mary Winderbanck daughter of Michaell Winderbanck ten pounds and to Mr John Danborge(?) one hundred pounds which was in the hands of Mrs Mandie widowe provided that out of that hundred pounds "he paies these legacies." He also bequeathed to this legatee "one blackcloake and brooches" excepted in the bequest to his land lady Mrs Howland. Residue to his loving friend John Eaton also named as executor. (Humphrey Howland's daughter Anne was not mentioned in the will.) [19]

1648/49 "Harbart a duchman out of Mrs Howland's house buried in the quier under the stone next to Mr Bowes pewe ye south side of it ground full the 12 March 1648" at St Swithin London Stone, London, England. [20]

1653 In her will, written 10 December 1653 and proved 22 November 1654, Anne Howland, widow, of Barking, co. Essex, left various lands to her daughters Mary and Sarah. To her executor William Curtoyse, the rents and profits of tenements in Gunpowder lane and a lease in Barnaby street, Southwark. To her daughter Hanson, 10s. to buy a ring. [21]
